Inaccurate in my opinion. Let's say you eat 2500 calories a day usually. But you want to lose weight so you reduce it to 1800.

Except your calories are from pop tarts.

If you ate 100 calories of pop tarts every hour you're awake for total of 1800 calories... At the end of the month you'd be fatter.

If you ate 1800 calories of pop tarts once a day in 1 hour, you might maintain weight or loose a little. Maybe.

If you had 3600 calories of pop tarts in a few hour window, and then didn't eat again for 48 hours, you'd lose weight in a month.

Insulin control is 99% of losing weight. Yes thermodynamic blah blah, but unless you pay attention to hormone control that controls metabolism in general, it's not going to work without insane willpower to keep your 'calories out' higher than your body wants.

If you repeated the 3600 calories every 48 hours with beef instead, you'd lose weight like never before.

You can be gluttonous and still thin. I eat 2 lbs of ground beef a day, with tons of cheese on it. For breakfast I have 6-8 eggs, with cheese. I have my morning coffee with heavy whipping cream. For desert, I whip up some of the heaving whipping cream and have it with frozen berries thawed out. It drives gfs nuts but they're too anti fat to try it.

I helped my dad lose 50 lbs by finally, after 10 years, getting him to give up bread, sugar, potatoes. It took buying him 2 months of a bluetooth glucose monitor. Once he saw what certain foods do, he believed me finally. At 65 years old, healthier than I remember since he was 40 and I was a teen. It doesn't require some weird injection.
throwawaylaptop··on What'll happen if we spend nearly $3T on data centres no one needs?
I have almost never had an LLM not do the task I wanted. Either I'm asking it very easy things (not really, you definitely couldnt Google the entire task of what I wanted, although obviously each tiny subsection you could), or it's important to scope what you're asking for well.

But as a general statement, you cant just Google a comprehensive summary about beta glucans from chanterelle mushrooms, dosages, cooking methods, immune benefits and processes and get a 10 minute read about exactly what you asked for. But with Gemini deep research you can.

throwawaylaptop··on What'll happen if we spend nearly $3T on data centres no one needs?
I have used both free and paid Google Gemini. I'm as cheap as can be. Im back to the free because it's good enough, and presumably getting better.

If they took away the free, I'd pay $20 and be thankful they kept it at $20.

I love doing things myself.. I mow my lawn, change my oil, change my water heater, and try to never use frameworks or libraries. But not using LLMs seems insane. If they weren't free, you wouldn't use them?

Who wouldnt deploy AI to help with engineering? The question is, will it help so much that you need fewer engineers, or will you simply be ecstatic that your engineers are now a little or a lot more productive. If you have x engineers, and your competitor has the same x number of engineers.. and you both start using AI, are you going to layoff half your engineers when your competitor doesn't? Unless your cash strapped and also don't have any plans for new development, I suppose yes. But otherwise, it's just another thing you need.

Based on your example, basically any answer would be "I don't know 100%".

You could ask me as a human basically any question, and I'd have answers for most things I have experience with.

But if you held a gun to head and said "are you sure???" I'd obviously answer "well damn, no I'm not THAT sure".

The anti cancer diet absolutely works if you want to reduce the odds of getting cancer. It probably even works to slow cancer compared to the average American diet. Will it stop and reverse a cancer? Probably not.

Cost per benefit? My friend is a commercial property guy and sometimes has to bring properties up to date for handicapped access.

He jokes that with how few handicapped people use the features, he could probably give people $1k each as an apology for not being able to go into the building and be far ahead.

I started thinking that for the most part most handicapped people would even take that deal. I think I would.

Should we mandate that all school children take this? Maybe make it a requirement for employment? I'm sure there's negative side effects, but all vaccines and drugs have that.

If we did, we could end a lot of suffering in a decade or two for many at risk people.

If I lend you my car, and you park in Berkeley leaving your laptop open on the passenger seat... Yes it's your fault my window got smashed and I'd like you to pay for it. Is it your fault your laptop got stolen? Maybe, that's just semantics. But my window being broken is your fault because we all know thieves exist and look for items on seats.

