tigeroil··on I forked SteamOS for my living room PC
Similar specs but run Windows here, part of the reason being that I noticed that the ray tracing performance is just awful on Linux compared to Windows. I found I get slightly better framerates in most games in Linux, but anything that uses raytracing goes from "just about usable with FSR" on Windows to "totally unplayable" on Linux.

I'm told it's better in Mesa 23.3 though, haven't tested.

tigeroil··on I forked SteamOS for my living room PC
did you try playing mirrors edge through steam? I ask because steam input really does work wonders
tigeroil··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT4 broken since last weekend?
It works but performance has definitely taken a hit over the last few days.
tigeroil··on Some iPhone 15 Pro Max users are reporting OLED screen 'burn in'
Indeed - it amazes me that people talk about Apple like they have excellent customer service.

I've honestly had much better customer service experiences with just about any other OEM.

tigeroil··on $8B Sam Bankman-Fried criminal trial starts today
In what sense doesn't it work though? Because from a re-offending rate it unequivocally does work.

In terms of preventing new crimes from being committed, I think the honest answer is "it depends". I think early intervention and preventing crime in the first place is always going to beat punishing people for crimes after the fact.

tigeroil··on In Digital Ocean, S3-like space keys can access all your buckets
Indeed - I used to use Spaces for a project but found not just the uptime but teh overall reliability and performance was, at the time at least, markedly worse than AWS.
tigeroil··on In Digital Ocean, S3-like space keys can access all your buckets
You've described exactly why my company moved from DigitalOcean to AWS a while ago.

Whilst AWS is more expensive and perhaps over-engineered for our use-case, it was absolutely essential to have some kind of ACLs.

I mean, I can't exactly give my junior dev access to DO if it means he can also delete the entire production database and all backups with a misclick.

tigeroil··on The Airbnb Bubble Popping Will Pop the Housing Bubble
At first I was concerned about abuse of WFH by employees too, but then I realised, people in the office often aren't particularly productive either.

From my own team, if I had to guess, the actual number of productive hours are similar.

Granted, I think it probably varies dramatically by company / team, and I get the impression that some places take WFH much less seriously than we do (as in, not goofing off).

tigeroil··on Microsoft is bringing Python to Excel
Looking at what they're doing with Outlook I'd bet money that they intend to replace the desktop version of Excel with the web version sooner or later.
tigeroil··on China’s property giant Evergrande files for bankruptcy protection in Manhattan
Anecdotal but I will say the shift to WFH isn't really a thing in China from what I've seen.
tigeroil··on Millions of UK voters’ data accessible in cyber-attack
Which is rather amusing, as my partner, a Chinese national, is regularly hounded to register, despite not being eligible to do so (and in fact, would be committing an offense if she tried).
tigeroil··on I Paid Off $194k in Student Loans in Six Years. It Wasn’t Easy
I feel like this is a massively underappreciated view in general.

I always see people talking about how brilliant it is to run your own business / be your own boss, but I think there's immense value in just finishing and going home at the end of the day.

I say this as a director of a SaaS company...

tigeroil··on Reddit CEO doubles down on attack on Apollo developer in drama-filled AMA
I don't know why but I really, really hoped he'd come into the AMA with good intentions, or maybe even to announce that actually, you know what, they've reconsidered and now they're going to walk back some of the changes to the API pricing so as not to affect average users.

If only.

tigeroil··on AMD’s RX 7600: Small RDNA 3 Appears
What do you consider to be affordable? In the UK used RTX 3090s still go for well over 1k.
tigeroil··on Rarbg Is No More
Does the UK send letters and fines? I haven't torrented without a VPN for years but the worst I ever heard anyone getting was a letter from the ISP saying "that was very naughty, please don't do it again".
tigeroil··on KLOR – A 36-42 keys column-staggered split keyboard
Absolutely this - I use a Corne and it's my favourite keyboard for productivity by miles.

