tiatia··on His Doctors Were Stumped, Then He Took Over
I totally agree on that.

I expect computers to outclass MDs very soon. Likely an Android will interview you and a MD will just have a look on the diagnosis (XX% chance for a XX% chance for b, make test A,B and C to rule B out).

This is up for debate. It is very well possible that you share very little with then. You should read: the breakdown of the bikameral mind and the creation of consciousness.

Please try to learn even the slightest thing about this subject before you make statements so confidently.

While there is a tiny bit of truth in your statement, Saudi Arabia changed a lot in 1979 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Mosque_seizure

Saudi King Khaled however, did not react to the upheaval by cracking down on religious puritans in general, but by giving the ulama and religious conservatives more power over the next decade. He is thought to have believed that "the solution to the religious upheaval was simple -- more religion." First, photographs of women in newspapers were banned, then women on television. Cinemas and music shops were shut down. School curriculum was changed to provide many more hours of religious studies, eliminating classes on subjects like non-Islamic history. Gender segregation was extended "to the humblest coffee shop". The religious police became more assertive.[

So it is up to debate, if Wahhabism really predates Islam extremism so far or at all. But regarding for Saudi Arabia I have little to no hope at all.

Again, to use your wording, Please try to learn even the slightest thing about this subject before you make statements so confidently.

No, actually you are right. You CANT convince me. Before I appreciate the legal opinion on some poster on ycombinator I prefer the opinion of a former German supreme court judge: https://www.welt.de/politik/deutschland/article150947586/Mer...

"In the specific moment you're alluding to she made the decision to suspend the Dublin rules because they were clearly failing"

The problem with "making the decision" is that there is no executive order for the German chancellor, as apposed to the US president in the German constitution. Ruling by chancellor decree had fallen out of favor in Germany in the last 70 years. Ms. Merkel with her dubious past with East German state security ("IM Erika") does not need to be re-elected. She needs to stand in front of a judge!

tiatia··on First they came for the Iranians
So he is banning, among others, Syrians and Somalians?

Need a passport? Just pick up a Somali passport on the street for a few bucks. They are not biometric: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/3704127.stm

Syrian passports, real and fake, are for Sale in Syria. The ISIS has its hands on real documents in occupied countries.

Sounds like a very reasonable decision for me. Should have banned Saudi Arabia, the cradle of Wahabist terrorism. too.

Not everybody has to go nuts like Merkel and open the borders for millions of illegal (by law!) immigrants.

"It's a bit more interesting wrt. most 9/11 hijackers being Saudis: I think it's pretty much confirmed at this point that it was a deliberate choice by al Qaida, attempting to deteriorate US-Saudi relations."

I think that Saudi Arabia is one of the biggest problem in the world. In fact, I wish Trump would have banned them too or even suggested a regime change:

For Iran I have high hopes. They started the fundamentalist bullshit and I have the impression they may be the first to get rid of it. In fact, there are first signs (German link, try google translate): https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&pr...

tiatia··on Inside Rolex's Manufacturing Facilities (2015)
"You can start getting very good automatics for $3k or so."

For 3k you are either looking for something extremely fancy or you are already paying for 2k for the brand. Below a few brands, some very old, all of them use swiss made mechanical automatic movement. I don't remember having been in an airport and not having seen Rolex advertisement. But someone is paying for this advertisement. And again, if you buy from a dealer he may have something like a 100% mark up.

Here is an estimate of Rolex cost vs price and it is close what I suspected. " by gathering publicly available prices for similar products, we can estimate that the production cost of an average stainless steel Rolex watch retailing at USD 5,000 is less than USD 1,000. Maybe even less than USD 750."

https://www.quora.com/How-much-does-it-actually-cost-Rolex-t...

I don't say don't buy one. But understand that you pay 80% of the cost for the brand. If you need the brand, buy it. If you just like the mechanics you can get a very good watch for a tiny fraction of the price.

tiatia··on Inside Rolex's Manufacturing Facilities (2015)
You can get a very good mechanical watch for 500 Euro that would sell for 3 or 4k if it was a branded Roled.

I treasure my Submariner. It's the one article of fashion I have that goes perfectly with every outfit; it looks great with a tuxedo and it looks just as good with shorts and a t-shirt. It's incredibly well-made: I wear mine every day and after nine years together, it still looks better than the year-old iPhone in my pocket. It's also understated--at least, my stainless steel, black-bezeled Sub Date is--and it doesn't scream "expensive" or "showy" like many watches on both ends of the price spectrum often do.

"There are a few advantages to owning a Rolex that may not be so obvious: For starters, it's quickly exchangeable for a high percentage of its value in cash in virtually any major city in the world."

Please define "high". I have seen a Rolex sold for less than its value in gold (gold rolex).

They have sales tax (20% in Europe). The shop has likely something like a 100% mark up on a watch. Most of the costs of the Rolex are for advertisement. You can get a same quality watch for a tiny fraction of the price.

"Because you're always wearing it, that's $8,000+ in cash that you can have in short order if you needed it badly" If it is not made out of gold, I suspect you would get 1 or 2 grand for it. On a good day.

I own a Xiaomi product (not a phone)

Xiaomi phones have the same problem as all Chinese phones: If you can't put Cyanogen mod on it, it is close to useless.

tiatia··on Jack Ma's theory of how America went wrong over the past 30 years
"By almost every and any measure, we are all better off than 30, 40 or 50 years ago - Chinese, Americans, Indians, Europeans, almost everyone. There IS a subset within those places that has benefited less, or even gone backwards, no doubt."

I think you could doubt this for European and Americans. Yes, you have scientific progress. You can afford a hand-held super computer now. You can afford a car with 150 HP. You may get treatment for a disease that would have killed you 30 years ago. But:

- 50% youth unemployment rate in Spain? - Out of control house prices due to asset price inflation? - Central Banks Zero interest rates with unknown consequences. - And ever rising retirement age due to basically bankrupt retirement funds (yes, we live longer too) - Out of control health care costs in the US - Totally out of control big brother regulations

Once you were able to buy a house, a car, health insurance and raise kids with a single income.

tiatia··on What If Time Really Exists? (2008)
"There is no serious evidence for the simulation theory." Well, there are weird effects that would make sense in a simulated world (like superposition until observed). But the argument is a statistical one.

Can a world be simulated in a computer?

If yes, how many worlds and individuals are simulated at the same time? (And it may make sense for example market research, science etc. Of cause the simulation will run much faster then the real world).

Then there is a problem. If the world CAN be simulated and MUCH MORE simulated individuals exists than real persons it is more likely for you to live in a simulation than in the real world. A point worth thinking about.

tiatia··on Ask HN: What are your greatest books?
"The World Is Flat - Thomas Friedman"

A terrible book. Looks like he made a talk he gave or a paper into a book. Says nothing in several hundred pages that he could not say in a few. Many things are actually wrong. If the world would be flat, geopolitics would be meaningless.
