throwaway27727··on An elegy for GNU and RMS
That is quite the false dichotomy (trichotomy?)
throwaway27727··on California ban on gas furnaces and water heaters
And the poor will be the first to be thrown out with the bath water.
throwaway27727··on Chem Lab Made Me a Better Dev
As someone who never did lab work before lab, and now maintains a healthy work-life balance where I do work during work hours, I got a different message.
throwaway27727··on Ask HN: Is there any “PBS Kids” alternatives these days?
That's a great idea. How do you find appropriate and engaging content? I can go back in time to find copies of classics but I'm sure there are attractive modern options as well. This is one of the pluses of PBS, where you could let your kid loose with whatever they're showing and be comfortable with it.
throwaway27727··on Amazon putting a three-day pause on reviews for Rings of Power
Because it breaks with how we always imagined Tolkien's world to look.
throwaway27727··on Google employee resigns after ‘retaliation’ for protesting Israeli contract
And when your money goes into rockets
throwaway27727··on Ask HN: What's your strategy to handle your phone being stolen?
For Android, you had better keep your 2FA codes in an accessible location if you plan on locking/finding your phone. There's nothing like losing your phone, trying to log into your account from your SO/friend/stranger's phone so that you can. get to Find My Phone, and being blocked from taking action because you don't have your 2fa codes on you.

Solutions: First obvious one is to keep a physical copy of your recovery keys in your wallet. Of course, that doesn't help if your wallet is stolen, so the next option that I use:

Keep a KeePass (or equivalent) database in a hosted cloud like Dropbox (that DOESN'T require 2fa), holding your recovery keys. This way your database is protected by two passwords, so that if either are compromised you are still protected. You'll have to memorize both passwords but that's a good tradeoff imo. Then use KeeWeb (preferably a self-hosted one) to access your database and codes. So the model here is: borrow a phone, log into Dropbox, download KP database, open KeeWeb, open database, and get your 2fa codes. Log into Google (actually, third password you should memorize), and lock/ring/clear your phone.

Put differently: https://speakola.com/political/margaret-thatcher-on-socialis...
throwaway27727··on LackRack: IKEA's cheapest table is perfectly sized to rackmount computers (2020)
It becomes a discussion of engineering decisions
throwaway27727··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
I seem to recall the green being a few shades darker (so there was higher contrast)
throwaway27727··on Robinhood lays off 23% of staff
How much of that compensation was in Robinhood stock, which dropped 90%? How much of it vested?

These aren't rhetorical questions, I'd like to actually know these details.

throwaway27727··on People Who Apply for Jobs by Showing Up
It's better to actually give a dead simple question instead of leaving them guessing. When interviewing interns, we would start off with "print all the items in an array" - besides for instantly weeding out candidates who couldn't code at all, (and there were a surprising amount), it's also a great confidence booster for them before moving on to the real question.
throwaway27727··on Ask HN: What makes you optimistic about the future?
The idea is that you had the courage to get near enough to a lion to die by it, but you're just a speck of dust to a plane flying a nuclear warhead.
throwaway27727··on Absurd Trolley Problems
I'd imagine that turning off someone's life support (respirator) is akin to killing them, but something like a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order would be allowing to die.
throwaway27727··on Thank you to our maintainers
They're referring to maintainers of projects that GitHub relies on for their own work, so calling them "our maintainers" isn't much of a linguistic stretch.
throwaway27727··on What a gas stove ban means for restaurants
If you really want to optimize for the long term, obtaining goodwill by not making the forced habit changes first would be better.
throwaway27727··on Almost all searches on my independent search engine are now from SEO spam bots
This is great but it seems reddit has done something to mess with their date reporting. When looking for recent posts, I might see a result on Google that says it was posted in the last few days, but on clicking the result will actually be from years ago.
throwaway27727··on Homes in 97% of U.S. cities are overvalued, Moody's says
It also ignores the vast differences between densely populated and not very populated cities.
throwaway27727··on Ask HN: Tech Salaries and Wealth Inequality
Is the reason for high unemployment due to people who want jobs but can't get them?
throwaway27727··on The Ars Technica guide to mechanical keyboards
Only if the Fn key is configurable. Nothing worse than having an entire key on the bottom left dedicated just to media controls as they often are.
throwaway27727··on Vimeo: “We are a B2B solution, not the indie version of YouTube.”
Apparently her videos are multiple-hour long. So, caveats applied.
throwaway27727··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
This extra daylight in the evening is killing my babies sleep schedule - but I'm sure to enjoy it once they're older and they don't need such early naps.
throwaway27727··on Walgreens replaced some fridge doors with screens, and some shoppers hate it
> How someone so unable to speak plainly could forge a career as a professional journalist I have no idea....

Minimum word limits throughout college, for starters.

throwaway27727··on Mechanical keyboards that offer custom-built features for half the price
Why are split keyboards so expensive? The UHK shown on the homepage as configured costs about $500, and the second one is one of the cheapest available at $150.
throwaway27727··on States where teachers’ unions are strongest are slowest to get back to in-person
Applications, some form of interview and or testing, and rejections. Same as a university system - let students compete for spots and let schools compete for students.

I admit that there would have to be a system that forces schools to take "undesirables" who can't get accepted anywhere, which is the hard part.

throwaway27727··on Ask HN: People of FAANG, do your coworkers and mgmt read HN mentions of company?
Any chance you work on MS teams?
throwaway27727··on Meta is not threatening to leave Europe
No one in my circles cares about Facebook leaving Europe. Until they realize that Facebook includes Instagram and WhatsApp and they do actually use those other services.

Point being: to all the commenters saying no one cares, a lot more people care than you think.

throwaway27727··on Resistbot: Contact your officials by sending a text
I recall trying this one time a few years back to contact my congressman and senators. Was disappointed to see that the only available options were canned messages with specific viewpoints, and that it seemed to let me send those messages to politicians on only one side of the aisle.
throwaway27727··on Tesla Model S Goes 752 Miles with a Startup's Prototype Battery
What electric car in the US costs 8k? I assume that is used, but even then that sounds cheap.
throwaway27727··on New York City will allow 800k noncitizens to vote in local elections
Should we also use the inverse of that? I.e., those who don't contribute in taxes should not get a vote? If not, why?
