throwaway613745··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
I have used Firefox as my default browser through thick and thin for damn near two decades.

If Mozilla killed andblocking extensions I’d switch to Helium Browser in a heartbeat since they’re maintaining manifest v2 support for uBO and even ship it OOTB.

The web is unusable without a proper Adblock.

throwaway613745··on AI will make formal verification go mainstream
GPT 5.2 can't even tell me how many rs are in garlic.
throwaway613745··on Pricing Changes for GitHub Actions
Use open source software. Buy your own compute. Make the effort. It's worth it.
throwaway613745··on Canada's Carney called out for 'utilizing' British spelling
As an old-stock Canadian (one side of my family settled in Upper Canada in 1782 because of the revolution, so I have very thick British loyalist roots)...I use British spelling. I explicitly reject the use of American English.

This is a nothing burger.

throwaway613745··on Mozilla appoints new CEO Anthony Enzor-Demeo
Mozilla for the love of God I do not want “AI features” in the tool I use to do my online banking. Stop this madness.

Nobody is switching away from Firefox because it’s not agentic.

But there might be a small amount of people willing to switch away from Chromium slop browsers BECAUSE IT ISNT.

Why do you think Waterfox and Librewolf leave this crap out?

throwaway613745··on This is not the future
You're taking the meaning of the word "inevitable" too literally.

Something might be "inevitable" in the sense that someone is going to create it at some point whether we like it or not.

Something is also not "inevitable" in the sense that we will be forced to use it or you will not be able to function in society. <-- this is what the author is talking about

We do not need to tolerate being abused by the elites or use their terrible products because they say so. We can just say no.

throwaway613745··on It seems that OpenAI is scraping [certificate transparency] logs
OpenAI is scraping everything that is publicly accessible. Everything.
throwaway613745··on I'm Kenyan. I don't write like ChatGPT, ChatGPT writes like me
Maybe for writing, but in digital art circles if anyone notices a mistake in your lines or perspective or any kind of technical error you will get the anti-AI cancel mob after you even if you didn’t use generative AI at all.

I would not want to be an artist in the current environment, it’s total chaos.

throwaway613745··on Rust Coreutils 0.5.0 Release: 87.75% compatibility with GNU Coreutils
Not ridiculous at all.

Rust coreutils are MIT licensed.

Canonical sells extended support and security packages.

It’s completely reasonable to think they will want to monetize additional patches on coreutils as part of their commercial offerings.

throwaway613745··on Rust Coreutils 0.5.0 Release: 87.75% compatibility with GNU Coreutils
Because Canonical has completely lost the plot and become infected by Rust zealots.
throwaway613745··on AI agents are starting to eat SaaS
Not for my company. In my research AI is just completely incapable of doing what we do in a cost effective way and our customers don’t have the technical know-how to vibe an alternative.

Our customers ask for about AI features and it’s a constant struggle to explain to them that they just aren’t there yet.

throwaway613745··on Elevated errors across many models
Haiku is fantastic for simple answers and one off tasks. Then I switch to Opus for anything “serious”.

I don’t even bother with Sonnet anymore, it’s been made obsolete by Opus 4.5.

throwaway613745··on Elevated errors across many models
Claude being down is the new XKCD Compiling.
throwaway613745··on GraphQL: The enterprise honeymoon is over
wut

we have a mixed graphql/REST api at $DAY_JOB and our delete mutations look almost identical to our REST DELETE endpoints.

TFA complains needing to define types (lol), but if you're doing REST endpoints you should be writing some kind of API specification for it (swagger?). So ultimately there isn't much of a difference. However, having your types directly on your schema is nicer than just bolting on a fragile openapi spec that will quickly become outdated when a dev forgets to update it when a parameter is added/removed/changed.

throwaway613745··on Rust Coreutils 0.5.0 Release: 87.75% compatibility with GNU Coreutils
If you want 100% compatibility:

sudo apt purge --autoremove --allow-remove-essential coreutils-from-uutils # reinstalls gnu coreutils

sudo update-alternatives --config sudo # can switch back to regular sudo from sudo-rs

(for Ubuntu 25.10)

throwaway613745··on Vacuum Is a Lie: About Your Indexes
Dont' forget to ANALYZE your tables sometimes too.

