thunderfork··on The death of web development education
People have been using chatbots to cheat on schoolwork for a few years now
thunderfork··on Responsible Release of AI-Generated Mathematics
Centralization of what, though? It could centralize operations while (through, eg, democracy) decentralizing power
thunderfork··on Git 3.0's upcoming SHA-256 default will be a costly mistake
A lot of replies here seem to be asserting that this "isn't that hard" without addressing the thing that makes it most hard: submodule compatibility and the breadth of tooling
thunderfork··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
We do this with laws already
thunderfork··on Optimizing x264 settings and per-title ladders
Some clients only take H264, depends on what you're delivering to. Often for web media you end up having to serve [h264, h265, av1], which is a real pain
thunderfork··on One Month Without AI
If you're not doing anything that matters, 2FA is easy. If you're doing something people actually care about, you're going to have to answer real world questions like "how do we provide support for this", "do we force certain roles to set up 2fa", "what if someone loses their phone", etc
thunderfork··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
>How could it be otherwise?

I feel like acting like things are impossible which are done in other regions without issue is a losing argument, no?

thunderfork··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
The Canadian comparison is apples to oranges when you look at and compare the ease of identification and registration (can register at the polls; a massive number of verification methods - vs - sometimes can't, very few verification methods)
thunderfork··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
I do exactly this all the time, and know many who also do this all the time, yes.

So, this refutes the bailey:

>None of the AI haters (or haters in general) are willing to put money where their mouths are.

thunderfork··on Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain
It's their choice among other viable choices, so the "problem" is on their end.

If the law mandated exactly one thing, then it'd be the law's problem. Since it doesn't, of course the choice of how to comply can be criticized.

thunderfork··on I am often wrong
I disagree, on the principle of "slow is smooth, smooth is fast"
thunderfork··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
Motte and bailey; "none" -> "vast majority"

I know plenty of people (including myself) who pay for good human artwork :)

thunderfork··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
You can't be reddit-posting and then complaining about replies being reddit, man
thunderfork··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
It's fine by me (sample size 1 Canuck)
thunderfork··on Australia 'on the same page' as Canada as it seeks deeper EU alliance
It'd depend on what you're selling, surely? I've never had any problems of this sort with basic retail product, for example
thunderfork··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
>caused accidents vs >"disrupted"

This equivocation is noted but not compelling

thunderfork··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Off the top of my head, I know there's more than one ;)
thunderfork··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
My understanding is that a parody has to actually parody the original work. There's a distinction between "parodying" and "using the songwriting with different lyrics". You see a lot of people doing riffs on "What a Wonderful World" and getting shut down by the Louis Armstrong estate, e.g.
thunderfork··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
Decent physicians recommend exercise among other preventative measures to reduce the likelihood of emergencies.

Therapists will likewise encourage you to build up resilience so that "a relationship ended" is not a crisis, and also build support networks of real people who can really come visit you when you need urgent support.

There are also, of course, crisis hotlines.

thunderfork··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
A Shopify monopoly (and thus a shopify payments monopoly) would be very rough for a number of reasons
thunderfork··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
>Jamstack is an architectural approach that decouples the web experience layer from data and business logic, improving flexibility, scalability, performance, and maintainability.

>Jamstack removes the need for business logic to dictate the web experience.

>It enables a composable architecture for the web where custom logic and 3rd party services are consumed through APIs.

How far into this front page blurb do you think the average non-dev would get before they realize this is supposed to be a thing they can use in place of WordPress?

thunderfork··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
>github repository

You have already lost the "normal people" audience

thunderfork··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
Accounting is generally both easier to do correctly and easier to verify than security practices, unfortunately
thunderfork··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
"throw away all software written before 2026" does technically solve this problem, if you ignore everything else the article is talking about (deployment and continuity of service)
thunderfork··on Jellyfin 12.0
IIRC, in many containers embedded subtitles will be interleaved with the video and audio atoms/boxes/packets/etc., and so pulling out the subtitles requires scanning the full file. Not quite as expensive as decoding or re-encoding, but still as slow as "stream the full file into memory and demux the streams"
thunderfork··on TiVo to charge money for skipping commercials in your own recordings
I'm inferring that "banning skipping commercials" is a restriction on the part of the service provider, not on the part of France's legislature
thunderfork··on It took a year to ship WebAssembly in Anubis
BOINC isn't really built for "small tasks", afaik. Once you get small enough, the work the server is doing to manage the tasks gets to be around the same cost as the server just doing the tasks itself.
thunderfork··on Artificial beaver dams saw juvenile coho salmon survival rates go from 8% to 60%
environmentalists well-known for instituting fire lane policies
thunderfork··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
You have to look to the people for whom those decades brought joy, and realize how grandly that outnumbers complaints...

and if you find yourself blessed enough to be in that position does the road, then "reading HN" is a problem that solves itself ;)

thunderfork··on Autistici/Inventati's main .org domain goes dark after US terrorism designation
