throwawaysleep··on Microsoft's lack of quality control is out of control
Why "talked about switching" is irrelevant. If it is cheap enough, you will take it.
throwawaysleep··on Detection firm finds 82% of herbal remedy books on Amazon 'likely written' by AI
Given that the entire field is overwhelmingly pseudoscience anyway, it seems like a good target for a AI as the subject matter was never coherent in the first place.
throwawaysleep··on If the AI investment boom was serious, it would be focusing on electricity
You can just take it from existing people. Electricity is optional in West Virginia and Indiana.
throwawaysleep··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
> The fact that the industry collectively shrugs our shoulders and allows increasing amounts of our tech stacks to be single-vendor hostage is crazy.

Well, nobody is going to get blamed for this one except people at Amazon. Socially, this is treated as as a tornado. You have to be certain that you can beat AWS in terms of reliability for doing anything about this to be good for your career.

throwawaysleep··on Ask HN: Would you move to another state for a job?
Just learn to cheat in job interviews?
throwawaysleep··on New York Times, AP, Newsmax and others say they won't sign new Pentagon rules
And that historic peace deal in decades would be?

The last ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was in 2021.

throwawaysleep··on State Terror, American Style
> The overwhelming amount of Americans think police are good

It’s much shakier than that.

throwawaysleep··on Lessons from Russia: Silicon Valley Needs to Start Speaking Out About Trump
No. Many of them like Marc Andreessen, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos were all aboard.
throwawaysleep··on Lessons from Russia: Silicon Valley Needs to Start Speaking Out About Trump
SV is in large part to blame for Trump being there. The crypto and VC types are MAGA types and frankly, Democratic retaliation in the future should focus heavily on those groups.
throwawaysleep··on The Surrender of America's Elites
The problem is that they pushed back last time and ultimately the public said "more, more!"

Surrender makes sense, as this state of affairs is not an anomaly and not the choice of one man, but the repeated choice of the American public. This was chosen by the public and there is no reason to think they will stop choosing it.

throwawaysleep··on There is a huge pool of exceptional junior engineers
If they have to pay market for seniors anyway, why pay to raise them?

If you had to pay market rates for cows once grown, would you breed cows and feed them?

Thats the problem. If you have the pay market when they become seniors, you may as well just pay market for seniors today.

throwawaysleep··on There is a huge pool of exceptional junior engineers
I guess what’s the value of the junior there? Why is that superior to just having the seniors have their heads down coding and not being pestered by a junior?
throwawaysleep··on There is a huge pool of exceptional junior engineers
Depends on what you think the cause is. They can’t work for $20 a month legally in most cases.
throwawaysleep··on There is a huge pool of exceptional junior engineers
Is Shopify a great company?

Stock below peak in a market giving extremely rich tech valuations. Canadian engineers hardly aspire to work there. Politics of the founders also seem to come up a lot.

This isn’t meant to be an attack but more an observation that it seems to be one of the companies getting killed.

To address the article itself, the argument isn’t juniors ca seniors, but juniors vs AI. Why is a junior worth paying 10,000x more than Claude? And it’s perfectly loyal, perfectly energetic, and can add its learnings to a contributions.md doc.

throwawaysleep··on YouTube caves to Trump with $24.5M settlement
Hey, if Congress becomes an optional part of taxing large corporations, that may be a price worth paying.

Heck, summon every GOP billionaire and demand they pay a wealth “donation”

throwawaysleep··on You did this with an AI and you do not understand what you're doing here
I use them to seem engaged about something I don’t actually care about.

It’s painfully common to invite a laundry list of people to meetings.

throwawaysleep··on A shift in developer culture is impacting innovation and creativity
To be candid, even though my jobs have time to tinker, I don’t want to fight with Product or Management to get improvements into prod.

Took me half a year to get them to value Sentry, lol.

I’ll just collect my check and go do something else.

throwawaysleep··on When Knowing Someone at Meta Is the Only Way to Break Out of "Content Jail"
You don’t need to imagine. It happens frequently.
throwawaysleep··on American Prairie unlocks another 70k acres in Montana
Americans happily signed treaties with the natives and reneged. The law didn't matter as the law was ignored.
throwawaysleep··on Generative AI as Seniority-Biased Technological Change
That’s a problem years away, so… don’t think about it?
throwawaysleep··on ‘Overworked, underpaid’ humans train Google’s AI
I work for a few of these during meetings and such. Some are so picky about getting everything done quickly that I can’t believe the data is very valuable.
throwawaysleep··on ‘Overworked, underpaid’ humans train Google’s AI
Alternative is someone else does it and now you neither have money or AI training.

It has never been a successful strategy to try and fight new technology. Never.

throwawaysleep··on Ships are sailing with fake insurance from the Norwegian Ro Marine
They were not truly insured.
throwawaysleep··on CPI for all items rises 0.4% in August, 2.9% YoY; shelter and food up
Crackdown != deportations. If workers stay away from job sites, the labor is off the market even if they don’t leave the country.
throwawaysleep··on Three farmers on monopolies and mismanagement in U.S. agriculture
What is the basis for the idea that small farms are vital for food security? Farms, sure. Small farms? We need low-productivity small farms for food security?
throwawaysleep··on Three farmers on monopolies and mismanagement in U.S. agriculture
> being in a society means having a safety net.

The people in rural areas strongly disagree with that statement.

throwawaysleep··on Three farmers on monopolies and mismanagement in U.S. agriculture
If they did, they would vote to kick it even harder. Farming in America is a giant grift off the taxpayer, from ethanol to tariffs to family farm tax exemptions.
throwawaysleep··on Three farmers on monopolies and mismanagement in U.S. agriculture
Eh, it is more that tech is so cheap that the money saved switching isn’t worth the time spent to retrain the workforce.

There are free alternatives to Microsoft Office, but you would never get your money back using them in a corporate environment, as with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, people come knowing those things.

The cost of software is overwhelmingly not the cash price.

throwawaysleep··on Three farmers on monopolies and mismanagement in U.S. agriculture
Family farming is just a welfare grift at this point.
throwawaysleep··on Axios has better journalistic coverage about the Hyundai ICE raid
You would reasonably conclude after Trump's re-election that the American public overwhelmingly doesn't care, so why bother do it?
