throwaway613745··on Salesforce regrets firing 4000 experienced staff and replacing them with AI
Customer experience is secondary to making the C-suite more money.
throwaway613745··on Ruby 4.0.0
DHH also doesn’t like typing in Ruby at all, and Rails is designed around what he likes.
throwaway613745··on The post-GeForce era: What if Nvidia abandons PC gaming?
Of course they would have milked us that’s why I want Nvidia to stick around, to keep AMD in check.

Ghost of Tsushima already is a PS4 game???
throwaway613745··on The post-GeForce era: What if Nvidia abandons PC gaming?
Steam isn’t a good metric because they sell the game on Battle.Net.

CoD is also huge on Playstation.

throwaway613745··on The post-GeForce era: What if Nvidia abandons PC gaming?
It’s only one of if not the best selling game every year.

Totally niche appeal, yeah right.

throwaway613745··on The post-GeForce era: What if Nvidia abandons PC gaming?
I’ve always been an AMD customer because I’ve despised Nvidia’s business practices for 10+ years.

It would still suck if they left the market because who does AMD have to compete with with? Intel? LOL

Increased prices for everyone. Lovely. I can’t despise AI enough.

throwaway613745··on Vince Zampella, developer of Call of Duty and Battlefield has died
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is probably my second favorite FPS game after Doom 2. Nothing has ever really hit me since like the nuke scene did. The set-pieces in Modern Warfare and MW2 are some of the best single-player FPS gaming I’ve ever experienced.

RIP Vince

> what would previously have been a manga

Completely out of touch to downplay the entire manga industry as "skill issue".

Akira Toriyama totally created Dragonball as a manga because he was just wasn't good enough to make an animated movie!

Berserk is a book because Kentaro Miura just had skill issue!

Only imagine if Tolkien wanted to create the Lord of the Rings if he had AI!

As if a medium only artistic merit because sufficiently advanced technology just didn't exist yet. groooaaaaan

> Every time we automate something the luddites cry out about the coming mass unemployment. It has never happened.

It has happened every single time.

throwaway613745··on I can't upgrade to Windows 11, now leave me alone
Ultimately, I didn't switch to Linux because I wanted to. I switched to Linux because Microsoft became so actively hostile to me I felt like I didn't have any other choice.

No Microsoft, I'm not buying new hardware just to get the new OS. No, I'm not going to let you nag me every single day until I get pissed off enough to. No, I will not tolerate all the little things in your OS that piss me off everyday. Your software sucks. Your filesystem sucks. Your constant nagging sucks. I don't want your cloud TPM security bullshit and I DEFINITELY don't want Copilot or Recall.

Seriously Microsoft: fuck you.

Giving up being able to play certain games - which require me to install malware into my computer anyway - is a small price to pay to have my sanity and freedom back. I own my computer, not you. Goodbye and good riddance.

I already used MacOS and Linux for work anyway. But don't worry Apple, you're riding that line pretty dangerously too - you're gonna be next on the chopping block if you don't get your act together. Framework Desktop is looking like a mighty capable replacement for my Mac Studio.

throwaway613745··on Measuring AI Ability to Complete Long Tasks
> Worked examples are step-by-step illustrations of the process required to complete a task or solve a problem.

That’s not what having a bot generate your integration is and reading it post-facto is. The bot isn’t guiding you through the process so you can go do it yourself. At best you would use this as a reference to go do another integration yourself - but at this point why even bother when you can just get the bot to do it again?

The only thing people learn using AI is how to do things with AI.

throwaway613745··on Mozilla right now (Digital Painting)
A browser user agent is a string of text that a web browser sends to a web server to identify itself and provide information about the browser's capabilities, such as its type, version, and the operating system it runs on.

This has nothing to do with what an AI “agent” is.

throwaway613745··on Measuring AI Ability to Complete Long Tasks
The topic is basically irrelevant. I could just edit my post to change the two instances of "vector database" to "vector database integration" and nothing else would change about my point.

I could change the post to be about learning word-working by watching a robot build a shelf and nothing would change.

throwaway613745··on Measuring AI Ability to Complete Long Tasks
Just speaking from personal experience but the struggle is what creates the learning.

I learned refactoring patterns from Fowler's book. But when I tried to actually use them I still struggled. I didn't fully understand how the patterns worked until I actually tried (and failed) to use them a few times.

You don't really internalize things until you understand what doesn't work just as much as what does. You don't learn nearly as much from success as you do from failure. I would say the ratio of truly internalized knowledge is much higher for failure.

The notion that you can get a bot to just vomit out a vector database and then you can just "read the code" and you'll understand how a vector database works is just ludicrous.

Blanket ban on AI generated assets, but nobody cares about AI generated code apparently. lol
throwaway613745··on I wrote a code editor in C and now I'm a changed man
Terry is what happens when extremely intelligent people don’t get the help they need.

He was abandoned by his family and society and became the play thing for internet trolls.

His life was a tragedy in every sense.

As someone who also has a young family member who’s potential was also utterly destroyed by schizophrenia, Terry’s story fills me with immense sadness.

"it's more efficient if you ignore the part where it's not"
throwaway613745··on Ask HN: How are you LLM-coding in an established code base?
I use it to write tests (usually integration) that make me physically cringe when I think about how dogged complicated they are to write.

I'll ask it to write one-off scripts for me, like benchmarks.

If I get stuck in some particular complicated part of the code and even web search is not helpful, I will let the AI take a stab at it in small chunks and review every output meticulously. Sometimes I will just "rubber duck" chat with it to get ideas.

Inline code completion suggestions are completely disabled. Tired of all the made up nonsense these things vomit out. I only interact with an AI via either a desktop app, CLI agent, or the integrated agent in my IDE that I can keep hidden most of the time until I actively decide I want to use it.

We have some "foreign resources" that do some stuff. They are basically a Claude subscription with an 8 hour delay. I hate them. Id' replace them with the Github Copilot built-in agent in a heartbeat if I could.

throwaway613745··on AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D sells for more than 9800X3D, enthusiasts flock to AM4 DDR4
oh ffs, I was just thinking about upgrading my current PC with a new GPU and CPU and just keeping the same 64gb of AM4 DDR4 I already have. But now even the prices for the CPUs are skyrocketting? Eff everything about this and curse Sam Altman.

Constantly Fantasizing? I was responding to a hypothetical based on interpretations of real statements made by the new CEO. It's a public forum for discussion. Firefox is something that is central and essential to my digital life.

I think the only person fantasizing here is you, about what random strangers on discussion forums do all day when not responding directly to topics at hand.

throwaway613745··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
I ran AdGuard Home for a while but it was causing too many problems for everyone else at home so I stopped.

These days I’m using AdGuard on iOS and ublock origin with Firefox on everything else.
