throwawaylaptop··on Show HN: Building a web search engine from scratch with 3B neural embeddings
I'm currently trying to get a friends small business website to rank. I have a decent understanding of SEO, doing more technically correct things and did a decent amount of hand written content specific to local areas and services provided.

Two months in, bing still hasn't crawled the fav icon. Google finally did after a month. I'm still getting outranked by tangentially related services, garbage national lead collection sites, yelp top 10 blog spam, and even exact service providers from 300 miles away that definitely don't serve the area.

Something is definitely wrong with pagerank and crawling in general.

throwawaylaptop··on Trump Orders National Guard to Washington and Takeover of Capital’s Police
The capital of a country, especially one in a special status like Washington DC, should be a shinning star of perfection, nit in the top 20 hell holes you'd never want to be caught dead in at midnight alone.

Ya man, my father (a grandfather) moved here from Poland, not speaking the language with $200, bought a house within 3 years in California, had a successful career in construction management building amazing buildings you might currently be sitting in.... How could he ever figure out Outlook, that takes real concentration and determination reserved only for no name state school cs grads under 40!

In my medium size CA town, the Burger King just flat out closed. Other than long johns silver in the 1990s, I've never seen a major franchise just quit and close.
throwawaylaptop··on Stanford to continue legacy admissions and withdraw from Cal Grants
I've had 20 years to think about this, and while it was always fun to get the positive vibes telling people I went to Cal, I still think UC Davis or SLO would have been better.

It's not like my only other option was to go to CSU East Bay, although I know people that built decent careers from there too to be honest.

throwawaylaptop··on Stanford to continue legacy admissions and withdraw from Cal Grants
I was #3 in highschool out of a 550 graduating class. I thought I was bright.

Went to Cal for mechanical engineering, and while I survived the engineering classes, the physics classes wore me out and the math classes were almost impossible for me. I barely made it out of there.

I honestly wish I went somewhere easier so that it wasn't a constant struggle to keep up and survive. I think I would have actually learned more.

Staying not depressed, active, and social is probably HUGE in terms of long lifespan.

Someone that walked on the moon is probably feeling pretty dang good for a long time about themselves. And people want to talk to them.

Someone that flew but didn't probably doesn't have that same advantage.

I'm 6'4", 205. It's probably closer to 3000 calories. But then I also skip meals other than dinner when I'm super busy, which probably averages me out lower. It's a lot easier to skip meals when your body is used to burning fat for energy instead of carbs.
throwawaylaptop··on Ask HN: What do you dislike about ChatGPT and what needs improving?
In google Gemini, I gave it my database structure and had it code things. Great. I later added to it. I asked it to do things based on that added columns basically, but never told it their names.

It just guessed. But didn't tell me it had no idea what columns and where I was really talking about. So not only did it guess, wrongly, but it didn't even mention that it had to do so. Obviously the code failed.

Why can't it tell me there's a problem with what I'm asking???

I know a guy that has had meat only for 3 years now. Most fit guy I know.

My father and I have avoided carbs for a few years now. Can do home renovations, gardening, dirt bike riding, and hikes better than we ever did eating carbs. Unless you're doing long distance hikes/running/hard core sports, I really don't think that's true.

Believe me, cutting out bread and sugar completely is 10x easier than some kind of lifelong moderation for a person that has struggled for it already for most of his life.

And he is extremely happy with his new sugar and bread free life of increased mobility, less pain, and much lower blood pressure. At 64, he's learning how to ride a dirtbike and doing pretty well at it.

throwawaylaptop··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
Yes, if you don't need it because there is a natural method that starts fixing your problem in the first week (like cutting all carbs does for being fat), then injecting insulin for your easily fixable problem would also be up there with injecting weird stuff into yourself.

I agree of course. Only note is when I say coffee with heavy cream, I mean like half a cup of it into espresso to make a cream latte.

And over a cup whipped for desert.

But I'm also 6'4".

When I ate the standard American diet I was about 40 lbs heavier than I am now.

Lol, a glucose monitor is a bionic arm implant (for $200 total), and an injection disrupting your entire hormone system is what then?

