throwawaysleep··on US national debt surges past $39 Trillion
In politics, power is everything. You do not matter without power.
throwawaysleep··on US national debt surges past $39 Trillion
Fiscal conservatism only exists as an ideology when paired with hurting brown people. It does not exist as a meaningful political camp otherwise.

There is a reason that fiscal conservatives spend all their time on food stamps, environmental regulations, and a few random research projects and not even examining any of the top four costs that make up the overwhelming bulk of US spending.

throwawaysleep··on Bill C-22, the Lawful Access Act: Dangerous backdoor surveillance risks remain
Eh, if you see the reaction to Flock Safety, people object to that one as well.
throwawaysleep··on Bill C-22, the Lawful Access Act: Dangerous backdoor surveillance risks remain
Look at what social media considers to be safe countries.

You are absolutely bombarded with messaging about how Dubai and Chinese cities are the safest places in the world. I have friends who live in each who consider North America and Europe crime ridden shitholes because theft is possible to get away with.

If society believes that crimes is utterly rampant despite it collapsing over the past few decades, there is nowhere else to go but mass surveillance to make sure that even the smallest of visible crimes are stamped out.

throwawaysleep··on Willingness to look stupid
Efficiency, metrics, and willingness to look stupid works when nobody has much future power over you. If you can just refresh to a new pool, that is fine but if it is the same pool, it has consequences.

I was on an interview panel for a role and a guy lost out on the role because about 18 months prior, he had asked too many questions one time and because of that the PM thought he struggled to grasp concepts.

One meeting did in his promo.

throwawaysleep··on Most of the US economy is in a recession
We burn 80% of the oil we take out of the ground. Oil production could drop 80% and we would not have to change anything other than demand for burning it.
throwawaysleep··on Most of the US economy is in a recession
About 80% of oil is burned in some way for fuel.
throwawaysleep··on Strike on girls' school that killed 150 in Iran 'likely' carried out by US
Learning from the Israelis it seems.
throwawaysleep··on Ask HN: Would you use a job board where every listing is verified?
They applied for the job, so there’s at least some signal that they’d be willing to work there.
throwawaysleep··on Ask HN: Would you use a job board where every listing is verified?
Keep raising the bar until all but 20 are excluded.
throwawaysleep··on Ask HN: Would you use a job board where every listing is verified?
But if that is the standard, what is the point of the mid level developer in the first place? I have a tool to turn well defined requirements into code and it is $20-200 a month.
throwawaysleep··on US economy sheds 92,000 jobs in February in sharp slide
It is a historical range of working age, so it includes people who are 16 and over and everyone until the die of old age.
throwawaysleep··on Why New Zealand is seeing an exodus of over-30s
A lot of it is that people get far more angry at price gouging than a shortage.
throwawaysleep··on Workers who love ‘synergizing paradigms’ might be bad at their jobs
> Imagine if I said "People who skip breakfast are worse at their jobs". Its so vague, its always true.

As long as you can define some measure of "worse at their jobs", which corporations routinely do, this seems like an easy thing to falsify.

Go get employee eval scores and poll everyone on whether they eat breakfast.

throwawaysleep··on Global warming has accelerated significantly
None of that would matter. Farmers are going bankrupt and losing family land and yet...

There are a certain number of people who just cannot change. There are large numbers of diabetics who die despite an enormous number of warnings.

throwawaysleep··on Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025)
Fine. Median American. 2 out of 3 Americans either endorsed this explicitly or were ok with it.
throwawaysleep··on Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025)
Trump represents the average American. That part is not changing and that problem is not going away. Joe Average said "Yes! [current mess] is what I want."
throwawaysleep··on IDF killed Gaza aid workers at point blank range in 2025 massacre: Report
We have the loosest definition of "journalist" in history. Most of the journalists on the list worked for nobody in particular or for Hamas, Iran, the Palestinian Authority, or some other group like Hezbollah. By these standards, William Joyce would be a journalist.
throwawaysleep··on AI-generated replies are a scourge these days
Eh, I am kind of liking the pasting back and forth of replies or Git comments. It means that they can indulge their little whims and fussiness about variable names or whether something is an edge case and I don't need to build in delays to frustrate them to go away.

AI in the middle makes colleagues more tolerable if you didn't really get along with them well originally.

throwawaysleep··on U.S. Cannot Legally Impose Tariffs Using Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974
> Section 122 does not define the phrase “fundamental international payments problems.”

This seems like the gaping hole that this will be driven through.

throwawaysleep··on Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court
Trump has a long record of stealing from Joe Average and had been doing it since between 2016. Joe Average thinks he’s clever for doing it.
throwawaysleep··on AI adoption and Solow's productivity paradox
Eh, try using Microsoft Copilot in Word or PowerPoint. It is worthless. If your experience with AI was a Microsoft product, you would think it was a scam too.
throwawaysleep··on AI adoption and Solow's productivity paradox
Or give them a stick with twine and a plastic fork as a hook, as is the case with Copilot.
throwawaysleep··on Musk's AI chatbot Grok gains US market share amid sexualized images backlash
People like being able to undress people they know. Grok is the perfect AI for everything porn that everyone else bans.
throwawaysleep··on AI Doesn't Reduce Work–It Intensifies It
> If AI was so good at reducing work, why is it every company engaging with AI has their workload increase.

Throughout human history, we have chosen more work over keeping output stable.

throwawaysleep··on Ask HN: AI never gets flustered, will that make us better as people or worse?
I lean towards the latter.

I am personally much less tolerant of human personality differences because LLMs mean that if the other person is mostly providing additional capacity, I no longer need the other person.

At one of my jobs, nobody wants to bother onboarding the new people as LLMs make it easier to just do their work rather than deal with a confused new person.

throwawaysleep··on QuitGPT – OpenAI Execs Are Trump's Biggest Donors
Eh, throw it out anyway. Dems need to learn that if it is not a Democratic baby, it should not get support.
throwawaysleep··on Claude in PowerPoint
It should be deeply embarrassing to Microsoft that this is superior to Copilot.
throwawaysleep··on QuitGPT – OpenAI Execs Are Trump's Biggest Donors
What I don't understand is why the Democrats don't just come out hard against AI at this point. It is unpopular and the tech titans are openly Republicans.
