SBF is so so bad. But,

When does it become criminal to skip the step of establishing an accounting system....prior employees say they didn't even know their cash, liability, or trading positions.

FTX customer deposits went into Alameda bank account. Could be that they stayed there and somebody just kept a spreadsheet of deposits?

My point is that the astounding lack of records and systems may make it very difficult to prosecute him. For example, trades and payments were executed just on verbal orders so it will be hard to pin specifics on SBF.

Probably testimony of insiders will be the most compelling evidence against him.

My product recommendation was a tactical vest that was permanently out of stock on Amazon. Huh?

Primary theme was Defiant

tickerticker··on Show HN: I'm trying to guess your personality by your comments with an NLP model
Product suggestion was........a tactical vest [?] that was permanently out of stock on Amazon ???

How does this pair with a primary theme of defiance....

TIL forms of non-admissable legal evidence [polygraph, barking dogs] which are nevertheless considered useful to a judge. This tool sounds similar.....not useless, not definitive.

tickerticker··on Launch HN: Iollo (YC S22) – At-home metabolomics test to extend healthy lifespan
Congratulations on launch!

You are using established lab gear and existing research on metabolites, which helps establish credibility. So you have first mover advantage in that you have learned HIPPA compliance and will be first for FDA approval.

If this product was a huge success, is the thing that would make it difficult for copycats your ML-based data analysis software?

Lots of ppl have sensitive data, but, what could you say to customers that would give them cybersecurity comfort?

tickerticker··on Ask HN: First-time dad-to-be. What do you wish you'd known back then?
Get a trusted, non-bossy friend who has a baby already. Use that person as a sounding board for questions or concerns.

The "relax" idea is easy to say, harder to do. Very important. Baby can pick up your vibe.

Longer term: The #1 best thing to give your child is to have a strong relationship with your partner. IMO, this takes a lot of work, especially if you were raised in a home without that. As much as education, safety, and health, this is the highest gift from parent to child...the capacity to have healthy relationships.

Second only to that is to earn respect from the child. Enforce boundaries and consequences ...lovingly. Learn how to fashion consequences to fit the crime.

Lastly, if you let your child learn how to divide and conquer parents, you are asking for mountains of conflict.

Why don't all the USA billionaires sponsor a contest to search out the best template for public education? The Broad Institute tried. Let's try again. It's a matter of life and death.

There are so many ideas that could create great progress if they could find a sponsor.

Happy birthday!

When I was 17, I: (a) was immortal (b) knew everything (c) had boundless energy (d) was out to change the world (e) did not know myself.

Fifty years later, I am • finite • humble • energetic in spurts • want to teach and encourage • still learning about myself.

Y Combinator, my best BD wish is that all your mistakes will be instructive. <3

And a roar goes up from the crowd..... can't remember when I have felt such delight about a government announcement.

Trying to close accounts for my just-deceased brother took HOURS over several days. The retention person at Verizon even said there could be many reasons not to cancel a dead person's account.

tickerticker··on Launch HN: Mighty Health (YC S19) – Health coaching for people over 50
The need for your app is overwhelming. I am 65, female, very fit, and lost 40 pounds since 2014. Daily, I do some type of class, either strength, cardio, yoga, or walking. Here are my concerns with your app as a vehicle to long-term improvement.

1. The enemy of healthy living is social interaction that is nearly always alcohol and food indulgence. Either your user has to find new friends (like an alcoholic develops a cohort of non-drinking friends,) or they have to acquire the strength of purpose to abstain while still being social. Success here is very dependent on self-esteem....a distinctly non-technical aspect not directly addressed by the app.

2. Preparing your next meal BEFORE YOU ARE HUNGRY is critical to success. This could be addressed by subscribing to a pre-packaged frozen meal service, or, by consistently doing grocery shopping and meal prep in advance. The latter takes planning, discipline, and effort. Lack of planning is frequently the reason for eating excess or unhealthy food.

3. Eating to self-soothe is prevalent. Learning other sources of pleasure or gratification is crucial to sustained success. For example, I always want second helpings even though I know I have already had enough. This because my stomach needs an extra 15 minutes to tell my brain that I am satisfied. To cope, I set a 15 minute timer and for that 15 minutes, I walk away from the food area, sit in a comfy chair and do something pleasant with my phone, such as read fashion news or text with a friend. A sine qua non of healthy eating is having a list of other pleasant things to do when you feel the urge to eat when not hungry.

4. Many overweight people will only succeed in the transition to a healthy life if they have in person contact with others that support and acknowledge their struggle. Either a 12-step meeting or a FaceTime call with their coach is vital so that your user can visualize that person's face when the user is at the moment of decision to binge or not.

