You can spew ads and shit wherever they’ll let you, doesn’t enrich the environment by default.
I get what you mean, but I’m still unconvinced of Reddit as a meaningful platform.
If you feed stray dogs, you end up with a neighborhood full of dogshit everywhere you step. Bill them; if they don’t pay, talk to an attorney.
Not sure how big of a priority this is for the team that runs it, but I would probably use it 20x more if it was ran competently.
Without fairness, there’s really no easy way to talk about strategy.
This is really his website at this point. The rules are mainly just his tools for shaping the content of discussions and submissions to his liking.
A decade ago it was different. I mean, he was still way overbearing and biased, but I don’t think it really had the same power-steering effect on the shapes of discussions as it does today. Over time, this is where we’ve come to.
Most programmers don’t really seem to understand that programming isn’t really their job. It’s an illusion. Their job is to create value to the shareholders. That’s not really that much fun, and once the joy of writing and reading code is slowly squeezed away from their position is when those with sanity still intact start thinking “Man, I ought to get the fuck up out of here and find a real job or something.” The really lucky ones are outdoorsy folks that can afford to do the homesteading thing, or are willing to forego the immense compensation that tech work so often allures them with.
Just my two cents. I was blessed to retire in my thirties, so I could be entirely out of touch, though I hear many things.
If that sounds fucked up when I say it like that, consider what assumptions you’re making, because that’s literally YOUR argument here.
I’m sure there’s slack plugins for what you’re suggesting, though. Not sure how useful it’d be since most big ticket items would be in the brief each day and the smaller ephemeral stuff gets resolved with slack messages or chats.
I was approaching the topic with a smidge of nuance and perhaps that was not clear, and I’m sorry.
Identity is definitely an issue in modern political culture, but I don’t know if PG can solve it anymore than you and I can. I think people just need to recognize and appreciate conjunctive nuances in their own opinions. Politics is identity AND culture AND religion etc etc. that’s my contention anyways.
Thanks for the thoughtful reply yourself!
All I’m saying is that politics is as intertwined with technology news as much as economics or religion or pop culture or anything else, and imho should be considered as equally valid sidebar conversations as the others.
If we can’t talk about things that make people uncomfortable, sicko people will take control of those very things and we will all suffer down the road. Better to just bite the bullet and let it all hang out.
A market crash like that would result in extremely broad layoffs, major global supply chain instabilities, and a cataclysmic knock on effect of capital losses into nearly every walk of life on earth.
Not to mention, as many already have, the federal govt would undoubtedly bail out the worst actors and leave the poor to fend for themselves.
Just yesterday the Treasury Department announced they aren’t going to enforce a money laundering law. You think they’re going to New Deal a major crash’s now? No way.
I think something in between Zig and Rust will emerge someday as a sort of optimal compromise between compile speed, safety, and programmability wrt memory and performance tradeoffs.
It makes sense to prioritize repairing the biggest dollar signs first, I suppose.
