People here don't understand basic concepts like risk adjusted returns, flight to quality, Searching for yield etc...

The crisis was 07/08, but the buildup was almost a decade in the making, does that count as short term?
throwaway7ahgb··on Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt's Leaked Stanford Talk
If you think it's easy to game 30M in short term revenue, please try to do that in a large firm.

The risk/compliance teams would be interested in your strategy.

Or, someone steals your car, commits a murder with it and places it right back at the same location in the exact condition.

The police will come after you and you will need to explain. But you still have your car.

New homeowners: Know where your GFCI reset switches are located.

I just had a fun time debugging why some of my outlets weren't working. Turns out there was a GFCI tripped in the garage, a few rooms down from the outlet.

Why haven't you been able to get an offer somewhere else?
throwaway7ahgb··on Employers used return-to-office to make workers quit
You're missing the part where 5% isn't let go at once triggering WARN.

Think of this is as a continuous process of evaluation -> pip -> fire. This means no WARN and no severance.

throwaway7ahgb··on Employers used return-to-office to make workers quit
Paranoia and backstabbing happens everywhere.

What happens if stack rank->pip is too obvious is that people and teams will not cooperate with newer fresh meat. They're incentivized to keep knowledge protected for their job. New people struggle to get above the pip mark and it becomes a revolving door.

100% Agree, We could have $10k electric cars in the US, specifically made in China. It's not going to happen anytime soon for enough reasons that could fill a HN comment section.
throwaway7ahgb··on Employers used return-to-office to make workers quit
I'm FT WFH, my anecdote is that every time I'm on a call, it is the father who is taking care of the kids in the background.

If we're trying to equalize traditional gender roles, how about getting more fathers home to take care of kids?

Better yet, remove gender completely and let WFH stand on it's own, which it clearly does.

throwaway7ahgb··on Employers used return-to-office to make workers quit
About as useless as the original comment.

WFH benefits are apparent on their own for a individual. How WFH affects diversity in a specific company maybe a useful exercise , it doesn't change the benefits much.

throwaway7ahgb··on USPS text scammers duped his wife, so he hacked their operation
To answer your question, No they aren't.

Until the REAL scammers are brought down, people will take actions into their own hands.

Wait until you get to 50 and you have to take OFF your glasses to read things that are small or close.

This is the most annoying part of all my vision problems.

throwaway7ahgb··on Tracking supermarket prices with Playwright
Age is important factor here, not just contract brands.

As you get older, your eyes get dryer. Also, having done Lasik and needing contacts after many years is a recipe for dry eyes.

throwaway7ahgb··on Tracking supermarket prices with Playwright
Costco does this for sure, but Costco also creates their own products. For instance there are some variations of a package set that can only be bought at Costco, so you aren't getting the exact same box and items as anywhere else.
throwaway7ahgb··on Jeremy Rowley resigns from DigiCert due to mass-revocation incident
If you publish a cert for your product and require (for whatever reason) all 3rd parties validate the cert before using it, you're going to have a very bad time here. It could cost you contracts.

Now, this could be the fault digicert's customers, but suing to block revocation would be logical.

throwaway7ahgb··on Jeremy Rowley resigns from DigiCert due to mass-revocation incident
Agreed here, and how can you thoroughly investigate without engineering involved? Unless you suspect your own team somehow it doesn't make sense.

throwaway7ahgb··on Children should be allowed to get bored (2013)
I agree, however why is that small issues are so large when trying to sleep at night? A little thought we can reflect on becomes a big problem late at night while trying to sleep.
throwaway7ahgb··on Every company should be owned by its employees
Agreed, COOPs don't fundamentally change human behavior which has doses of greed. A large COOP monopoly will suffer the same fate as others'.
throwaway7ahgb··on Every company should be owned by its employees
The OP is postulating they would look different but not better. Nobody has refuted the claim that if COOPs were better they would be more popular , but they are not.

Uplifting the entire global financial system to make a COOP more attractive through regulation wouldn't change this.

throwaway7ahgb··on Every company should be owned by its employees
>All companies have to do is present a united front on keeping pay low and benefits nonexistent to prevent workers from having better options. I.e. USA 2024.

Can we leave the cynical antiwork comments out? They aren't helpful. This is obviously not the case for a majority of companies and anecdotes don't help.

Everyone is for the highest pay possible until they run their own company and have to provide payroll.

throwaway7ahgb··on Every company should be owned by its employees
Capital markets has mostly two* components : Stocks and Bonds

Investors don't need to own part of a company to buy a Bond, they just want to see good credit rating and yield.

*VC is also part of capital markets but mostly private and such a small % of global investment.

throwaway7ahgb··on Switzerland Makes Open Source Software Mandatory for Public Sector
Isn't the Linux/GNU philosophy "Use the best tool for the job". Making OSS always a choice is good, but it is definitely not always the best tool for the job.

No thank you. Use existing laws that cover wide nets and actually enforce them.

Same here, Groups + Marketplace is actually a wealth of information. There are still a few dark patterns but most manageable for a "free" platform.

OPs comments read like we're describing something the SS built (Godwin says hi).