5. If you take away food and drink as the emotional coping tool, you have to replace it with something that is not self-destructive. Your users have to be ready when emotional crisis comes when, then more than ever, they will feel entitled to eat or drink anything within convenient reach. For this reason, I am unable to keep ready-to-eat foods in my house.....cereal, cheese, nut butters, dessert, snacks, bread of any kind. I do keep fresh apples and oranges, but that is it. Your user must develop other methods of dealing with crisis.....journaling, phone a friend, or just giving themselves permission to withdraw, lay down and rest if possible. Since I have momentum on my side, an activity that 100% occupies the mind, like a spin class, is my helper that enables me to muddle through. Meditation is another good tool.

I have come to believe that lack of self-care has much more to do with emotional self-regulation and self esteem than it does with lack of knowledge on sleep, exercise, and nutrition.

However, for those who suddenly get motivated by a health scare, the knowledge and guidance in your app is like a welcome breath of life.

tickerticker··on Ask HN: Ways to generate income when you're at home without pay?
Go to suburban neighborhood. Offer to clean the garbage roll out barrels.

Tether yourself and go up on customer's roof and blow off the leaves and debris.

Weed the flower beds. Wash windows. Detail cars. Play with kids outdoors. Clean and polish the brass fixture exterior lights.

Use customer mower to cut the lawn.

My friend does Concierge errand services and he makes $50 a day.

tickerticker··on Ask HN: Great fiction books that have had a positive impact on your life?
Brothers Karamotzov by Dostoevsky. Helped me see the relationship between suffering and happiness, between pain and pleasure. Made me realize that government is an exercise in making the best of a bad thing, given that so few people can handle power. Taught me ways that government can goad or torture people into submission. Confirmed my opinion that pseudointellectuals can fool quite a sizable audience. If this author spent so many years in the salt mines, I wonder how much of Russia's brain trust was decimated.
tickerticker··on WTF? I cannot cancel my NYTimes subscription online?
In cancelling my deceased brother's AT&T landline, I had to call the "customer retention" line. Twice, 30+ minute wait in the queue. When I got through, the CSR had MANY suggestions about why the line was still necessary. I had to decline each one rather than have a fit saying CLOSE THE ACCOUNT. Abuse of power.
tickerticker··on Ask HN: How is your mental health?
Although I am still on A/D meds, I am the best I have been in years because I escaped an emotionally abusive relationship a year ago. Since then, I have reclaimed stability and self-esteem by hitting the gym daily. The freedom to live without that influence is still amazing to me.
tickerticker··on Depression, anxiety rising among U.S. college students
Although I am not a college student, something that causes worry for me is the difficulty of knowing what is going on and what to believe, even though I consume news from many sources. The battle for readers/viewers' attention has escalated to manipulative tactics like clickbait or pandering. The slow demise of old media has created a sense of desperation in their reportage. New media RARELY seeks a footing of disinterested journalism. This adds a struggle to the experience of "adulting" for college kids.

Another issue is the change in the number of people living here. 1990 had 250MM. 2018 had 327MM. That 30% increase is bound to add stress and conflict.

Another: the pace of change has been overwhelming in the last 25 years. That might create self-doubt about one's capacity to keep skills updated.

Another: the decrease in life expectancy of white middle class people due to overdose and suicide. The plague of suicide is the message of futility and nihilism for survivors to absorb.

Prosperity cures a multitude of ills. Widespread under-employment brings every bruise, boil, laceration, and trauma to the forefront. College students see the employment landscape. They face competition from citizens and non-citizens, and thus a pie that gets divided among a bigger denominator.

The economic reality is that college is necessary for skilled occupations. Parents steer their kids into college, even though some of those kids don't have the self-management skills to succeed in college. If they do have these skills, they commonly are allowed to take coursework that is bound to result in a minimum wage job. This mortgages the first 20 working years of their adult lives with student loan debt service. I would certainly be discouraged by this prospect.

Lastly, the disconnect in authentic relationships that social media fostered took away a piece of the fundamental human safety net.

tickerticker··on Girls’ advantage in reading can largely explain the gender gap in STEM
My hunch about the reading skills gap is that little boys like physical movement marginally more than little girls, thus boys struggle to sit still and read.

tickerticker··on I'm bored, what do I do?
With kids, you have to allow boredom to happen so that they will create ways to entertain themselves......like making toys out of leftover boxes, etc. I should limit the crossword puzzles I do each day to practice what I preach.
tickerticker··on Card-Carrying Precadavers

tickerticker··on A Map of Native American Tribes
It is difficult to write history for any culture without a written language, but it can be approximated as the current "best guess" which can be improved over time. It is a great leap forward to begin this process, especially with autonyms. Future versions of this map might be color-coded to show tribal geography by century, as known from artifacts, oral histories, fossil remains, and general archeology. Rather than a monograph of anthropological scholarship, this strikes me more as a statement of cultural pride. It says to me that, even though history is written by the victors, there are other perspectives worth sharing.
