throwaway422432··on What does Palantir actually do?
It actually first jumped significantly after the earnings call the day before the election.

A 54% growth on the commercial side, being added to the S&P500, 1b in free cash flow, etc. Since then there have been constant announcements of more success resulting in buy-ins from all the big institutional funds including sovereign wealth funds.

Sure, the political connections are there, but is that why everyone's buying?

throwaway422432··on Facial recognition vans to be rolled out across police forces in England
Correct.

Why do the beat when you can sit at your desk and watch or wait for the cameras to pick something up?

They seem to have forgotten that a police presence, i.e. a patrol car cruising around or police walking or cycling the streets not only prevents some crime but makes people feel safer by their visibility.

You can get UV protection hats that have a clip-able face cover for those times you just want to go outside for a minute without having to slap on sunscreen.

Have a few at home just for that, but they could definitely have a dual-use.

And Britain was Airstrip One in 1984 with most of the scenes taking place in what would have been London. Orwell definitely considered it possible that they could go that way.

Blackjack, while still a gambling game with a lot of randomness, would be a far better choice for children; particularly learning about calculating the probability of getting a card you want.

throwaway422432··on Palantir is extending its reach even further into government
Missed jumping in at $16 and ended up watching and waiting for a year.

Eventually jumped in at $40 just before the election, as well as picking some bargain shares in critical mineral mining/processing. All are looking very good right now.

During the Falklands War, the Royal Navy requisitioned a lot of civilian ships at short notice, the Atlantic Conveyor being the most famous after it was sunk.

The US Navy would likely do the same, the biggest issue could be retaining enough crew.

throwaway422432··on UN report finds UN reports are not widely read
This may be true of organisations that are funded by USAid, etc; so they essentially allow the Government of the day to execute policies while attempting to avoid responsibility when the "my tax money pays for what" questions arise.

A lot of NGOs/charities/foundations are simply vehicles for tax avoidance/reduction or nepotistic job creation. There are very few that are truly altruistic, or maybe once were but eventually become indistinguishable from a corporation in how they are run, and what they pay their executives.

throwaway422432··on More honey bees dying, even as antibiotic use halves
Yes, and the mites (Varroa Destructor) found in the collapsed colonies were resistant to miticides.

While widespread antibiotic use is bad for bees it's nothing compared to what the viruses transmitted by the mites do to them.

throwaway422432··on The Zen of Quakerism (2016)
I learnt Quaker silent worship about 30 years ago and the practice of centering down which I still practice despite turning atheist many years ago.

More recently did a mindfulness session, and was quietly surprised that I already knew the forms, just without emphasis on the self (breathing, body position and all the muscle aches, itches, etc).

throwaway422432··on The Fed says this is a cube of $1M. They're off by half a million
Reminds me of getting a 20c coin in change with a Kiwi* on the back. My younger self always felt like I had been shortchanged 5c.

* AUD 20c was an identical size and same embossed image of the Queen, but a platypus on the reverse.

I think it depends on where you grow up.

Still not as amorphous as the word "now" and its various prefixes when it comes to South Africans and time.

throwaway422432··on Finding a former Australian prime minister’s passport number on Instagram (2020)
Fun fact.

I once bought a very cheap Optus phone just to use for work 2FA (might have been PingID). Never registered it but it could still authenticate via the Optus cell network using a lower level transport protocol. Meant I could use 2FA with no wifi connection and the phone in airplane mode to conserve battery.

throwaway422432··on Finding a former Australian prime minister’s passport number on Instagram (2020)
You would only have a TFN if you are working and potentially paying tax. So generally anyone under 16 would not have one.

Closest might be a Medicare Card which gives you access to free/discounted public health that can be used as part of identification. Usually children are on their parents card.

Drivers licence is also a primary identifier, and students can use their school student id.

throwaway422432··on Finding a former Australian prime minister’s passport number on Instagram (2020)
Look up Australia's 100 point proof of identity which is used by Gov and most corporate entities in Australia.

A passport is a primary document (equivalent to a birth certificate) and gives you 60-70 points. It can't be used alone, but in conjunction with another id (forged or stolen) would allow for identify theft.

throwaway422432··on AlphaGenome: AI for better understanding the genome
His genius is really just making good bets on people, and letting them do their thing.

People like Scott Guthrie who was a key person behind dot.net, and went on to be the driving force behind Azure. Anyone who did any dot.net work 10+ years ago would know the ScottGu blog and his red shirt.

Google similarly bet on Demis, and the results also show. For someone who got his start doing level design on Syndicate (still one of my all-time favourite games) he's come a long way.

throwaway422432··on The Business of Betting on Catastrophe
So, it's betting not on the outcome, but specifics of the event. The analogy could be sports betting where you bet on a player making a particular individual score, not just the win/loss.

At the end of the day, if it prevents bankrupting companies, countries and the insurers when an event occurs then it is a good thing.

I know of a Australian-based insurer that only operates in the far North primarily for residents who can't get reasonable premiums to cover for floods and cyclones from the major insurers. They reinsure with a global company so paying out an event in Australia is offset with no events elsewhere.

Interestingly the frequency of cyclones is decreasing, but the strength is projected to increase with "global warming": Higher water temperature = more energy. So betting on the strength makes sense.

throwaway422432··on The Matrix (1999) Filming Locations – Shot-for-Shot – Sydney, Australia [video]
That can make for a very weird viewing experience.

"Oddball" was filmed in an Australian town I grew up in. There was a chase scene that combined and compressed multiple locations. In one particular scene you are looking at an extra with a backdrop of part of the main street, but the location he is looking at (supposedly directly across the road) is actually about 1/2km away.

Return of the Jedi (6) was perfectly fine. More like 7 which was ok as a nostalgic cameo vehicle, but resulted in throwing away the Rogue Squadron arc which should have always remained canon.

But not like that hadn't happened before. Anyone remember Splinter of the Mind's Eye, the original sequel to Star Wars?

At some point your kids will also be grown up and able to make their own choices.

In the meantime, get a dog. They thrive in dull consistency and will love you for it. They will happily walk the same path each day and just sleep at your feet while you do what you need to do.
