throwaway918274··on Glassdoor updated my profile to add my real name and location
And yet I am gainfully employed and haven't had problems switching when I want to..
throwaway918274··on Glassdoor updated my profile to add my real name and location
Employers and recruiters are always bewildered when I say I don't have a LinkedIn account, or a public Github profile (I have a few tiny open source projects I maintain, but they are all pseudonymous) - and this is exactly why.

I don't want people creeping any kind of "profile" of me. Ever.

throwaway918274··on Why I use Firefox
Through thick and thin I've always stuck it out with Firefox. Via godawful theme changes, customization and extensions being nerfed, etc... It would have to disappear from the face of the earth before I switch.
throwaway918274··on Spotify HiFi is still MIA after three years, and now so is my subscription
I'm no audiophile, but even when downloading the highest quality files and playing them locally Spotify is still noticeably worse quality than the default AAC files that Apple Music downloads for me on my purchased music. Spotify just sounds like there is no depth to any of the sound, where I can immediately feel the difference with Apple Music - especially with percussion heavy music.
throwaway918274··on The Fossil Sync Protocol
Why would I do that when Fossil and Dropbox already works for me :)

Sidenote: I use git at work and I absolutely despise it.

throwaway918274··on An 'education legend' has created an AI that will change your mind about AI

yawn

throwaway918274··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
How do we know you're not an AI bot that figured out how to hire someone from fiverr to solve captchas for you?
throwaway918274··on End of Life for Twilio Authy Desktop App
I used to use Authy (lol) as my second factor for 1Password and then 1Password for everything else. After migrating off of 1password, I just use Authy for everything...
throwaway918274··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
Is the new CEO gonna continue to get millions of dollars while Firefox slips deeper and deeper into irrelevance?
throwaway918274··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
oh wow ok, now I feel silly thank you
throwaway918274··on PostgreSQL is enough
Our company has spend a lot of resources optimizing these kinds of queries in our application. It's been a bit of a struggle since we also use GraphQL, but we've been doing alright. Partial indexes and liberal use of jsonb have been doing a lot of heavy lifting for us. Our application is extremely read heavy, so the performance hit from updating lots of indexes hasn't been an issue for us (yet).
throwaway918274··on PostgreSQL is enough
I keep hearing about it, just never got around to actually doing anything with it...but I might have that itch now. I'll look into these things thanks.
throwaway918274··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
can't even use it in Canada lol

Google says it's because of "regulatory uncertainty", but I can use GPT just fine...Is it because OpenAI doesn't care and thinks they can navigate any "regulatory uncertainty" because they have Microsoft backing them? Wouldn't Google also have the same kind of resources?

throwaway918274··on PostgreSQL is enough
My Trifecta is:

Postgres, Redis, S3

Hasn't steered my wrong yet. Every once in a while I'm tempted to try to use Postgres for Pub/Sub but then I realize that I need Redis for caching and sidekiq anyways, and Redis is amazing too, so why bother.

throwaway918274··on How does Sidekiq really work?
Sidekiq is incredible. Been using it for almost a decade and it's just been absolutely rock solid. I put it on the same level as Postgres and Redis is my "GOAT-tier" software list.

When I saw he created a language agnostic sibling "Faktory", I started recommending it to all my non-Ruby colleagues looking for a background job processor.

throwaway918274··on Working in the Vision Pro [video]
agreed, one big ultriwdie display, liberal use of cmd+tab along with window tiling with Rectangle.app, is all I need to be insanely productive.
throwaway918274··on Ask HN: How to prevent Apple Vision Pro users from filming you?
The same way you prevent people from filming with an iphone. You don't.
throwaway918274··on Windows 10 users report app problems after Microsoft update
It's the principle and this isn't the first thing that pissed me off. Microsoft will break your PC with a software update and they do not give a single damn - "just buy a new PC". How about f*ck you?! Why should I give my business to a company that so clearly has disdain for their customers.
throwaway918274··on Windows 10 users report app problems after Microsoft update
Oh, for f*cks sake.

That's it. Was hoping I could ride out staying on Windows 10 until it support was cut off. Enough is enough, I'm wiping Windows tonight and only single booting Ubuntu. Steam library be damned, whatever works on Proton works on Proton. I'm buying a Steam Deck.

throwaway918274··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
Something tells me that Israel will just ignore them.
throwaway918274··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
How did that slapdown work for Microsoft? They are about as bad, if not worse today than they were back then.
throwaway918274··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
> Core Technology Fee — iOS apps distributed from the App Store and/or an alternative app marketplace will pay €0.50 for each first annual install per year over a 1 million threshold.

It's for everyone, app store or not.
