throwaway2214··on AI is coming for your children
this is the same in any field, 99% of human content is terrible, including this comment (and your comment)

the thing is, we need the other 1%, but when in absolute numbers it is small, you can still kind of find it, but imagine you have to look through 1 billion books to find one good book, it is as good as this 1% disappearing

throwaway2214··on Ted Kaczynski, known as the 'Unabomber,' has died in prison at age 81
having read his manifesto multiple times, I think its better to read Ellul's books (particularly Propaganda and Technological Society)

throwaway2214··on We will be shutting down neeva.com
none of this makes any sense

in 2 years i will just run local llm and not touch google/microsoft models with a ten foot pole

the internet will be full of generated garbage and rendered useless

throwaway2214··on LSD: Not Even Once
haha i have most of the negative symptoms and never had any drugs what so ever

> Continuous anxiety about literally nothing. I felt like a student who didn’t do their homework, and was dreading their teacher calling on them - for 24 hours a day.

this one is most fun :)

kind of like the end of the world is coming and you are supposed to do something but you dont know what, but you know its the most important thing that has to be done

throwaway2214··on TikTok’s algorithm keeps pushing suicide to vulnerable kids
if their parents give them heroin, will we turn blind eye?
throwaway2214··on Teacher failed kid for essay because an AI-detection tool flagged his work
'Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.'
throwaway2214··on Bing AI can play chess
you assume they just reproduces the training set, but when they get big enough they start to "understand" things, when the input is really big it actually can never "guess" the next word in the batch, so it has to "learn" concepts
throwaway2214··on Jupyterlab Desktop
the jupyter desktop plus whisper and gpt might be the new way we use computers, like iron man's jarvis :)

You probably are considered abusive to someone, you might not even know it.
throwaway2214··on Ask HN: How do you trust that your personal machine is not compromised?
i used to care great deal about this, but recently i gave up

why do you even care? most of your files are either on apple's computers or google's computers

throwaway2214··on Stable Diffusion macOS native app
what do you mean? you can open an issue on github and there are build instructions in the readme
throwaway2214··on EmailTriager
you mean now? ads and cookie warnings and spam
throwaway2214··on AI chatbots are not a replacement for search engines
maybe not search engines, but it has totally replaced stackoverflow and google for searching for docs or even wikipedia in some sense (e.g. make alpha blend between two argb uint32 pixels)

google has been going progressively worse to find what i need, sometimes i even have to go to second page, wasting time clicking on bullshit markov chain seo sites to find out how to parse date in whatever new language i am learning

with chatgpt: parse a date from string in the v programming language, try googling that

throwaway2214··on Evolution of the Ethereum proof-of-stake consensus protocol
this line of thinking is quite difficult to get by in the modern world, same applies to vaccines, or to your car, or to the food you eat the browser you use, etc, in fact if you randomly look in your room right now it is very likely that you will be shocked (e.g. the complexity of the HDMI cable)

throwaway2214··on Poll: Have You Caught Covid?
wow this poll shows how many standard deviations the hackernews audience is away from the norm
throwaway2214··on NopeCHA: Captcha Solver
isnt it time to abandon the idea and accept that the internet is more bots than humans and more malicious and hostile actors rather than well meaning ones?

twitter/fb/google with their vast ml knowhow still cant figure out how to weed out the bots, even the ones that are doing obviously bot actions, at this point we are just increasing the tracking and are in diminishing returns, so maybe its time for a paradigm shift of some sort.

show your id to read a blog because the blog has ads and we want to know you are not a bot, is this where we are heading?

maybe even worse send your faceid and touchid hashes or crypto signed heart rate?

throwaway2214··on EU approves effective ban on new combustion engine cars from 2035
or fix the cities? wfh, better public transport, incentivize local business, e-bikes, etc

individual cars are not going to solve anything, ev or ic or whatever

throwaway2214··on The $300B Google-Meta advertising duopoly is under attack
most of people on hackernews experience very different internet than the rest of the world, due to adblocks, pi holes, netflix, paid youtube, etc...

most web pages are up to 60% ads, search results are almost all ads, tv is mostly ads

google with their "answering question" thing has thought people to just trust it and click on first results, most of which are ads

ads, cookie banners and privacy popups cover easily most of the page, especially on mobile.

throwaway2214··on Ask HN: How to deal with children's online habits?
its school vacation now, and its like 40 degrees outside

watching youtube and crunchyroll for 4 hours is not the worst

i remember at this age when i was not ouside i could watch cow and chicken marathon for like 8 hours straight :)

throwaway2214··on Ask HN: How to deal with children's online habits?
i have a daughter(11)

* i check her feed (together with her) on youtube/instagram once a week for toxic videos, and teach her how to manipulate her feed; either she modifies the feed or the feed modifies her

* i encourage her to pay for the apps/games, for skins, battle passes etc, and if there is 'pay to remove ads' functionality i always pay

* i have a good pi-hole setup at home blocking malware/adult sites etc

* i allow her to watch 3-4 hours of youtube per day (but long videos, longer than 10 minutes per video)

* i allow and encourage her to play video games as much as she wants, but real games, like spiderman on ps4 or fortnite, no lootbox shit

* i dont allow tiktok and youtube shorts for more than 10 minutes per day (enough so she links sent by her friends)

* apps and purchases are with approval, but for each app she has to tell me how this app is making money out of her, or for each purchase she has to explain how is the thing she is buying valuable to her

throwaway2214··on Things I wish everyone knew about Git (Part I)

throwaway2214··on Jabra denies support for Elite 85t Bluetooth earbuds on computers
today i bought 9$ wired 3.5mm jack headphones (noname) better than 90$ sony and 300$ bose

everything is a scam

throwaway2214··on No Dislikes has officially ruined YouTube for me
It saddens me what will be lost if youtube continues on this route, 99% of the content is garbage, and the 1% good content is hardly monetizable, and there is 0.001% that content creators monetize with some form of sponsorship, but not so much from google's pov

You can see Dirac himself speak (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma7TSAq87lg), Feynman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3mhkYbznBk), Jung(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs3HK3pxVAY), Minsky, McCarthy, Ellul, Ram Dass, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Terence McKenna and Alan Watts and many many more people who greatly influenced our understanding and way of life

Youtube is quickly turning worse, just as google, with the flood of click baity content, and not only them, look at cnn.com or foxnews.com you will see every single article is with click bait title.

I dont think the issue is in the dislike button, I think they have to up their game to help you navigate the sea of garbage to find some islands of good content.

The reddit rule of 90/9/1% is no longer true (90% of community members are lurkers who read or observe, but don't contribute. 9% of community members edit or respond to content but don't create content of their own) now it seems we are more to 20/30/50% (my intuition), and the tooling and understanding used to decide what content to create and game the system has improved a lot. Like in video games, the way people play videogames now is fundamentally different than 5 years ago, now you are expected to minmax your character, items, gameplay etc because there are so many tools and guides out there to help you, but the same happens with content creation.

Its a different world now, and the algorithms have not caught up yet.

throwaway2214··on NY Senate Bill S5474 proposing a universal single payer health plan for NYers

should be fine if they pay their student loans no? isnt that the main reason the salaries are so high? cost of living + debt

minified js is not greatly smaller than gzipped js, I think the whole minification thing is a swing and a miss and now we have to deal with source maps and shit, and build pipelines and etc
