throwaway_374··on How a French scholar was treated at US airport
To dial up the reality for a second, we've not seen this kind of animosity towards foreign cultures before Trump took office.
throwaway_374··on “I was just asked to balance a Binary Search Tree by JFK's airport immigration”
What is the point of CBP? Can't their jobs just be automated away by immigration kiosks? Surely there's no human value they actually add. What even is the effectiveness of these routine "randomly selected" checks beyond sniffer dogs for cocaine mules.
throwaway_374··on Prophet: forecasting at scale
If the model is autoregressive you can only forecast N steps ahead. Any further forecasting will be based on these generated near-future forecasts. In English, no. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ-O3hk1vRw#t=01h16m
throwaway_374··on Robert Mercer: the big data billionaire waging war on mainstream media
Oh it's absolutely fair when there are calls for genocide against an entire people. Do you really want me to perform a statistical analysis on Breitbart comments with the word "muslim" or "black" or "jew"? Come on now, don't insult my intelligence - we're all smart people here.
throwaway_374··on Robert Mercer: the big data billionaire waging war on mainstream media
I think the issue is exploitation to stoke hatred against minorities and women. Have you ever read the comments section on Breitbart? It's the new normalized Stormfront.
throwaway_374··on Log(x) vs. ln(x) – The curse of scientific computing
>>that ln(x) is log(x), and log(x) is log10(x).

Can you clarify what you mean? Are you missing a log_e_(x)?

throwaway_374··on Ask HN: Compression with common binary database
Great in concept until you run into the pigeonhole principle. Such compression schemes are fundamentally flawed and you can spend years wasting time on them until some corner edge case will throw you. Nonetheless, I'd encourage you to satisfy yourself by trying to devise such an elaborate scheme... Pied Piper may have a job opening for you.
throwaway_374··on As a software engineer, what's the best skill to have for the next 5-10 years?
Frankly, interview technique and practice, specifically competitive programming style questions. Entirely pointless and cargo cult but without these skills come a rainy day you will struggle to land a job with the current interview obsession trends.
throwaway_374··on Hoversurf: flying drone-bike
Given the material chemistry constraints on output/capacity/weight will govern any innovation in this field, I'd like to see some out-of-the-box thinking.

For example, "in flight" hot-swapping mid-air of rotor legs with recharged replacements on demand at some rendezvous point. In fact, you could swarm a standby entourage of rotors on your journey which wouldn't be subject to the frame+passenger load. I'm sure there's some optimal creative refilling strategy.

throwaway_374··on Postmodern Error Handling in Python 3.6
That's right, mirroring the built in (3.x) abc collections heirarchy. Which then allows you to do interesting things like delegation based polymorphism by registering with the appropriate metaclass so - just to come back to your parent's point - interrogating the type reveals it to be list-like or dict-like.
throwaway_374··on A textbook case in workplace discrimination
I'm afraid controlled rationality has lost its cause sometime ago. Action and anger are now necessary.
throwaway_374··on Indian killed in Kansas: Hate crimes are rising since Trump assumed office
Yes, that's right, "fakehatecrimes.org" is definitely a lot more credible. You are responsible for spreading a racial hatred agenda undermining the persecution and terrorism experienced by minorities. Show some respect, 2 innocent men have been murdered by a white nationalist terrorist.
throwaway_374··on A textbook case in workplace discrimination
Is this actually real? This is utterly ridiculous. Sounds like a company run by a bunch of privileged entitled amateurs with zero consequences for their actions. This culture needs to be punished severely. Name and shame the director involved.
throwaway_374··on A command line script to remind you to drink water
Clearly we need to close the loop with an IoT wifi linked colour sensor.
throwaway_374··on Python past, present, and future with Guido van Rossum [audio]
>For example: you can't assign the result of an "if" statement. Why? Because it's a SyntaxError, no real reason. There is even an "ifExp" in the language grammar, but that's only for inline ifs.

Do you mean something like a ternary operator? You can certainly do: x='foo' if condition else 'bar'.

In fact you can even do multiple assigments: (x,y) = ('foo1','foo2') if condition else ('foo3', 'foo4')

where 'Foo' may also be a function call.

>I think people feel like it's unpythonic and instead pollute the namespace with singleton classes that only have one method.

There's a few pycon talks on "a single method class should not be a class" but I'd say that's the single responsibility principle at its purest along with the community needing to move to more lightweight structures like namedtuples.

throwaway_374··on Reflecting on one very, very strange year at Uber
To send a message that she is not alone and we are collectively revolting against corporate HR abuse.
throwaway_374··on The Rise of the Professional Airbnb Investor
"Developers buy properties in bad neighborhoods in the hope of improving and renting them, but without profit, where is the incentive to invest?*"

Precisely, there should be no profit incentive. Society doesn't need lazy landlords speculating on gentrification. I don't give a fuck if you're disincentivised to own 8 homes which you can rent out while you holiday in the carribean. Productive societies needs affordable housing for all classes of people. Property is not an asset for speculation or a VC-backed venture return model. Feel free to invest your spare cash in innovation and businesses seeking growth.

