lol, that ship sailed years ago
throwthrowuknow··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
While I mostly agree, I think this is something we need to assume the Pareto principle applies to: likely 20% of humans will improve but 80% will not.
throwthrowuknow··on How to Write with an LLM
artificially-flavoured is also a tic unless the author was trying to make fun of load-bearing, but it’s a bit too subtle to make the point
throwthrowuknow··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
This isn’t moral panic, it’s saying “hey, all these influential people are intimately connected across the strongest possible dimensions (money, sex, belief and legal grey areas), we should probably pay attention to that”
throwthrowuknow··on Why So Many AI Researchers Think the Machines Could Kill Everyone
Cool as long as I can still have my own firepit in my backyard, have a campfire when I go camping, have a gas stove, a furnace, birthday candles, etc.
throwthrowuknow··on AI is not a normal technology
Pretty funny how the author fails to identify what the new jobs will be like and then immediately follows it up with the answer but in a way that is oblivious to what is of value in a post scarcity world: AI cannot be human.

The flop is that he jumps to the assumption that being human means hand carving wood or some other nonsense.

The thing that people desire above all else when all their material needs are met is human connection and involvement. Whether that is friendship, love, conversation, rivalry, companionship, gossip, play, competition or even just the silent presence of others. Honestly, just use your brain, why else do extremely wealthy people have multiple large houses, yachts, clubs, etc.? It’s not so they can just sit in them alone and admire their grandeur. Those things are for entertaining their friends and embarrassing their enemies, for hospitality, for lending while not in use to curry favour, to rise in social circles. It’s all about people.

This has been the case all throughout history for the wealthy. Ample documentation everywhere and no one sees it. Instead everyone is dumbfounded about what they’re going to do when they can’t spend all day turning a wrench or typing on a keyboard. Have you never entertained the idea of what you would do if you won the lottery tomorrow?

throwthrowuknow··on Why So Many AI Researchers Think the Machines Could Kill Everyone
This is the same description as any other technology including fire.
throwthrowuknow··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
I didn’t specify genetics
throwthrowuknow··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
It should be easy to calculate this for your own needs based on your playlists. The advantage of buying is that you build up your own catalog of artists that you listen to regularly which means you don’t have to keep paying for them. So, at first, buying the albums would be more expensive but after a few years it would become much less expensive. The exception would be if you are always looking for the latest tracks by a large number of artists but I don’t think that’s most people.

Older popular music can be purchased second hand or as a various artists album which also saves money.

throwthrowuknow··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
You’re leaving out some options for sure. Not everyone would need to live under the conditions of a police state, you could theoretically screen everyone and assign them to various levels of risk which would determine their level of supervision.
throwthrowuknow··on An Alien Mind
Development and improvement of nuclear weapons was an entirely American project until the technology was exfiltrated and then it became an instant arms race. That cat is already out of the bag with LLMs. Distillation is just the fastest way to keep pace but that in no way prevents other countries and actors from doing it the hard way.

An arms race doesn’t imply one side winning, it’s not a race with an end goal, it’s a race to keep pace or retake the lead position which can oscillate between the parties involved indefinitely. The other option is to agree to make no further progress or to disarm.

throwthrowuknow··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Nah, it’s just a deliberate setup for a false flag attack by “rogue AGI” which will necessitate widespread crackdowns on internet access and computer ownership so that control over communications can be centralized again.
throwthrowuknow··on OpenShot 4.0 – Open-source video editor
I can’t help but laugh at this, it’s like a comedy skit with two people with different European accents accusing each other of being American.
throwthrowuknow··on Autonomous Mathematical Discovery in an Open-World Multi-Agent Environment
We’re watching a repeat of the arguments against Chess and Go engines.

