tibbon··on Mend it Mark gets suspect copyright strike for £25k audio amp repair
I took a few music-centered copyright classes in college and thought I had a decent understanding of copyright. How in the world does this qualify for copyright claim? Is it that taking a photo/video of the physical device is making a derivative work? That too doesn't seem to make sense.

Or is this just another bogus claim, like the one UMG made against the Esoterica channel recently against their own recording and arrangement of a Debussy piece that's 150 years old?

It seems to me that there needs to be some sort of escrow that large copyright claimants need to put into when making these claims. If they make bogus claims, that should go to the person they accused incorrectly of a copyright violation. This would balance things out a bit, as currently last companies can just go claim anything they like, bully others, and have nothing behind it.

tibbon··on 3 years ago, VCs in Bay Area tech were thriving. Now, they're 'bleeding cash.'
I see the word AI in your post, but didn't read the rest. Where can I invest?
tibbon··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
Might be making that hour-long call soon if NYT Management doesn't make some changes to support their union...
tibbon··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
ActBlue Technical Services (CWA 1400) unionized and ratified a contract this year.
tibbon··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
> Striking during election week is kind of a crappy move to pull

> there's not a clear button the Times can push on behalf of the union to end the strike immediately. The Times would either have to sign a blank check to the union now

But that's the thing, NYT Leadership can choose to offer agreeable terms and end this now. They simply elect not to. Management often likes to drag out negotiations and then play the victim.

tibbon··on Lead Drinking-Water Pipes Must Be Replaced Nationwide, EPA Says
Copper pipes + lead free (silver) solder is also an option.
tibbon··on I made a game you can play without anyone knowing (no visuals/sound)
I recall an Indie Game Jam many years ago where there were bonus points for no/limited visuals. You understood the assignment!
tibbon··on iPhone 16 Pro Storage Expansion 128GB to 1TB [video]
I wouldn't have thought to do it, but after seeing it, i think I could do this on a Bridgeport. I'm only so-so at machining, but I can make a Bridgeport grind with great precision in a rectangle!
tibbon··on iPhone 16 Pro Storage Expansion 128GB to 1TB [video]
I've wondered for a while if the 'non user upgradable' Macs were actually upgradable with enough effort. Seems so!
tibbon··on Amazon employees: 'I'd rather go back to school than work in an office again'
Amazon already sounded like the worst FAANG to work for due to the way they sculpt reviews to avoid options vesting, combined with lower salaries than the other FAANGs. But with this? Yup, 100%. I don't see why someone would consider Amazon unless they have no other options.
tibbon··on Show HN: iFixit created a new USB-C, repairable soldering system
I've been going through a 1-2lb of solder a year recently, and find myself needing multiple thicknesses and types. But, I've been repairing guitar amps, organs, building lots of microphone preamps, outboard rack gear, digital projects, etc. Kester solder rocks.

I do remember my first pound lasted about 15 years though...

tibbon··on 17,000 AT&T workers across the Southeast strike over contract negotiations
It's already happening. CWA has around 700k members, many of of them are technologists, programmers, etc. It isn't just low level or IT.

There are a lot of things that a union can do that would be nearly impossible for non-unionized employees to ask for.

tibbon··on 17,000 AT&T workers across the Southeast strike over contract negotiations
The move they'll make (I've seen this firsthand) is they'll exclude the most senior people (architects, distinguished engineers) from union eligibility. Leadership will do this by including them in meetings where they are privy to sensitive and confidential information and then will classify them as a 'confidential employee'.

This tactic is useful in ensuring that you always have a few people who can _probably_ keep the lights on, even if they are sub-optimally practiced at those systems.

tibbon··on I got almost all of my wishes granted with RP2350
Thanks for making the DEF CON badge! 10000x cooler than last year
tibbon··on The Marshmallow Test does not reliably predict adult functioning
It is interesting to read something like this and then go back to YouTube where there are 100s of videos pointing to this test as one of our most important ways to understand psychology and success. I suppose we all parrot things that have little basis in reality and we have not verified for ourselves
tibbon··on Musical Notation for Modular Synthesizers
I’m both fascinated by notation attempts for modular, and find them refreshingly useless.