I do have another keyboard - a 61 key that I use for gaming, but for day-to-day productivity the corne is absolutely glorious.

tigeroil··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
My guess, based on the fact that Logic Pro and FCP, in the nicest way I can say this, haven't had any meaningful core upgrades in a while, is that they're planning some fairly major updates on macOS for both and the plan is to release them as new, subscription-only versions later this year.
tigeroil··on Ed Sheeran demonstrates how copyright is destroying musicians
Keep in mind that whilst you don't need to ask permission, you do need to obtain a mechanical license and I have a sneaking suspicion that many of the artists covering (particularly on YouTube) haven't done this.

Keep in mind that a mechanical license wouldn't cover you on YouTube anyway - once you're making a video for your cover you now need a sync license which you do need permission for.

tigeroil··on Kids trying to play video games on school laptops
I think part of it comes down to knowing your children well enough to know if this is likely.

In truth as someone with autism and ADHD I found myself down some pretty nasty rabbit holes if I wasn't at least given some guidance.

tigeroil··on Kids trying to play video games on school laptops
Wholeheartedly agreed. Even if the student has the absolute best of intentions, you have no way of knowing that the laptop doesn't have say, malware on it.
tigeroil··on AMD’s HD 6950 vs. RX 6900 XT: What Does Adding 50 Do?
I've noticed this to some extent with their CPUs as well.

From what I can tell this is, in part, because AMD run their chips much closer to their physical limits than say, Intel or Nvidia do. They're all redlining so to speak.

As such this means that any differences in the silicon are much more likely to have an impact on performance.

tigeroil··on Cyclists now outnumber motorists in City of London
Indeed. Though to be fair, having a bike is so much cheaper than a car that even if it did get stolen it'd still be cheaper to replace it than run a car.
tigeroil··on Reddit Confirms It Was Hacked–Recommends Users Set Up 2FA
Funnily enough where I live those gated communities have actually ended up being specifically targeted, because funnily enough people assume that if you can afford to live there you probably have stuff worth taking.
tigeroil··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
To be fair I have a work-provided MacBook Pro (Intel to be fair) with 8GB of RAM and it's borderline unusable.

If I didn't have experience with higher-specced Macs in the past the experience would be enough to make me swear off ever using Macs again.

tigeroil··on MacBook owners have two months to claim up to $395 over butterfly keyboard woes
Even that sounds much better than the service I received in the UK.

Each time I had to take it to the physical Apple store (they didn't even offer me the option of a mail-in repair, and when I asked said it wasn't an option) and each time I'd spend a good hour or two talking to the "genius" before they would have it repaired, usually about a week later.

tigeroil··on Mazda has tested a synthetic fuel in an unmodified MX5 on a 1000-mile road trip
The main thing your comment highlights for me is how much of a push we need for more sustainable methods of transportation in general.

There's always going to be people who will need to drive, but there's a hell of a lot of people who could be perfectly adequately served by strong public transportation.

tigeroil··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
Thing is, there's other nationalities who quite frankly would probably be a lot more effective at coming off as convincing to potential victims, especially given the unfortunate effect this has had on the Indian people's reputation.

The fact that we haven't really seen anything near the level of Indian call centres tells me that this is unlikely.

I'm not saying that scammers don't exist in other countries, but that it's very rare to see anything with the level of sophistication and organisation that we see in India.

tigeroil··on Nix on the Steam Deck
Indeed. I hate to say it because I love Linux but Wine has genuinely been by far the most stable ABI on Linux.
tigeroil··on Ask HN: Has anyone here turned around their life in their 40s?
The part about attention from women is very, very true.

Obviously relationships are hardly the only thing that matters in life, but it amazes me how much more attention I get from women since I got my life together. Turns out a man who's figured things out and is doing reasonably well is very attractive.

tigeroil··on Ask HN: Anyone else suffering from tinnitus?
I know it's ridiculous but I genuinely didn't realise I had tinnitus for so long, precisely because I've had it all my life and so just assumed that tinnitus must be something different. I genuinely can't imagine not having it.
