I could make the parallel argument for The Anarchist's Cookbook, and the difference between publication and action, but what's the point? Gender politics has been extraordinarily effective at driving reason out of such discussions.
Whether it's static or dynamic is language-dependent. Example: Java in particular does erasure on parameterized types, so generics are only compile-time.
I'm sure this is just some manner of selection or confirmation bias, but it seems cancer takes more technology luminaries than pretty much anything else.
It's difficult to elaborate on something that is a matter of taste, but some of us need our code blocks visually bookended.
where instances of sexual harassment and assault against women are so rampant there are even websites devoted to cataloging them
The existence of websites? Really? By this standard of evidence, we are also to believe that alien abductions, aspartame-induced brain cancers, and infiltration of the government by subterranean lizard-people are also rampant.
Sometimes these people have the audacity to believe that businesses should be permitted to voluntarily exchange with broadcasters and that parents should be permitted to make their own choices with regard to the content their children consume.
Anyway, I agree. I don't buy this whole "liberty" nonsense either.
OP is offering a possible partial solution to exactly the problem you present here. With fewer children born into poverty, some degree of abatement is likely. I'm not sure why you dismiss the notion out of hand, refuse to engage the actual idea, and then immediately mischaracterize the original position to be some absurd straw-man in which the OP is adjudicating the "worthless[ness]" of various people.
It's almost as if people on the internet don't know how to properly argue the actual ideas presented, and instead prefer to just make shit up.
Ironic on HN, because http://www.paulgraham.com/say.html
Fixed. Not every reader of HN shares your specific sensitivities.
It's their decision. There are myriad reasons someone may want to end his/her life. It's not the role of someone not in the headspace of the suicider to comment on what they're going through.
It's astounding that so many people want to restrict the freedom of others to be released from suffering.
Man, mugging and extortion sounds so much better now that I realize how often it happens. Thanks, res0nat0r!
I'm mainly looking at you, philwelch. Your defense of law & order has been incomparable since the beginning of this story. May your jackboots be forever bloody, good sir!
It's been discussed. It's just that it's been dismissed as irrelevant. What is relevant is that the process itself has bankrupted a brilliant man, distracted and stressed him for two years of his life, and required that he declare himself a felon, abdicating his right to vote, among many other rights, for a fucking TOS violation, that the "victim" did not even want to pursue. Additionally, it's quite likely the bargain would have included some degree of probation during which a man whose passions run deep in computing, would be banned from touching a computing device of any kind.
How you government sycophants sleep at night is beyond me. Is there nothing the agents of the Almighty State can do that would make you stop defending them?
With all due respect, sir, this is simply not true. Oftentimes, choosing nonexistence to loss of freedom, prison rape, and in general the hollow, empty existence of a caged animal is NOT an irrational choice.
Minor nitpick: The "justice" system treats rapists far better. Typical sentencing for rapists is 112 months, of which the typical rapist will serve half, from a system( rape is usually a state-level crime )with conviction rates hovering around 65%. Aaron was facing 3-4 times that, in a system( the federal courts )with a conviction rate over 90%.
