throwawaymobule··on Google unkills JPEG XL?
Compared to an average jpeg encoder, or something like mozjpeg?
throwawaymobule··on Git 3.0 will use main as the default branch
I did this the first time git asked me, because getting asked every time would get annoying.

Glad it's going back to having a default and not asking.

throwawaymobule··on McMaster Carr – The Smartest Website You Haven't Heard Of (2022)
This makes great business sense, since you can fit-test any part and know you're getting the right one before ordering.

IIRC, there's even plugins for some CAD programs to grab models by part number.

throwawaymobule··on Show HN: Gitlogue – A terminal tool that replays your Git commits with animation
Would work nicely as one of the tools called by the hollywood program.

If you want a wireless network without a password on it, you're in trouble too.

Pretty sure most modern computers can generate random data faster than they can write to a disc.

A lot of refrigerants have a very high gwp.

Is there an explicit carveout? The GDPR has been used against governments.
throwawaymobule··on AI systems with 'unacceptable risk' are now banned in the EU
Oncehub removed tracking cookies from some of their meeting invite pages in the EU and stopped showing a banner, because they thought it looked offputting.

They got a few support tickets from people who thought they were still tracking, but just removed the banner.

You can still move fast and break things, just treat PII like explosive radioactive waste while you're doing it.
throwawaymobule··on Frustrated YouTube viewers seek explanation for hour-long unskippable ads
The youtube logo changes to 'PREMIUM' if you're using it. It's kind of hard to miss.
throwawaymobule··on Protecting your time from predators in large tech companies
Cool solution to the Claud Shannon problem.
throwawaymobule··on Ask HN: Why buy domains and 301 redirect them to me?
Isn't there a https upgrade header specifically for this kind of thing?
throwawaymobule··on A phishing attack involving g.co, Google's URL shortener
Rocket science is surprisingly straightforward, it's rocket engineering that's the tricky one.
throwawaymobule··on A phishing attack involving g.co, Google's URL shortener
I have an entirely seperate phone and SIM for any service I think is important which demands a phone number. (prepay, I top it up by €5 every few months. Sadly I can't automate that)

I generally refuse to give any number if I can help it. I can count on one hand the number of unsolicited calls/texts I've gotten.

throwawaymobule··on What are these bumps on the top of a pull-tab can?
No you don't. There are losses from inefficiency at every step.
throwawaymobule··on Introducing Ads in Threads
You shouldn't use multiple adblockers. They tend to interfere with eachother in unexpected ways.
throwawaymobule··on Minecraft with object impermanence
Flicking the camera down to despawn cars is a common trick in speedrunning those 3d GTA games. They did it better than cyberpunk, but it was not figured out.
throwawaymobule··on Minecraft with object impermanence
You have to put the credits somewhere, and that's a good place to put them.
throwawaymobule··on Tip pressure might work in the moment, but customers are less likely to return
Even if it only impacted the price shown in store, it would be a huge improvement.
throwawaymobule··on Blizzard's pulling of Warcraft I and II tests GOG's new Preservation Program
All of gog's offline installers are signed and do a hash check on any external .bin files they ship with.

The impact they've had on bundled malware in pirated copies of their games can not be overstated.

throwawaymobule··on Netflix Europe offices raided in tax fraud probe
Even if you do it before you could have known you were being served a warrant?

IIRC, they did it in the US too.

throwawaymobule··on Airlines required to refund passengers for canceled, delayed flights
Ryanair don't sell return tickets, they sell you two 'one way' tickets, last I checked.

Don't know if that legally exempts them from refunding both if they had to refund one.

throwawaymobule··on Garry's Mod faces deluge of Nintendo-related DMCA takedown notices
I think it's only Nintendo that'd be able to go after someone sending claims in their name.

It'd likely be hard to find whoever sent a false notice on general, since there's no identity or address verification needed to send one.

throwawaymobule··on Xmas.c (1988)
I'm sure a few compiler maintainers take pride in making sure certain 'famous' code snippets still compile as time goes on.
throwawaymobule··on GitHub: Can no longer search code without being logged in
I thought damn near every ISP blocks port 25 outgoing. I even had to open a ticket to get it unblocked on a vps I use.

probably for the best.

throwawaymobule··on Making it clear when we're on a call with you to protect you from fraud