It’s all computation, humans just can’t always experience or explain the computation they are doing at the time so we call it creativity instead.

throwthrowuknow··on Building a backyard office, the build and cost breakdown
You could do it for less than half that cost if you do your own labour. I actually came into the article thinking that’s what they did but was disappointed.
throwthrowuknow··on If this is true, the hyperscalers are toast
I’m sure it would be fine for simple routine tasks but it wouldn’t compete with OpenAI and Anthropic models
throwthrowuknow··on If this is true, the hyperscalers are toast
Hardware yes, weights? lol
throwthrowuknow··on If this is true, the hyperscalers are toast
From what’s presented this seems to be the lower end of Q&A and reasoning tasks and not long horizon agentic work. I agree that the search engine replacement AI usage is something that can run anywhere (though it’s still better run in the cloud for speed, context length, sandboxing and convenience) but this isn’t the engine of AI growth.

Also, the average consumer is not going to be running a local model until they are built into the hardware they already buy and when they are, who is supplying the weights? They’ll likely be shipped as an ASIC (or MSIC) at that point anyways. Those will use a licensed model from the current leaders. The whole argument sounds like saying that cloud services shouldn’t be profitable because everyone has a computer at home or to meme “we have AI at home”.

throwthrowuknow··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
This is very poignant. The entities that controlled the content broadcast over radio and TV or what was published in books and newspapers had an enormous impact on both culture and language. Radio and print didn’t just transmit the voice of a single person, the message was shaped by whole teams of editors, bureaucrats, politicians, censors and the necessities and constraints of the technology. Any message that a person tried to transmit through these channels was transformed more than it would be if you ran it through an LLM or more likely not transmitted at all.
throwthrowuknow··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
The bigger problem is its effect on the way we use language. The amount of LLM generated or edited media is going to keep increasing and the media that people consume affects their own word choice.
throwthrowuknow··on Suspecting court of using AI, man injected prompts in filings to try to win case
No, it doesn’t intimate that the judge would forgive benign or joke attempts at prompt injection to “expose” the use of AI, the article specifically mentions that the judge sanctioned them as a result of them continuing to add hidden text that only contained assinine comments after the initial attack. throwthrowuknow··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
I always assumed it was just a form of fingerprinting or the result thereof.
throwthrowuknow··on Ordinary Abundance
I can’t help you connect the dots. Best of luck.
throwthrowuknow··on Ordinary Abundance
Being an Uber driver has nothing to do with starting your own business.

You don’t even need to start a business to be a capitalist, just buy capital that can earn you money. That can be as simple as putting a portion of your savings in stocks or as proletarian as buying a lawnmower and a trailer and mowing people’s lawns for extra cash.

throwthrowuknow··on AI Is Threatening Natural Resources for Billions
The title is incredibly misleading. AI is not using anything that would go towards the “billions” presented in the article. So unless they are proposing moving the billions to North America in lieu of building datacenters then I don’t see a valid argument.
throwthrowuknow··on Grok Bot
I use AI for practically everything but I never outsource judgement calls to it, wish you luck, I’d love to see the postmortem.
throwthrowuknow··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
We need a new caveat cliche for these headlines like how people love to reply “in mice” to health research. For environmental research it’s almost always “in the 3rd world”
throwthrowuknow··on Protopia
I’m not calling for a revolution but we need to identify and address problems before they get out of control in order to fix them incrementally.
throwthrowuknow··on Protopia
It’s quite easy when the effects are small at first and the changes occur over decades. People just get used to the smaller changes or were not alive to experience the earlier state. Only when things become so unstable that any minor change can have extreme consequences do people start to notice.
throwthrowuknow··on Protopia
This is much too simplistic and ignores the compounding effects of bad decisions. It’s basically an argument for the happy path where nothing goes wrong but things have been going wrong for a long time. We are facing many economic, political, cultural and environmental problems that are the direct result of a viewpoint like this, that everything will just keep getting better if we keep doing more of the same thing without taking a hard look at what the longer term effects of the “progress” we’ve made along the way. We keep doubling down on the same strategies though and so things are continuing to escalate as we accumulate bugs in the system without fixing anything fundamental, worse we continue to chip away at the things that were working well.
