tietjens··on ASML staffing changes could result in a net reduction of around 1700 positions
Can you name these two manufacturers?
tietjens··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
I think to give yourself more context you should ask about the patterns that led to SWEs having such high pay in the last 10-15 years and why it is you expected it to stay that way.

I personally think the barrier is going to get higher, not lower. And we will be back expected to do more.

tietjens··on Deutsche Telekom is throttling the internet
This is the best text explainer I have found: https://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/blog/2025/05/no-two-tier-inter...
tietjens··on What Will You Do When AI runs Out of Money and Disappear?
Hey you’re right! That’s cool.
tietjens··on EU–INC – A new pan-European legal entity
Yes somehow they believed the 90s continue despite zero public investment. They talk about the dangers of debt for future generations, but they are silent about the infrastructure debt they are saddling their children with by not investing on any serious scale.
tietjens··on EU–INC – A new pan-European legal entity
Have you started a company that took investment from funds located in other countries within the EU? That is the main focus of this idea. Lowering the barrier to investing in startups across EU nation states.

Austrian company and you want to take investment from a venture fund in X country? It'll get complicated very fast. That's part of what this trying to fix and make simple.

tietjens··on EU–INC – A new pan-European legal entity
90s is charitable. Most important thing here is that nothing changes. Everything new is considered suspicious.
tietjens··on EU–INC – A new pan-European legal entity
> Massive German tax money is already today used for non-national interests.

Please elaborate. You're complaining that DE tax funds go to the EU? Very curious what you're talking about and your rational.

tietjens··on Ask HN: Is it still worth pursuing a software startup?
Rocket Internet is often engaged in arbitrage where they bring an existing company’s idea to a different country or context. This is very different from the flood-the-zone astroturfing discussed above. Zalando is its own company employing ~5k engineers. This isn’t a copycat I would claim.

But maybe you’re referring to practices I am not aware of.

tietjens··on Whistleblower drops 'largest ever' ICE leak to unmask agents
Does this mean we can find out how many Jan. 6 proud boys are employed by ICE?
tietjens··on CVEs affecting the Svelte ecosystem
Small sites such as IKEA and the New York Times are built with Svelte.
tietjens··on CLI agents make self-hosting on a home server easier and fun
This is very cool and I'm doing something similar but without the Claude interface as the contact point for manipulating the server. What happens if one day Claude is down, or it becomes too expensive, or it is purchased by another company, etc.

In this case you will be completely unable to navigate the infrastructure of your homeserver that your life will have become dependent on.

But a homeserver is always about your levels of risk, single points of failure. I'm personally willing to accept Tailscale but I'm not willing to give the manipulation of all services directly over to Claude.

tietjens··on Anthropic blocks third-party use of Claude Code subscriptions
yes, anomalyco now comprises of sst, opencode, etc.
tietjens··on I'm rejecting the next architecture PR that uses a Service Mesh for a team of 4
Question, does anyone have a suggestion for the best book about networking? I’ve been looking for a while.
tietjens··on Kidnapped by Deutsche Bahn
The thing that stands out to me about this story and that confuses me the most about German life is the general passive acceptance of realities like this. I think it might be simply European.
tietjens··on AI Bathroom Monitors? Welcome to America's New Surveillance High Schools
You can down vote me but bump stocks are legal. The difference seems semantic.

There are many, many steps that could be taken in the USA to reduce access to weapons before reaching outright banning. Obviously.

And also the idea that banning handguns would be draconian is hilarious. Try talking to anyone from UK, ANZ, Europe, etc. No one is crying about too much regulation.

tietjens··on AI Bathroom Monitors? Welcome to America's New Surveillance High Schools
Ah no, I’m pretty certain allowing the sale of military-grade automatic weapons is the issue. That’s a tool for warfare, and you have deadly shootings every day.
tietjens··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
I take your point, but I think the comment was referring to Web 2.0.
tietjens··on Canada's Carney called out for 'utilizing' British spelling
Can anyone give me an example how Canadian English spelling differs from American English?
tietjens··on The Rise of Computer Games, Part I: Adventure
If anything, now there is a discovery problem where the novel, incredible inventive games take longer to surface via word of mouth because there are so many. The quality and choice have never been higher. But that feeling that we’re all playing and enjoying the same things is gone.

Just started KCD2 last night by the way.

tietjens··on The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI Partner on Sora
It’s in too short supply. That level of humor, thoughtfulness, just human care put me into a show parents and kids can relate to.
tietjens··on IBM to acquire Confluent
How has it been? Sincere question.
tietjens··on Wayland Nvidia
When can I reliably run ~95% of Steam titles on Linux with a Nvidia card? That's what I'm waiting for, then it's bye-bye Windows.
tietjens··on Cloudflare Down Again – and DownDetector Is Also Down
For those hawks, Christmas has come early.
tietjens··on Cloudflare Down Again – and DownDetector Is Also Down
does this mean we can blame React Server Components for something new?
tietjens··on It’s time to free JavaScript (2024)
Don't most people just pronounce it Eck-ma?
tietjens··on Reverse engineering a $1B Legal AI tool exposed 100k+ confidential files
Great comment. Very true.
tietjens··on Writing a good Claude.md
I think this could work really well for infrastructure/ops style work where the LLM will not be able to grasp the full context of say the network from just a few files that you have open.

But as others are saying this is just basic documentation that should be done anyway.

tietjens··on Google denies 'misleading' reports of Gmail using your emails to train AI
The only reason I am still using gmail is due to choice paralysis. I do not know which email service to choose and pay for. I do not like Proton. Is Fastmail the way to go? There is also the German one posteo. Should I just use Apple's mail? I'm taking suggestions if you have anything to share.
tietjens··on Don't be a scary old guy: My 40s survival strategy with charm
It's his strategy going forward. He isn't saying he completed his 40s at the age of 41. You would prefer he share his strategy for 40s at 50? Seems pedantic.
