throwuwu··on Beyond A*: Better Planning with Transformers
Barring the singularity, just because you find something with search doesn’t mean you can’t understand why it’s better.
throwuwu··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
Feels like we’re pushing 99% now.
throwuwu··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
I’d make my tweets private too if they were that cringe
throwuwu··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
Can anyone explain in simple terms what the actual harm would be of allowing everyone to generate images with whatever racial composition they desired? If you can specify the skin colour one way you can do it the other ways as well and instead of everyone being upset at having this forced down our throats we’d probably all be liking pictures of interesting concepts like what if Native Americans were the first to land on the moon or what if America was colonized by African nations and all the founding fathers were black. No one opposes these concepts, people just hate having it arbitrarily forced on them.
throwuwu··on Unexpected responses from ChatGPT: Incident Report
Original sources aren’t necessarily infallible either, but that’s beside the point, asking ChatGPT needs to be viewed as asking a person to recount something from memory. It hasn’t been reviewed or edited so it’s like a first draft rather than a published document. That’s the error that people tend to make since they treat it like a search engine instead of a conversation.
throwuwu··on Unexpected responses from ChatGPT: Incident Report
They just want to reinforce their own bias that OpenAI BAD and DUMB, rationalism GOOD! When it’s their own fault for not understanding enough theory to know what happens if there were to be a loss of precision in the predicted embedding vector that maps to a token. If enough decimal places are lopped off or nudged then that moves the predicted vector slightly away from where it should be and you get a nearby token instead. Instant aphasia. The report said it was a GPU configuration problem so my guess is the wrong precision was used in some number of GPUs but I have no idea how they configure their cluster so take that with a giant grain of salt.
throwuwu··on Let's not do this again, please
Yuck. So many half truths and outright lies. This is straight up propaganda. Look into any of the assertions given here and you’ll see what I mean. Designed to fool headline readers only.
throwuwu··on Sora: Creating video from text
It won’t last. There’s a massive incentive to build more GPUs and develop specialized chips and everyone who can is scrambling to meet that demand. The technology is not some trade secret that no one can copy which is why there are so many people and companies diving into this market now. Hardware is a bit slow to ramp up production of but it will get there eventually because there’s money to be made.
throwuwu··on Sora: Creating video from text
Honestly, I don’t think the unemployment rate will change much. Humans are great at inventing things to do and if other people see those things as valuable they will pay for them. I do think the world will look very different, maybe even unrecognizable but it’s not going to be full of people doing nothing.
throwuwu··on Sora: Creating video from text
In what way does anyone have a monopoly on generated images and video? Last I checked there were several major players and more startups than you can shake a stick at.

throwuwu··on Show HN: Gitlab Meeting Simulator 2024
I’m pretty sure you could record and transcribe in person meetings just as easily. I’d bet there are several services doing that now but it would also be an incredibly simple project to build in house. The only problem is identifying who is speaking which could be a deal breaker for some uses.
throwuwu··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
Despite all your bluster you obviously have no idea what you’re talking about if you think exoplanet detection techniques can tell us if there is even a single radio transmitter on that planet.
throwuwu··on Ask HN: Alternatives to the Pomodoro technique?
That’s an excellent blog post!
throwuwu··on Drowning in code: The ever-growing problem of ever-growing codebases
If you have an AI capable of writing machine code based on natural language you likely also have an AI that can translate that machine code to any other language you would like. You could then use a normal compiler to verify if it is correct and then read the code yourself. Or you could just get good at reading and writing assembly.
throwuwu··on Drowning in code: The ever-growing problem of ever-growing codebases
While I do think we’ll go through a phase where AI writes a significant amount of code I think it will eventually replace the need for most software. To illustrate what I mean, take your browser example. Why would you even want a browser when you can just make a request to the AI and it can give you exactly the information or images you are looking for formatted in your preferred style and edited and annotated to perfectly match your ability to comprehend it? Honestly, I think it will go beyond even that. Our current mode of consuming information may be entirely replaced by simply conversing with personalized AI. We won’t search for information, our assistant will spontaneously tell us what we need to know and we will interrogate it about things that spark our interest. There will be no UI, only an active agent that you speak with and write to who answers your questions, acts on your behalf and delivers the information you want as a document on a tablet, a video on a screen, an immersive VR experience or performed as ballad if the mood strikes you.
throwuwu··on Drowning in code: The ever-growing problem of ever-growing codebases
This already happens when you compile code for a specific architecture. The thing you fear will happen has already happened and we’re fine.

