throwaway843··on Tell HN: Online Safety Act to be enforced in the UK on July 25th
VPN use will increase.
throwaway843··on Ask HN: How do you avoid AI slop on YouTube?
Just don't watch YouTube.

Everything became junk when primed for 10-12, or 26-30 minutes - a race to the bottom. AI's a further nail into what YT was.

throwaway843··on July 5, 1687: When Newton explained why you don't float away
The world was very pious then. To have written that paragraph a century earlier may have resulted in ostracizm. To have written it like that was enough given the limited backing that ould be given. It was enough to influence those around and after Newton, it was, in that sense, remarkable.
throwaway843··on Fakespot shuts down today after 9 years of detecting fake product reviews
Dyson always struck me as scammy. All the way back to the 19990s. More proof.
throwaway843··on If macOS is so easy to use, why do I hate using it so much?
MacOS hasn't evolved. It sticks with old paradigms because it's stuck in its ways.

With keyboards, that includes mappings that give RSI and finger strain for the sake of not adding a handful of keys.

For the window manager, that includes non-windowed applications, from a UI perspective never moving on from single application views - just giving an illusion of multiple apps.

Despite the strides NextSTEP brought Apple as an OS, some of which shows through at the command line, the UI and UX just hasn't moved on.

throwaway843··on LibreOffice takes aim at Microsoft Office with free guides to help users switch
REGEX that's incompatible with Office doesn't win users.

> powerful spreadsheet functions like TEXTSPLIT and VSTACK...

...won't matter to almost anyone when you still can't right-click a row and press 'd' on a keyboard to delete that row. Everyday stuff like that matters, not an oblique function.

I still cannot find my way around the semi-ribbon interface, while half the options are still in menus. It seems like pot luck whether or.not the right-clicked 'format' will have the option. Perhaps it's not even 'format'.

Fancy functions to learn don't matter when ChatGPT can string together existing functions to do the job and leave an average-lay-power-user happy. 365. Meanwhile, python's python-XXXx libraries provide a superior UI, a UI that's entirely in my head, than LibreOffice.

throwaway843··on Why email startups fail
You seem to be chatting down some perceived tangental competition in order to chat yourself up. That kind of self-promotion's no good. Especially when picking ethereal "your writing sounds weird" ad homineming a decently detailed, reasonably hard-hitting, article.

Perhaps you don't like the conclusions it draws?

You then put words in others mouths. Then cannot leave the thread alone. You've already been called out by failing to pander some cheap anti-Electron sloganeering to the HN crowd, too.

I suggest, if you're going to talk-up your APP, to do so by focusing on positives. Perhaps read some posts by people that promote successfully, such as patio11.

throwaway843··on AI consciousness is not impossible – but LLMs of today must not be conscious
If they are not conscious, does that make them unconscious? And if so, do they snore?
throwaway843··on If you care about money or power, stay close to AI
If you want an 'in' to money and power, stay close to AI as money and power's been convinced enough to get insecure about it thus chase it with existential money and power.

To be fair, this happened a couple of years ago but continued stoking of the insecurity flames is required.

If, however, you already have an 'in' to money and power, no action needed unless one's ego wants more, is deranged, etc.

throwaway843··on The Birth-Rate Crisis Isn't as Bad as You've Heard–It's Worse
Still, cotton underwear.
throwaway843··on Ask HN: How did low contrast text become so pervasive?
On the one hand, there are lots of articles explaining that #000000 is not true black, and #ffffff is not true white.

On the other, there are lots of articles explaining that black on white will cause readers discomfort so recommend camouflaged light grey on dark grey, or vice versa, as better.

throwaway843··on Tell HN: (dictionary|thesaurus).reference.com is now a spam site
AmigaOS had dictioary.library which AmigaWriter used as could any other app, such as Lemmings.
throwaway843··on Ask HN: Would HN be better if downvoting required justification?
Be more resilient.

HN pussy foots enough. That pussy footing is what causes pent-up voting - its trend followers and "i agree/disagree with this"ers not having the gall to cast first vote.