I've been on here for 10+ years I think at this point. New throwaway, named throwaway to not even lie, every few months. I tweet with Paul G every now and then positively, because I'm nicer on there. But sorry you dont think I provide value.
throwawaylaptop··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
Two weird assumptions here...1, that massive amounts of constant blood sugar/insulin don't affect metabolism.

2, that in the face of crazy long term insulin/hormone disruption, people will continue to be just as active as if they had a sane diet of mostly meat and vegetables.

I'm starting to see why everyone is so unhealthy.

Ever since covid, I playfully ask people if they can guess why a lot of COVID non believers stocked up on toilet paper and food at the beginning of the lockdown.

Of course many say "they somehow thought it wouldn't be available later stupidly!" But I look past that one, and ask for possibly other reasons.

I have asked probably 100 people at this point.

Not a SINGLE person has said "in case they were wrong about the virus, and it was actually dangerous, they wouldn't want to leave their house to go get stuff"

That was the reason my family bought. And some of my anti COVID friends. And no one has guessed that. And they almost can't believe it or understand it.

And this is coming from people who took the virus seriously, but apparently didn't think ahead to not have to leave their house for basic dry goods?

throwawaylaptop··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
Well then luckily that shows you hopefully how bad studies are. Because I assume that you agree that eating 100 calories of Pop-Tarts per hour for 18 hours for 30 days, would give you a different result than eating 3 days worth of Pop-Tarts in a few hours once every 3 days for a month.

To not understand that would mean that while believing some studies, you completely ignore all the studies that have been done on insulin and weight gain.

It's insane to me that people keep talking about the energy in part. Forget that.

Realize that WHAT you put in can change what energy out is.

If I gave you 1800 calories of vodka at 8am, would your use the same amount of energy during the day, and even make it to your 7pm gym? No.

Ok, well sugar isnt exactly the same obviously, but it can also affect what you do that day, how your body acts, your brain even.

Your energy out gets totally messed with after you have tons of alcohol for obvious reasons. Something similar happens on sugar/spiked insulin levels. Can you willpower through it and increase your energy out by running til you drop dead and lose weight? Sure. But it's not easy.

What's way easier is not having the insulin spike in the first place.

I asked a question.... If someone gets something wrong by 10x... They suck, because they have allowed a bad process to be implemented.

Should someone be fired for basically putting out a useless metric? IMO, yes. And "well, we've always done it like this" isn't justification.

Heroine would also help them lose weight also. Maybe cocaine too, but I'm not sure. So it's not "all that matters".

What matters is, are the negative side effects and long term consequences better for you than the alternatives. One of them is "remaining fat". The other is "doing what other people have proven works.. cut all carbs".

throwawaylaptop··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
Billions of people were not overweight when they ate those things. They did not eat them 3+ times a day.

I said in my other posts.. if someone needs help maintaining or gaining weight, eat those things.

If you are overweight, you should be eating ZERO of them.

"Basically killing them" means whatever the current obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic means.

Does it matter who it is specifically? And does it matter if it's a man or woman?
throwawaylaptop··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
? Insulin is not about management of hunger. I think you got your hormones mixed up.

But yes, meat and vegetables is basically what I'd recommend. Never pasta or bread or sugar unless you need help gaining weight.

throwawaylaptop··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
If you told millions of people that bread, sugar, pasta and bread are basically killing them, and to flat out stop eating them.. you probably would help people lose weight (and save many lives too).

My dad has finally understood that grains are for people that need help maintain weight or gaining weight.

No fat person should ever be eating them.

Are you saying raising your insulin levels hourly, 18 times a day, will not do anything to your metabolism? Did you even read my post, or did you just instantly reply with the same pedantic reply which my post was specifically meant to address?
throwawaylaptop··on What'll happen if we spend nearly $3T on data centres no one needs?
I've done this too and sure it's not perfect. But it's better than the average person in my industry. So, 1, that means a decent chunk of my industry could use it and be about as good as they are now.

2, unless I magically have a plan for talking to an expert in HVAC repair, and not just an idiot in HVAC, I can diagnose my HVAC unit with AI just fine. And I did. And no it wasn't as simple as "well duh, every post online says it's the large capacitor".
