thwy12321··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2018?
Zarathustra by Nietzsche, "Nietzsche's teaching" and "The mask of enlightenment" as companion texts

thwy12321··on AlphaFold at CASP13: What just happened?
There's scores of evidence and studies about this. Don't feel like looking all of them up.

thwy12321··on The enormous life of Anthony Bourdain, according to those who knew him best
Why is the highest purpose in life children? Of course he had a responsibility for another human being, but why is that the highest good? Are we not allowed to strive for more? Or consider other higher goods?
thwy12321··on Source: Google Allo will be officially shut down soon
I always wonder if the other projects are just retainer projects. They dont really care as much what happens, they just dont want those engineers on the open market.
thwy12321··on Source: Google Allo will be officially shut down soon
Google's main problem is that they only promote people for releasing new products. So all the engineers and product people are highly incentive to only work on new launches. Doesn't even matter what it is. So now they end up with all these garbage products laying around, none of which make them any money.
thwy12321··on Source: Google Allo will be officially shut down soon
Only promoting people who launch new products, so they end up with a ton of useless new products.
thwy12321··on Code2vec: learning distributed representations of code
JIRA could be parsed to do this, specifically when git commits are tagged to tickets. Quite an effort to get all that data in the right form though
thwy12321··on Using D to Create the World’s Fastest File System
Is this true? Mind speaking on which types of projects it was mostly used?
thwy12321··on Nasdaq Acquires Quandl to Advance the Use of Alternative Data
this is what people in this thread dont really understand, investors want the raw feed. Theres nothing to be gained from an aggregated, cleaned feed that everyone has
thwy12321··on Quora User Data Compromised
Really? Do tell
thwy12321··on NULL: The worst mistake of computer science? (2015)
OOP meaning React.Component, functional meaning immutable html state, property inheritance, render(), etc
thwy12321··on NULL: The worst mistake of computer science? (2015)
"The key point here is our programmers are Googlers, they’re not researchers. They’re typically, fairly young, fresh out of school, probably learned Java, maybe learned C or C++, probably learned Python. They’re not capable of understanding a brilliant language but we want to use them to build good software. So, the language that we give them has to be easy for them to understand and easy to adopt. – Rob Pike"

When did computer science become about hand holding? has it always been this way? Look at react. It was designed to force functional programming concepts in an OOP manner. Is the future of programming the implementation of tightly controlled interfaces with extreme type safety? I would argue thats where we are going. Things are becoming less expressive, not more.

thwy12321··on The Friendship That Made Google Huge
"Interesting to see the genesis of the myth of the 10x programmer."

How could it be a myth? Ever see a professional sports player compete against a non professional player? Why wouldnt this dynamic exist in programming?

thwy12321··on Quora User Data Compromised
The big companies, Google/Fb/etc hire that way but they also bring on niche experts. Leet code at those companies is for the code monkeys. They hire the people writing the ML/distributed systems/security code out of PhD programs and targeted hiring. Theres more to it, dont feel like typing it all up
thwy12321··on Quora User Data Compromised
My take on Quora and business like them:

They are hiring people based on leet code questions and school prestige and not based on real technical knowledge about systems. Their business people are top school MBA grads with no security domain expertise. They then proceed to build massive data collection programs using open source tooling that non of them fully understand. Their business model depends on that data and monetizing it in various ways. An so the complexity of their application goes through the roof with regards to user data. Their user facing web apps are the tip of the iceberg for a massive surveillance scheme.

thwy12321··on China ‘Is the Only One in the Race’ to Make Electric Buses, Taxis and Trucks
Write China scare article -> Get more page clicks.

Are we done with this yet?

thwy12321··on Google Tried to Patent My Work After a Job Interview
For the most part a software engineering job at google is pretty mediocre from a coding perspective. Most people hired there will never work on cutting edge tech. For the enlightened few its amazing. This is speaking strictly about the work, and not the money/prestige/perks.
thwy12321··on ‘I’m Broke and Mostly Friendless, and I’ve Wasted My Whole Life’
"It is misogynist in its worldview"

How can something that's an accurate description of reality be misogynist? Unless you are claiming what I said to be false.

thwy12321··on ‘I’m Broke and Mostly Friendless, and I’ve Wasted My Whole Life’
The weird thing is most people will call you a misogynist for bringing this up. I would argue that in most major US cities there is already a large "harem" dynamic. It's mostly invisible to the general population, but quite obvious if you're friends with men in the top 1 to 2% of dating potential.
thwy12321··on ‘I’m Broke and Mostly Friendless, and I’ve Wasted My Whole Life’
This is the elephant in the room that most people don't want to discuss. Young women get confused, they are able to "short term date" men out of their league and so then balk at men who are their equals. I've seen a number of awkward marriage dynamics where the women was used to dating men of higher caliber than the man she married.
thwy12321··on Competition Is Dying, and Taking Capitalism with It?
They were once the big bad "monopolies". Now they're just mediocre companies. Weird how manipulated people can be by narratives. Show me any company who has dominated for 50 years, thats something to worry about. Both FB and Google could lose 50% of their value in a month. See the recent FB stock drop. Its a complete fallacy, a trendy thought narrative, its propaganda.
thwy12321··on Competition Is Dying, and Taking Capitalism with It?
I'm saying that its true that some are monopolies, but none really stay that way for long, and so its completely overrated to worry about. It's a similar talking point to how we are in an "AI bubble", good for clicks on an article.

Look at FB stock, it just dropped from 220 -> ~130, they saw almost half of their market cap wiped away in a few weeks. The monopoly idea is a narrative invented to stoke fear, outrage, and page clicks. It's a talking point for psuedo educated people.

thwy12321··on Competition Is Dying, and Taking Capitalism with It?
Big tech companies arent really monopolies. A ton of them can disappear overnight, its just a trendy thing to harp on. Look at the irrelevance of IBM, CISCO, HP, Intel, Oracle, etc. The list goes on and on, companies fail to innovate after a certain point and most die. Enough with the monopoly narrative.
thwy12321··on Amazon Elastic Inference – GPU-Powered Deep Learning Inference Acceleration
How is there not more interest in this? This is huge for anyone trying to bootstrap a machine learning business. If you need a 24/7 on prediction service the costs of full fledged GPUs can be prohibitive and a waste. This allows me to distribute my prediction across multiple nodes.
thwy12321··on What is next when the hype around data science and deep learning fades away?
distributed ledger, replacement of intermediaries
thwy12321··on Ask HN: Why not more hiring of junior devs, then on-the-job-training?
There is no developer shortage. If anything the junior level is saturated. Good companies are afraid to hire bad developers because bad code is a long term cost.
thwy12321··on If you want to understand Silicon Valley, watch Silicon Valley
The whole reason that the investment industry exists is because nobody puts that much money at risk in an index fund. Hedge funds literally exist for that reason. This whole idea that trump would drop his wealth in an index fund is propaganda, its meant to manipulate you about trumps incompetency.
thwy12321··on Science Is Getting Less Bang for Its Buck
The crazy thing is that in some companies/jobs you could be fired for posting this.
thwy12321··on Suicide increasing among American workers
If anything Robert Sapolsky is heavily "red pill". There's a video of him on youtube saying that up to 10% of children are secretly illegitimate.
