throwaway55479··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
Biden winning the race in 2020 [1] was the most commented post on HN.

I found that yesterday while trying to figure out how popular the "crowdstrike" post was, and it is actually the second most commented one.

> Was there a plan if it went wrong?

It is sad, but Hamas leaders may just regard all this as a worthwhile sacrifice for their greater cause of Palestinian liberation.

> History has shown that Palestinian lives mean nothing to the Arab world.

They do care. They talk about it every day. They sponsor a good part of the aid. Not letting Gazans out is mostly because Israel may not allow them back in again.

I'm not saying palestinians are a priority to the Arab leaders. They are just doing what is safe for themselves. So no wars or economic blockades. Actually, the Houthis and Hezbollah are doing just that, and they are labeled as terrorists for it.

> What the benefit is to Israel to starve 1.1 million people to death. It would be a good way to turn the entire world against them.

The EU foreign policy chief and the UN said it simply: "It is probably used as a weapon of war." If what Israel had already done did not turn the entire world against them, why do you (or why would they) think this will? Because of the horrors of 7/10, Israel now believes it has carte blanche. It was bad before, but now almost all limits are off.

Also today : More than 800 serving officials in the US and Europe have signed a statement warning that their own governments' policies on the Israel-Gaza war could amount to "grave violations of international law [1]

throwaway55479··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
Maybe. However, the situation itself is so special, I'm not sure how you would "generalize it" to others. And there is really nothing esoteric about the deep trauma. It is widely documented.
throwaway55479··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
Yes. That is why I said: faced with larger threats

What I can add is that this is indeed not just a "larger" threat for them. It "activated" a millennium-deep Jewish trauma (through pogroms up to the Holocaust). Deep, very deep.

throwaway55479··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
Israel's tactic has always been deterrence: I will inflict you so much pain that you will think twice before doing this again. Despite being proven wrong, a "realist politician' will automatically think of adding more (and then some) deterrence as the only solution.

I remember 20 years ago, during the first bombing of Gaza, they hit just ONE building and felt pressured enough to apologize for the handful of civilian deaths. Unfortunately, faced with larger threats (real or imaginary) and weak international pressure, Israel has been able to escalate the level of deterrence through the years to what we are witnessing now.

That is why any ruling to curb that "automatic" escalation (like today) is wholeheartedly welcomed.

IMO there are also subtler layers of racism coloring these policies. It's not as blatant as the far-right rhetoric, but a persistent undertone within elements of Israeli society justifies severe deterrence tactics and totally overide any empathy learnt from historical lessons.

throwaway55479··on Meta censors pro-Palestinian views on a global scale, report claims
That is "the beauty" of this conflict (if something this heinous could ever have a beautiful side): It poses many interesting technical challenges. But, quite understandably, people everywhere (including HN) are fast to move the "warring" right onto our screens (hence the flagging).

So, as you mentioned, algorithmic feeds is one of them. There are many others like how to create temporary infrastructure for such a besieged, war-torn city [0].

I suppose many would say, "This goes for all wars, what is special about this one?" Well, I would argue this is a "special conflict". It is one of (if not THE) longest-running military occupation in the world [1], where, coincidentally, the US spends its largest tax-payers-funded foreign aid [2].

Edit: And because many are now commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, it is worth recalling that it is also special for being that birth's place (spiritually, if not literally).

throwaway55479··on Palestinians in Gaza using eSim cards to get around communications blackout
Certainly, many haven't eaten in days. yet, the need for communication remains crucial. It's regrettable that HN discussions about the war often quickly spiral into another "war". There are some suitable angles, like, the challenge of providing connectivity to 2 million people lacking main electricity and with sporadic internet access for months. If a city in the Western world were confronted with this scenario, the uproar and dialogue here would likely be intense.

throwaway55479··on The pro-Israel information war
While it might be a bit dated, the leaked 2009 Global Language Dictionary [1] remains pertinent to this subject. Essentially, it serves as a manual for communication. I discovered it through another intriguing resource, the documentary "The Lobby - USA." [2] Admittedly, the perspective it offers is somewhat biased, but it provides a straighforward presentation of the situation, especially through the lens of an undercover agent who recorded behind-the-scenes discussions among advocates of the Pro-Israel Information War.