So if you upload your id to a flash in the pan website, who's fault is it when the rookie website turns out to have expectedly low security?

California car dealerships are sometimes visited by the DMV inspector, an actual officer of some kind technically.

If they find any driver license photo copies, even turned over inside an unlocked desk drawer, the fine to a dealership is $10k per occurrence.

I'm a self taught PHP/jQuery/bootstrap guy with a small saas. I handle page scroll position by literally saving it into some session data cookie and when you go back I check where your scroll was and I fix it for you. I'm not a genius or skilled... But I cared so I did it.

Another thing you can do is one day of regular calories, and one day of zero. You still average to 1200 a day, but I think it's better for you for several reasons you can look into if interested.

That's news to me. People are selling counterfeit everything on Amazon left and right, but somehow the people selling no name remote controlled relays are making sure they deliver a quality product. Interesting.

That was basically my point. For some reason commenting on positive traits is totally acceptable. But God forbid someone comments on a negative statistical trait, you're a racist.
throwawaylaptop··on US companies, consumers are paying for tariffs, not foreign firms
If an American screw driver is $10, and a Chinese one was $5, I bought Chinese.

If you tariff the Chinese one to $8, I will buy American.

China knows this, so they change the price on their screw driver (that actually costs them 0.75) accordingly, so that it can still be sold for $5, because they know there's a ceiling on what people will pay.

China doesn't have pure competition. The price of their goods isnt really related to cost by it more of what the buyer will pay.

I'm Polish and when I mentioned it I always get commentary about how smart or hard working Polish people are, and usually mention of some mathematician or programmer they knew at some point. And it makes me laugh because if you notice that Polish people are smart or hard working, why don't you give me a quick rundown of who you think is lazy and dumb? Ohhh, that's racist.
throwawaylaptop··on EU commissioner shocked by dangers of some goods sold by Shein and Temu
You misunderstood my point. Why do you actually think there are better quality components for $12 on Amazon than $4 on Temu? There's no accountability on Amazon either, so why would they care at all either and give you better stuff? Just to be generous?
throwawaylaptop··on EU commissioner shocked by dangers of some goods sold by Shein and Temu
Millions of those 'counterfeit' components are sold inside millions of Amazon products every month to US households. Don't go warning me, I at least have a clue of what I'm doing and what to watch out for. Go warn every neighbor you have buying $20 junk on Amazon that includes the components I'm using for a specific small hobby task.

I got what I ordered. A cheap remote controlled relay. That works. Do I expect it to be waterproof? No. Do I expect it to handle it's max rated load? Maybe, I'd check how hot it was after 10 minutes.

Do I trust it to work safely in my use case? Yes.

Other than people that buy from actual specialty stores, that's basically how buying anything works these days. You use your best judgement and continue on.

I've been shopping at Costco/price club since 1989. I've very rarely been led astray, and when I have their amazing return policy has more than made up for it.

Costco was just an example of curation. But yes, it's more of "good value on acceptable quality" not high quality itself.

Also, idk what marketing Costco does. They earned their reputation with me.

throwawaylaptop··on Work Life balance slows careers
There is also something to be said for getting a running start. I started in car sales because I mostly wasted my mechanical engineering degree. I worked 2 years straight, only taking two days off a year because they closed the building for Thanksgiving and Christmas day. I became top 0.1% nationwide basically within 9 months. I made enough to pay off my house at 28 years old. I had an amazing reputation and executives of the public corporation I worked for would come talk to me when they were in town. Being that good so quickly (the few people ahead of me in the United States had been selling for a decade plus and operating off repeat customers, so by some metrics I was easily #1 in the United States), gives you many advantages that come from recognition and reputation. Would I do that at 40+ with kids? No. But I also wouldn't need to if I had done it as described from 24-30 years old.
throwawaylaptop··on EU commissioner shocked by dangers of some goods sold by Shein and Temu
You can rely on reputation when the store has a reputation for decent curation. I didn't say just buy a more expensive thing on Amazon. I said go to a better store. Costco has Chinese stuff everywhere, but I trust Costco to pick decent stuff.
