thunkle··on Switching from QWERTY to Colemak and Back
I type Dvorak all day at work, and Qwerty everywhere else, my brain can switch freely between the two no problem. I have no idea why this is possible, but it is.
thunkle··on Bard and new AI features in Search
Is this like chatGPT?
thunkle··on Tips for a Junior Developer (2019)
After 15 years of engineering... I'm still insecure. So are most engineers. I wouldn't tell someone to stop being insecure. I'd let them know it's totally normal to feel insecure.
thunkle··on Zeno’s paradox
This analogous to the "grim reaper paradox"
thunkle··on Asymmetry detected in the distribution of galaxies
How do they know the galaxies are connected?
thunkle··on Kindness, tech staffing and resource allocation
Yes

I just got laid off from Stripe on Thursday. Our team was up to it's neck with work that needed to be done. Other teams as well we're in disparate need of more engineers. They didn't do layoffs because they had excess employees, it was because they wanted to reduce run rate in the face of uncertainty.
thunkle··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
Ya'll are hyper focusing on the nights and weekends. That was my personal decision, not part of the culture.
thunkle··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
I work for Stripe and got laid off this morning. Sucks because my manager was only told this morning, and didn't have a chance to talk about how well I was doing or take any part in the decision making. We'll at least I'll get a break. I worked nights and weekends all of October.
thunkle··on Ask HN: How should I spend my companies $500 education budget?
I'm currently interested in roguelike game development, but I probably couldn't justify that as helping my current job.
thunkle··on Ask HN: How should I spend my companies $500 education budget?
Anything in particular?
thunkle··on Ask HN: How should I spend my companies $500 education budget?
We actually already have access to O'Reilly learning, but I can't say I take advantage of it. How would you approach learning via O'Reilly Learning?
thunkle··on Ask HN: How should I spend my companies $500 education budget?
I'd prefer not to travel. I've been to a few conferences, and haven't gotten as much out of them as I'd imagined I would.
thunkle··on Espresso.js – minimal React alternative – is now a decade old
You can tell it's old because it is some derivative of "java".
thunkle··on Lessons from a Professional Password Cracker
Ha. Did you make your name for this comment?
thunkle··on What it takes to make a game by yourself
After playing brogue for a couple of years, I'm really intrigued by rogue like development. I haven't started yet, but something seems more approachable about having a bunch of ascii characters as the gui.
thunkle··on Living Like Nothing Matters
I realized this one evening driving under the stary sky. I had a full-blown panic attack. It's been 15 years and I still have trouble driving under the sky. I guess I'm basically agoraphobic, but after some googling it's probably better described by spacephobia, although I'm not convinced that's it either, I wonder if there is a perspective based phobia.
thunkle··on Protohackers: Server Programming Challenge
I really like the idea, but the effort required to boot up a server is holding me back.
thunkle··on Does Popper’s Falsification Principle Itself Need to Be Falsifiable?
Maybe this is helpful https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_belief
thunkle··on Ask HN: What book have you re-read 3x or more?
Hannibal and me. I love the way it combines selfhelp/strategy with history. It uses Hannibal, Scipio, and Flavius as kind of architypes on how we can act at different points in our life, etc... It's fasinating.
thunkle··on On tea and the art of doing nothing
I've always had a sensitivity.
thunkle··on On tea and the art of doing nothing
Thank you for tao of tea. They introduced me to Puer, which became my go-to for a long time.
thunkle··on On tea and the art of doing nothing
I've been extremely sensitive to caffeine and so coffee doesn't work for me. Recently I've been enjoying the ritual of preparing white tea from one of those hard tea disks. I have a special tea knife that lets me pry away layers, I then put them in a small tea pot (8oz) do a first rinse, and add the specific water temp and the specific time. I've found the ritual itself to be quite tactile and pleasing and the caffeine to not be too overpowering. It's a lovely way to wake up or take a work break.
thunkle··on Ask HN: Contractors, what is your hourly rate?
Cool I've been working on an algorithm to predict when an industrial refrigerator is going bad for a few months now. I wonder if our work overlaps at all.
thunkle··on Remote startups will win the war for top talent
Working remotely since covid has actually been a boon personally.

I have intense anxiety and panic when working in skyscrapers. I get a feeling similar to fear of heights and I'm unable to function productively.

In addition I was able to mitigate some of my interviewing anxiety by drinking half a glass of wine during the remote interview.

I now get to work at a FAANG company where previously my mental health/anxiety would have barred me from even having a shot.

thunkle··on Quaternions: A Practical Guide
I can't thank you enough for the Julie fractal link. It was super enlightening to someone who has enjoyed fractals and seen the formula but has never grasped the mechanics.
thunkle··on My customized Wim Hof breathing method
While practicing, right when I start to get lightheaded and my vision gets a little sparkIy, i have an uncontrollable mini panic attack until my vision returns to normal. It's anything but relaxing in my experience.
thunkle··on Does the Past Still Exist?
Perhaps Isaiah 65:17 "For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind."
thunkle··on Does the Past Still Exist?
Yeah, exactly. How did you come about this?