throwaway_374··on The Rise of the Professional Airbnb Investor
Sorry, I have a vile hatred of AirBNB. Housing is a basic human right. Call me a dangerous socialist if you like. Can any of its employees rationally convince me it provides economic value to ALL of my city including the lower end of workers as opposed to funneling out profits to multiple owners and HQ?
throwaway_374··on Sleep Debt
Specifically with regards waking up at 3 am and not being able to fall asleep again, the best thing that worked for me was going for a 30-45 minutes walk round 6-8 pm before dinner and crashing on the couch. Also herbal calming remedies are good.
throwaway_374··on Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper (1807)
I see your point but it's entirely academic. How exactly do you think a "muslim ban" would be enforced? Do you actually for a second think there's going to be a registry or a proclamation for POTUS to ban all muslims? This is how it's implemented in practice; you're just splitting hairs to determine the theoretical merits on whether it constitutes a "muslim ban" or not.
throwaway_374··on UCLA banned my book from a free speech event
Onkar Ghate is a senior fellow and chief content officer at the Ayn Rand Institute.

Islam and the War on Terror[edit] ARI has taken many controversial positions with respect to the Muslim world. They hold that the motivation for Islamic terrorism comes from their religiosity, not poverty or a reaction to Western policies.[42] They have urged that the US use overwhelming, retaliatory force to "end states who sponsor terrorism", using whatever means are necessary to end the threat.[43] In his article "Ends States Who Sponsor Terrorism", which was published as a full page ad in The New York Times, Peikoff wrote, "The choice today is mass death in the United States or mass death in the terrorist nations. Our Commander-In-Chief must decide whether it is his duty to save Americans or the governments who conspire to kill them." Although some at ARI initially supported the invasion of Iraq, it has criticized how the Iraq War was handled.[44] Since October 2, 2001, the institute has held that Iran should be the primary target in the war against "Islamic totalitarianism".[43]

============================

Perhaps it does not take a leap of the imagination to see how this calls for mass genocide of nations without any objective discussion regarding terrorism. I never understood why the US considers Iran a terrorist state when Iran are fully vested in fighting against ISIS.

throwaway_374··on International visitors are already turning their back on Trump-era America
I have put off any interest in travelling to America. I see it as a different planet that isn't part of the earth.
throwaway_374··on Ask HN: Junior devs, what frustrates you the most at the recruitment process?
Probably when you're interviewed by some mid-senior manager who isn't capable of writing any code and his sole purpose is to "keep you in line" so tries to assert a bullying authority from the outset.

Extremely typical in big corps. Makes me wonder what purpose they serve other than being glorified messengers between the board and real works.

throwaway_374··on Lumnify – an interesting project that helps you hire the best developers
This is a very welcome and refreshing change to the usual "lets rip off old ACMICPC and Computing Olympiad O(N) dynamic programming problems and sell them off to gullible lazy recruiters". Yes, I'm looking at YOU Codility and a (shamefully YC funded alumnus) Hackerrank.
throwaway_374··on Ask HN: What was the longest period you had to continuously code?
Why do people bother with this like it's some kind of badge of honour just to reward C-level bonuses and pick up a few scraps they'll pitifully throw down to you... it's bizarrely masochistic.
throwaway_374··on Where do I go to learn C++?
As someone who recently returned to C++ after a few years away, start with C++11 which feels like a modern language and dare I say very Pythonic. I'd say you need to grasp the following concepts to get you up and running the quickest:

1. Fundamentals of C++ mainly virtual polymorphism and STL. Make sure you understand the mechanisms (vpointers and vtables) as I'd bet my house almost every C++ interview will cover these. 2. C++ 11 style including memory management. 3. The famous "50 ways" book for good practice such as const and explicit class declaration etc.

Lastly, probably the best Youtube resource I found for learning is the following bitesize 20 min lectures which explain key concepts, though some may be a bit outdated. Watch one over lunch and practice in your IDE at the same time.

throwaway_374··on Tim Cook wants governments to fight fake news, which is “killing people's minds”
Simple. Shut down Breitbart.
throwaway_374··on London’s Lonely Unicorn: Two Frugal Expats and Their Billion-Dollar Startup
Capitalism will eat you alive if you don't stand up for your wages and standard of living. I used to be a naive young graduate grateful for a job with the delusion that I would commit everything to my employer and get treated fairly in return. If your employer is cash rich, you should be reaping the rewards as well, not just quietly taking a pay cheque to enrich the shareholders at disproportionate rate.

This is further compounded by the fact that, as developers, we are terrible at recognising our worth and speaking up. Doesn't help that you are conditioned into an inferiority complex constantly reinforced by a ridiculous interview process.

throwaway_374··on London’s Lonely Unicorn: Two Frugal Expats and Their Billion-Dollar Startup
This kind of commoditization attitude of developers really fucks me off. "Shut up and code and don't complain". Nah, you can fuck right off mate.
throwaway_374··on Ask HN: Can we find out why a specific ad appears in our Facebook feed?
Seconded, you are just selecting for your own bias. Facebook knew you were at a bar. Campari happened to be pushing ads. You noticed the ad and probably disregarded other bar-related ads.
