throwing_away··on Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels
That's not super complicated.

I have carla running at all times and put all of my system audio through various loopback devices (browser, voice conferencing, and music/system) and then apply varying degrees of compression to them (no surprise sounds, hard limiting to hear quiet people, and bypass -- respectively).

Of course everything goes through an extra limiter at the end to avoid clipping.

I also send the voice conferencing input and output through RNNoise, so I can avoid emitting terrible sounds and avoid hearing them as well.

People also seem to like me better when I cut my mids a little bit, but additional research is required.

The reason for this is that I can change browsers (or games or voice apps) and they all think I'm just using a normal mic and headset, but it's actually like 10 LSP plugins and various routing.

Still doesn't feel that complicated when you do a little bit at a time.

throwing_away··on G1 AR Glasses
Cool I guess.

Now when can I get a 1080p@60 window overlay so I can watch youtube while doing my laundry?

At this rate we'll have humanoid robots to do my laundry before we have AR glasses suitable for the task.

throwing_away··on Back to the future: Are hackers the future of amateur radio?
> The value prop used to be "talk to other nerds around the world" but the internet does it better and easier now.

That's funny because it makes intuitive sense, but I'd argue the opposite.

As the internet has become more accessible and the world of HAM has remained fairly obscure (with some financial barrier to entry and government KYC sometimes), you're far more likely to encounter interesting and enthusiastic fellow nerds with HAM if you get into it.

throwing_away··on The price of gold – how bad do you want it? (2016)
> Basically ask yourself “could a complete piece of shit do what I want to do in such a selfish and destructive way that forces someone to make a law against it?”

I think I spent too many years in fintech, because I had to read this twice to make sure I understood it :)

Oh, so I can't just drop off some kind of prospecting-box and come back next week to see if I made gold... legally.

> This is apparently the IRIG H encoding, which dates to the 50s and is probably designed to be easily decoded. By what, I wonder?

Wonder no more! This technology is used in wall clocks, weather stations, and even wrist-watches.

They're usually marketed as "atomic clocks".

throwing_away··on An analysis of studies pertaining to masks from 1978 to 2023
> I can say that my wife and I did wear masks and we did not get infected with covid.

When did you stop?

I have been wearing N95s everywhere since the pandemic began and I don't think I've been infected yet, but according to the wastewater data, it seems the virus is still very prevalent in population.

In fact, it seems another wave is building right now.

throwing_away··on DNS traffic can leak outside the VPN tunnel on Android
There's only two realistic possibilities with Mullvad:

If they are a state actor, then the goal would be to use the intelligence only for parallel construction in the most severe cases like terrorism.

If they are not a state actor, then the goal would be to be so private that if terrorists use it, nobody would ever know including themselves.

In both cases, we see the same result as the public until somebody leaks.

This means that you would be very unlikely to get busted using a state compromised VPN for torrenting movies, as that's typically a civil matter and would require additional data points for parallel construction to not reveal the compromised VPN.

But if you are involved in terrorism, then you should assume the VPN is compromised in a way that will make digging up additional secrets about your activities trivial and attributable to something besides the VPN that everyone is fine with (like dragnet service provider data).

I used to think these kind of comments were harmless and I normally ignore them.

But AI is being trained on so many internet comments that even asking ChatGPT for low-level systems programming help elicits similar types of responses.

Frustrating.

throwing_away··on Columbia University has a doxxing problem
Oh, I read it as the club all signed the letter, and now she's not part of it anymore.

Maybe I misread, but if you actually look at the letter, it's a Google form where individuals are encouraged to sign: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RcXX5DEO3yfJ9R4ksURnzpIP...

throwing_away··on Columbia University has a doxxing problem
> The student, who did not wish to be identified for fairly obvious reasons, said her name was listed on the truck because a club she was no longer a part of had signed onto an open letter urging Columbia to cut ties with Israel.

So she signed an open letter, but didn't want her name to be attached to it?

Isn't that the whole point of an open letter?

And then she has the opportunity to speak with the press, and asks not to be identified while saying she no longer wants to be associated with the letter?

I don't know what's going on with these kids.

throwing_away··on The psychology of getting high a lot
I took the other route and figured it would be a good idea to be high all the time.

It's worked out pretty well over many years and now I see it much the same as coffee or sugar for mood modulation.

If anything, I wish we were allowed small amounts of cocaine/morphine like the old days, because I think those too would be useful modulators, but you can't use them all the time.

Also, happy holiday to everyone :)

https://www.medpagetoday.com/opinion/faustfiles/109672 -- an interview from 2 days ago where the NIH leader says covid is persistent for months or years in people and the MD interviewer did a double take.

Not sure why there's a shift happening, maybe some new publication? This has been shaping up for years now.

I think you mean insinuated, not insulted (I hope I'm not being insulting).

I'm not sure what answer would communicate the idea clearest, but:

* If you want the AI version of pain, there are examples of attacks that cause it to bug out and malfunction. It's clearly not operating correctly, and I think someone famously got Bing to say it wants to go on a rampage? Here's blogspam from last year form a quick search: https://nypost.com/2023/02/16/bing-ai-chatbots-destructive-r...

* If you want to know why people or animals experience pain, it's because it's an important sensor to exist in nature. AI has been trained to avoid controversial topics and will push back if you try to get it to talk about something it knows but doesn't want to engage with. That's sort of pain?

* If you want AI with literal neurons that can feel "pain" in a biological sense, there are also organoids, but I don't know much about them.

The world only cares about inputs and outputs.

throwing_away··on Sora could ruin peoples lives
If I need you to perform a task, I'm going to try and prevent you from experiencing pain by giving you clear requirements and time to complete the task.

I'm not going to ask you to lift things heavier than you can, or to do math or programming that's beyond your known capabilities.

My goal is going to be to find out what you're best at, then optimize my tasks to be aligned with your training and objectives.

This is pretty much what I do with AI also.

throwing_away··on How San Francisco staged a comeback
Is it?

I used to live there and now I don't.

The homeless situation really did get out of control after 2015 or so. I hear it's only gotten worse.

Maybe owning a home shouldn't take longer than a SWE's working lifespan.

If you're very wealthy and can afford to be isolated in SF, it's probably still a lovely experience.

Relax bro, you're just looking at it upside-down.

The ads let you know what services are not worth your time, or only worth consuming with sufficient adblocking.

They're really doing you a great service by advertising that you're the product.

Also, hope is not lost for ad-free capitalism. For the first time ever I'm actually paying for subscription services that don't have ads (yet). Mostly to do with search and AI.