I’d worry more about generated code from an AI that doesn’t fully understand the codebase. That would be as bad as letting the junior devs run loose.

throwuwu··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
Who are you responding to? I gave one reason and it’s called the inverse square law. The distances we’re talking about are unimaginably huge so the chances of any signal reaching us is practically zero unless it’s close by (within a few hundred light years) and intentionally directed at us with sufficient power.
throwuwu··on Ask HN: Alternatives to the Pomodoro technique?
Pomodoro never worked for me since I work best when I get into flow and keep going for 1 to 4 hours. What I have found helps is planning as much as possible up front and dedicating time to do so. I braindump everything then when that’s exhausted I rewrite it in a structured way and add detail, breaking it up into sections and gathering resources I need, then I make an exhaustive todo list of tiny steps in chronological order and I mean really tiny steps with concrete outcomes. Then when I start working I just follow the plan and since I’m very familiar with it by this point I don’t have to refer back to it all the time but I do make sure to check it in order to stay on track usually when I reach a point where I’m uncertain of what to do next. I also add to the document when necessary.
throwuwu··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
Hard to say what would happen but I think we still need to avoid the assumption that each star system remains relatively static especially over very long periods of time. You also need to consider the purpose behind colonization, if it is to spread the existence of your civilization to new worlds then no one says those worlds must be uninhabited.
throwuwu··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
You should really look into the limits of radio astronomy, it’s not as easy as you seem to think.
throwuwu··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
If we’re talking specifically about interstellar craft with enough shielding to survive an uncontrolled reentry at high velocity then what the heck are those going to be doing near a planet? Sublight travel would have to be performed by craft large enough to support the crew for years if not decades or generations. You’re not going to want to maneuver that much mass into orbit around a planet. They’d be better off parked in a trojan orbit and letting smaller craft move people and supplies back and forth You might as well try to hijack an aircraft carrier and fat chance of surprising anyone if you could pull it off.

To get a ship to hit the ground at the velocity you’re talking about a large chunk of it would need to be solid steel like a bullet basically. Space craft aren’t built like that, they need to be mostly empty space for storing propellant and people. A reactor and its shielding might survive but that’s on the scale of 5 - 10 meters and it’s still not 100% solid so it doesn’t compare to a large metallic asteroid.

Throwing rocks at a planet might work but you need the right equipment and expertise to bullseye a planet from 100 million miles away and if anyone saw you do it they could take their time intercepting the rock.

throwuwu··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
No, I imagine them doing exactly the same thing we are: using more and more efficient methods of communication as we develop them. Compressing and encoding data, focusing our transmissions where they need to be instead of blasting at max power in all directions, using the most effective form of transmission for the purpose whether it’s laser, microwaves, specific wavelengths of radio, or hard line connections for planet side comms. Signals decay very rapidly over distance so unless you have a very good reason to build a gigantic transmitter capable of reaching beyond a few light years in all directions you’re not going to just accidentally wind up communicating with a random star 100ly away.
throwuwu··on The loss of things I took for granted
Video and audio presentations are a much slower way to ingest information, even when played at 2x speed.

Text on a page allowed the reader to rapidly scan back to previous points to make connections between concepts. Similarly you can scan forwards quickly and then return and read more closely after identifying key words and topics.

Text gives additional structure to the information with clearly delineated paragraphs, sections, chapters and italicized or bolded words and phrases. Citations and footnotes, asides and figures can be referred to more easily than in a video or audio where they must occur linearly.

Text is also more easily modified and marked up by the reader making referring back to important parts simple, being able to do so at a glance of the page rather than scrobbling through the video or audio.

I’m sure others can think of many more but the point is that text is more information dense and less linear than video/audio.

Not silent, just not broadcasting.
throwuwu··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
What if they’re really greedy about energy and store everything they can in superconductors?
throwuwu··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
I don’t think we’re going to build rock crushers in space. With all that available energy it’d make more sense to just throw the whole rock into a smelter and fractionate the elements as they boil off. Why waste the slag either? You need all the material you can get so hang on to it and use it as ballast or extract the carbon and silicon from it. It’s more likely that we don’t see waste because there isn’t any, a dollar saved is a dollar earned.
throwuwu··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
You might want to check the physics on your assertion that a starship could take out a city. It’d have to be designed to do so otherwise it would just vaporize as it entered the atmosphere at the velocity you’d need for that kind of impact.
throwuwu··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
If you assume FTL travel will never be developed then distance and time are simple limiting factors. How do you keep a cohesive civilization going when communication takes 200 years? Or even just 20? Here on Earth entirely new languages and cultures arose across distances that wouldn’t even cross a state line when communication was limited to a small handful of travellers and merchants. Any colony further away than 5ly would quickly diverge. I’m pulling that number out of my hat but I’m sure you could figure out the effect of time spent in journey on willingness to travel. Not many people would commit significant chunks of their lives to interstellar business trips. Radio communications won’t solve it either since they’d be out of date and essentially one way if it took decades to get a response. No I think any interstellar colonization effort would immediately create competing civilizations distinct from their homeworld.