Justifying this will make it even worse, as a wall of text will be needed before anyone does anything. Then you'll get downvoted by the trend followers citing the wall of text dissenter rather than thinking still.

throwaway843··on Ask HN: Using AI daily but not seeing productivity gains – is it just me?
Everyone's answering about using it for coding and deep knowledge work.

But what about the opposite: all the other stuff that's surface? Today I had it fill out a calendar, to generate test data meeting specs, to do some simple translation, to proof some reading, to search.

If there's a task that can be directed and it takes less time to direct than do, it's a productivity gain.

throwaway843··on I would enjoy an HN chat. Is there one?
Back in the day there was a browser plugin for ICQ that let you chat with anyone else on the same webpage.

That was ~2000. I'm convinced the web has not only gone nowhere but regressed since 2009.

throwaway843··on Ask HN: What newspaper are you paying for these days?
How edge.

As a human construct, prices are also entirely made up. Treating them as a positivist 'given' akin to 'facts' from natural sciences misses the wood for the trees.

throwaway843··on The hamburger-menu icon today: Is it recognizable?
Three bars means... the exact same thing the thousands and thousands of times it's been seen before.

People have no inate understanding of 'menu'. We don't even read short words like that letter by letter, it's read as a block and is far more complex than three bars.

throwaway843··on The hamburger-menu icon today: Is it recognizable?
I'm curious what's cognitively loading about three horizontal bars arranged in a square located in the corner of an app or website.

Screens, somewhat counterintuitively, used to be wider. Because they were not on handheld mobile devices. Then we had the menubar and nested dropdowns, suckerfish, etc. It was an exciting time to see a menu, you were never quite sure what you were going to get - I believe there are positives to learning curves for power users.

But I digress. 三 means 3 in Chinese. It doesn't take cognitive load. Why does a hamburger? I really am curious.

throwaway843··on Why SSL was renamed to TLS in late 90s (2014)
Unfortunately you were voted down for answering OP.

SSL for websies, TLS for email, tunnels, XMPP, etc.

throwaway843··on In Munich, early signs of a European hyperscaler revolt
The irony of their cookie wall.
throwaway843··on The New Coventry Light Rail Is Here [Geoff Marshall, YouTube] [video]
Funded, developed and opened all under Labour and Reeves.
throwaway843··on Frequent reauth doesn't make you more secure
Hash each character.
throwaway843··on The Russian people have essentially lost access to the internet
X-Ray can become your friend, vless, vmess, trojan, etc. It's a pity these VPN-like protocols are largely unknown in the west.

Shadowsocks, including outline, has long been dead.

throwaway843··on Frequent reauth doesn't make you more secure
1234abcd@ it is then for all my accounts.
throwaway843··on London-bound plane carrying over 200 people crashes after take-off in India
Which should make it clear there have been significantly less incidents over the past two years than in the 38 years preceeding.
throwaway843··on London-bound plane carrying over 200 people crashes after take-off in India
That's because you're biased to recall recent thungs.
throwaway843··on What are some unknown apps you cannot live without?
Giant stopwatch: For when you need a giant stopwatch.
throwaway843··on Ask HN: What would you do if AGI were coming in 2-4 years?
The FUD is little more, and in many cases is, one liners that play on insecurity.

There is no case to justify an assumption as true.

How would you judge the impact of 'technology' over the past 20 years? The 20 years before that were pretty revolutionary too, and so were the 20 years prior to that.. and... the 20 years prior... and... Bias comes from the life one's lived.

How to measure the impact, then? Life expectancy? Education? Gender equality? Access to clean air and water? A safe house that the majority of people can afford doing a job they don't hate? All these things that go into Human Development? Of which HDI [1] is but one, of which some have had progress in some countries. But fear mongering, playing on insecurities, that gets investor money for the hope some fraction of wealth can be accumulated by peddlers of such insecurity. You are a useful distraction.

throwaway843··on Ask HN: What would you work on if you couldn't fail?
Ascension。
throwaway843··on Ask HN: What would you do if AGI were coming in 2-4 years?
It's FUD to get investor money.