I’ve been playing with modular synths for over 25 years. One of my favorite parts is the ephemeral nature of patching. A bump of a knob or the nature of unsynced elements can quickly make actual recall of a larger patch impossible. Due to heat or other variability I’ve had patches change on me over 45 minutes of no one touching them. In a world of digital recall and perfection; this really speaks to me. Immediacy can be relished. It is now or never

tibbon··on Show HN: I made a free app to calibrate your turntable by simply playing a song
Even pop albums aren't all 440hz. Def Leopard's Pyromania is about a 1/4 step off standard tuning, and there are many other examples of similar.

tibbon··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
Is someone's voice their IP? Is it more-valuable property because they are famous? What type of IP? Trademark? Without their name and image in combination, is a voice/likeness actually defensible?

Training a computer to have any actual-human sounding voice is likely to almost match someone's voice.

I haven't taken an IP class since 2004, but I'm not sure if there's a real case here is there?

tibbon··on Reverse engineering a car key fob signal
I've got a Flipper, LimeSDR (non-mini), some old-school ham equipment, a cheapo $10 RTL-SDR receiver, a few cheap HTs, some RFID tools, etc.

Each has their use. The Flipper is nice for quick and lightweight checking of things. LimeSDR is incredibly capable, but also a bit of a pain in the ass to use. Not something you'll flip out to quickly check something or run an experiment.

tibbon··on JSTOR is Now Available in 1k Prisons
I can't believe it's already been over 11 years since we lost him.
tibbon··on JSTOR is Now Available in 1k Prisons
People have definitely gone to prison for Jstor :(
tibbon··on Just 137 crypto miners use 2.3% of total U.S. power
Which is what Bitcoin uses, and it is one of the largest and most commonly used cryptocurrencies out there.
tibbon··on Car insurance in America is too cheap
Insurance rates were actually the deciding factor for me not buying a Tesla 3 a few years ago (before the carriers seemed to figure out coverage and risk for them a bit better). The insurance was going to be stupidly high, making the TCO with a decent loan (around 2% at the time) to be like $1k/month. I was like, I do not need to spent $1k/month on a car, so I bought a used Porsche for cash instead and pay almost nothing for insurance in comparison.
tibbon··on An alternative cause for the Great Stagnation: the cargo cult company
We had some lightweight terminal POS when I worked at a grocery store as a teen. We were tracked on average items/minute we scanned. I was fast with those and could ring through a cart of produce quickly.

The stupid self-checkout things... clunky, inaccurate, awful touchscreen calibrations, flag needlessly for "help" automatically. Whoever wrote those systems should feel bad for what they produced. I can't imagine that in the long term, they've helped the store save money or save anyone time.

As a young kid, I learned to use an AS/400 system and got fast at it quickly. I did a ton of data entry for my father's company. It felt so accurate and fast in comparison to the UI garbage today.

tibbon··on Infinite Craft
I don't get it; maybe it's broken in my browser. I can drag 4 types of items to a floating grid that connects them but then nothing happens.

EDIT: Ah, you drag items on top of each other for them to change. Instructions unclear, and I am dumb.

tibbon··on We migrated our PostgreSQL database with 11 seconds downtime
One issue we hit were any schema changes totally messed it up. I don't have my notes in front of me, but we were constantly hitting data that wouldn't migrate, or that things suddenly broke whenever things changed.
tibbon··on We migrated our PostgreSQL database with 11 seconds downtime
We also tried to use DMS for a few things (Rackspace to AWS migration, replication out to data lakes, etc) and it has been consistently undersupported, buggy and ate months of time before we went to other solutions. While a lot of AWS support has been good; not for DMS. It feels entirely half baked .
tibbon··on Live Map of Swiss Trains
Something seems inaccurate here, perhaps data corruption? There’s no way so many trains could be in such a small space.
