throwuxiytayq··on Pi's Minimalism Is Its Advantage
This is getting silly, I can’t tell whether you are kidding, never launched a Node-based app, or never checked htop.

> that can run their tool calls in a separate process/host

That indeed seems like a simple and elegant setup. I can’t recall a single instance of using a harness when I didn’t want the tool calls to be local, though. Why would I be SSHing into a SBC just to run the agent back on my laptop?

> You can have a single instance running that handles your sessions in parallel.

Sounds even more elegant! Presumably, they communicate via HTTP?

> implicitly asserts that you need that many instances running at once.

I don’t need to, but I can. That’s the entire point, in case you’re still missing it.

> Your arguments against Javascript appear to be based on fallacies, lack of understanding of technology, and strong emotions against JS rather than actual fact.

How beautifully ironic.

throwuxiytayq··on Pi's Minimalism Is Its Advantage
Consider this:

- I regularly have 10+ instances of my harness running or idling on my laptop.

- My laptop is often at near-100% CPU and memory usage due to the (irreducible) cost of the development tools and environment.

- I often (50% of the time) downclock my laptop’s CPU to 1-2 GHz to save battery and/or reduce noise and thermals while charging.

- I sometimes run my harness on machines that are low-power, low-RAM single-board computers.

If my harness was written in JS, this would be both annoying in terms of responsiveness and limiting in terms of how much work I can do in parallel. This is why using JS for serious software is a... subpar decision.

> but then it also means you can't use Claude Code because it also runs on top of JS.

Correct. I don’t use Claude Code.

> Being contrarian for the sake of it is not good form.

Why would you say that? Is it good form to post that someone is being contrarian for the sake of it? OP’s comment looks like constructive criticism with plenty of good points.

> It took the same amount of time (3.5 seconds) as cursor-agent and codex on my machine.

So what? Nobody is pretending that these are minimalist. Codex is 1.2M of Rust LOC.

> which necessarily means that you have some powerful and expressive extension language, ideally the one the harness was written in.

Don’t be silly, JS is a joke. I was going to check Pi out, but now that I know it’s based on a shitty stack, I’m staying the fuck away from it. I don’t have the RAM to spare.

> If these are your complaints, then this is one of the strongest endorsements of Pi that I've ever seen. I think I'm bookmarking this comment.

Spot on, but why don’t you go implement a solution for the famously trivial problem of cloth self-intersection (and make it still work on my shitty phone).

24 GB does sound pretty sweet. I’ll check if they still offer that, thanks. The price of having to accept an Oracle EULA might just be higher than anything else mentioned thus far, though.

I have - both considered it and actually did it for a while.

A few years, one hack, and a couple of apartment changes later, my server is behind on maintenance and lying somewhere waiting for me to set it up and update it. Meanwhile, my free action workflows just keep working. On a good day, at least - Microsoft’s SLA is like one 9 and it’s on the wrong side of the comma.

Virtualizing macOS on non-Apple hardware is illegal. That, and in between the costs of hardware (even assuming I breach their licence and go non-Apple) and the costs of electricity, this quickly becomes a sizeable time and cash investment.

VPS bills accumulate. I must have saved hundreds or thousands of dollars by not hosting this myself over the years.

They’re free, too. If your project is public, you can spin up dozens (hundreds?) of jobs (10 or so of which will run in parallel) on every push and Microsoft casually pays for it. I’d love to move off GH but I would have to significantly reduce my CI usage (before you ask - already more optimized than anything you usually see) or pay quite a lot for my hobby projects.

throwuxiytayq··on AI in Linux
Good luck to you, but I hope you’re mentally prepared to face the future where an average software developer increases their use of AI by orders of magnitude.
throwuxiytayq··on AI in Linux
> These are thought-terminating cliches; not logical arguments

Consider sometimes terminating some thoughts and replacing them with actually useful ones. It’s good for you and your goals regardless of what they are.

People burning thought-hours on pretending that we can make AI go away are basically doing nothing except emitting CO2 and consuming water. If you want change, start with yourself!

Anyway, so far zero actionable suggestions for Torvalds in the article or in this thread. Great job so far.

throwuxiytayq··on AI in Linux
Kernel developers just aren’t emitting that much CO2 with their proompting. It’s okay that you’re pissed off, but it would be more productive if you were pissed off by real world issues.
throwuxiytayq··on AI in Linux
I'm not making an argument to keep AI around or use it, I'm just saying that it stays. Reading comprehension on the internet these days...

> How do I know if comments like this come from a real person or a bot?

Presumably, I'm a bot because you disagree with me.

> Your suggestion that "anything popular cannot be morally wrong" is proposterous. > just because something is useful and popular doesn't meant it doesn't have negative externalities and doesn't mean people shouldn't fight to make it better.

PREposterous. And I said nothing of the sort. It feels like you're hallucinating things nobody said in a way I strongly associate with bot spam.

> Improving emissions standards is important even though lots of people drive cars. The same can absolutely be true of AI.

The article did not at any point suggest that we need to improve and optimize AI. There is no magic wand that Linus can wave to measure how much water the incoming AI-assisted contributions are using. The guy should just go protest at a data center construction site or something; the article is pointless and completely fails to diagnose the actual problems with AI or propose viable solutions.

throwuxiytayq··on AI in Linux
tl;dr Kernel devs should prompt less because it uses up water or something.

Repeat after me: you can't put the cat back in the bag. Pandora's box is open. Sucks, but you have to learn to live with the reality that most developers will use AI to write code from now on.

Disgusting. I’ve never had to let anyone touch my phone in my entire life in any country I’ve visited.

Is there a list of countries that does this? At this point it’s obvious I won’t ever be traveling to the US, but I’m curious if genuinely authoritarian countries like China are actually less of a police state at the border than the USA.
