throwaway2847··on RAII and the Rust/Linux Drama
There was a lot of money poured into Rust by large companies and they're looking for immediate and tangible impact (this helps to explain a lot of the negative feelings on all sides imo)

Investors aren't going to abide by a long-term experiment with undefined success outcomes.

throwaway2847··on What I wish I knew about ESPP and RSUs sooner
Being pushed into a different tax bracket is something people should always keep in mind. Different tax brackets affects the calculus of which 401k to use (post/pre tax), decisions about liquidating tax deferred assets, it goes on
throwaway2847··on Learning Elm by porting a medium-sized web frontend from React (2019)
There was a major loss of confidence and enthusiasm due to things like this. Very much not a project to build a business on

throwaway2847··on Cisco to acquire Isovalent
Always sad to see a small player swallowed up by Cisco.

As someone who had the unfortunate experience of going through a Cisco acquisition, there's a familiar pattern.

You can expect that their product roadmap will be torn to shreds as Cisco VPs start streaming in to demand poorly designed integration projects with Cisco's terrible platforms to pad their own resumes. Talent drain ensues as Cisco's low bar for hiring starts to take effect.

The product will keep selling, since Cisco's MO is to leverage its massive sales machine to boost revenue, but there will be little concern for the actual tech itself going forward.

throwaway2847··on Startups weather a dismal year – 543 have declared bankruptcy or shut down
What was the conversation like with VCs when they turned you down for additional capital?
throwaway2847··on In Defense of No-Code’s Potential
What's nice about these platforms is that they scale with the complexity you need. You can drop down to Python for scripting operations and UI interfaces in TouchDesigner, GLSL if you want to build your own shader pipelines, etc.
throwaway2847··on Why some researchers think I’m wrong about social media and mental illness
Definitely not, if you reply to a sufficiently famous person in a way they dislike there's always a risk they'll (in)directly turn their followers against you.
throwaway2847··on Virtual Threads Arrive in JDK 21, Ushering a New Era of Concurrency
Why would you need an async framework? All blocking I/O in the Java runtime has been changed to yield in a virtual thread.
throwaway2847··on Building GitHub with Ruby on Rails
Stripe doesn't use Ruby on Rails, they have a framework developed in house
throwaway2847··on The End of Silicon Valley (Bank)
The article describes exactly what the safe choice is: short term treasuries. The option that SIVB ignored in order to yield chase.
throwaway2847··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
Absolutely, businesses should worry about bank failures taking down their uninsured assets. If a business's assets are not insured, they should not expect to be made whole by an insurance policy in case of tail risk failures.
throwaway2847··on The collapse of SVB exposes the largest crack in the economy
Nobody forced SVB to buy up long bonds at negative real yields.
throwaway2847··on GitHub Actions Down / Degraded
There's pretty severe scaling issues with GH Enterprise for large codebases, but for small shops it's probably fine.
throwaway2847··on Down the Cloudflare / Stripe / OWASP Rabbit Hole
HN is like any other community and is thoroughly captured by some hype machines (Cloudflare, the language that shall not be named) and virulently opposed to others (cryptocurrency)
throwaway2847··on OWASP Needs to Evolve
The projects should leave. I don't think they are a critical component of OWASP compared to the educational material provided through their documentation and conferences.
throwaway2847··on Twilio is laying off 17% of workforce
Twilio doesn't have a high debt burden. They're affected like all other growth tech because future cash flows are discounted against the risk free rate.
throwaway2847··on Tech CEOs Should Be Held Accountable, or Even Fired, Amid Layoffs
My company did a big round of layoffs and it was pretty revealing that not a single director or above were laid off. Despite reduced headcount, the org chart got DEEPER in some cases. For all the talk of bloat in the tech world, nobody wants to point fingers at directors who have little to do but schedule very expensive meetings with the directors under them.
throwaway2847··on FTC cracks down on companies that impose harmful noncompete restrictions
An NDA, same way they do now.