Just recently was trying to optimize a 12s index scan, turns out I didn't need to change anything about the query I just had to update the table statistics. 12s down to 100ms just form running ANALYZE (no vacuum needed).

throwaway613745··on AI and the ironies of automation – Part 2
If your process is shit, you're just automating shit at lightning speed.

If you're bad at your job, you're automating it at lightning speed.

You need have good business process and be good at your job without AI in order to have any chance in hell of being successful with it. The idea that you can just outsource your thinking to the AI and don't need to actually understand or learn anything new anymore is complete delusion.

throwaway613745··on Using Git add -p for fun (and profit)
It hasn't been an issue in my experience at $DAY_JOB, but for us all commits must pass CI and not just the tip of whatever branch was just pushed. So branches with partial commits that fail CI cannot be merged. So if you commit an incorrect partial commit, you either squash it into a commit that does pass CI (usually the next one forward) or you rebase and edit the failed commit and fix it and force push your branch and run CI on the whole changeset again.
throwaway613745··on 1300 Still Images from the Animated Films of Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli (2023)
One of the best movies I have ever seen and I will never watch it again as long as I live. Emphasis on never.
throwaway613745··on He set out to walk around the world. After 27 years, his quest is nearly over
I have a 6 year old and yeah....this angers me.
throwaway613745··on Training LLMs for honesty via confessions
Lying requires intent by definition. LLMs do not and cannot have intent, so they are incapable of lying. They just produce text. They are software.
throwaway613745··on Octo: A Chip8 IDE
Very cool. Reminds me of the Pico8.

I love these types of vms that have deliberately limited specs. Really makes you sink your teeth into solving problems creatively with minimal resources.

throwaway613745··on Show HN: Local Privacy Firewall-blocks PII and secrets before ChatGPT sees them
You run your agent in a container and you only give it access to agent-specific secrets that can be rotated easily.
throwaway613745··on My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file (2020)
With notepad.exe:

At the first line of the a .txt file put .LOG This will then put a timestamp at the end of the file every time you open it.

Also, if you press the F5 key it inserts a timestamp.

Been using this for years and it's pretty much all I ever needed.

throwaway613745··on Show HN: Local Privacy Firewall-blocks PII and secrets before ChatGPT sees them
Maybe you should fix your logging to not output secrets in plaintext? Every single modern logging utility has this ability.
throwaway613745··on The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI Partner on Sora
Seems @sama has stumbled onto a pretty good business strategy - unleash something that massively infringes on copyright into the world, then take it back and add “guardrails” and then ~~extort~~ sell it back to the person you infringed on their copyright in the first place.

absolutely disgusting behavior

I can't put into words how much I despise @sama, it would probably get me banned from every corner of the internet.

Also... f*ck Disney for falling for this.

throwaway613745··on If you're going to vibe code, why not do it in C?
If you’re going to vibe code, why not do it in Brainfuck?

Claude hilariously refused to rewrite my rails codebase in Brainfuck…not that I really expected it to. But it went on a hilarious tirade about how doing so was a horrible idea and I would probably fired if I did.

throwaway613745··on The Joy of Playing Grandia, on Sega Saturn
I almost always try to play on original hardware on an appropriate display (CRT) whenever I can. The deluge of remasters and remakes we've been getting can be nice - but I find a lot of the time that they can be hit or miss. They often feel like they've lost a lot of the magic created when the developers of the era had to work with the limitations of the hardware of the era. Pixel art on those old CRT's vs pixel art on new games with modern displays is a good example, when working on those old CRTs you just had to create your art in a specific way that just doesn't look good when you slap it onto a modern OLED display. Even the modern pixel art that's designed FOR the new displays just doesn't quite capture the same feel.

I recently played Panzer Dragoon Saga on original Saturn hardware and I have to say that was one of the most profound experiences playing an RPG I've had in my life and playing it on the Saturn itself was a big part of it.

It doesn't help that some of the porting studios sometimes just do shoddy work. Aspyr, for one, can be hit or miss. The Deus Ex remake that's coming out, from what I've seen, is particularly egregious. Just based on the footage I've seen the artistry of the game is completely ruined.

On the flipside - Nightdive doesn't miss. They're the only ones that I will buy their remasters without researching the port quality because they just "get it". The Nightdive remasters of Turok, System Shock, Rise of the Triad, Blood and even some of the more niche ones like Powerslave and Killing time have all been fantastic. Even their full remake of the original System Shock is phenomenal.
