throwaway2019V··on Tell HN: Scammed by Google Fi customer support out of a device trade-in
Agreed. Google Cloud started charging me for services I clearly didn't use, and I was very scared of doing a chargeback. It was only after weeks of back and forth and getting explicit directions from Google to do a chargeback (they don't issue refunds) that I finally did it. I took screenshots of the emails of their communications in case they do ban my accounts, so I at least have some proof that they told me to initiate the chargeback.
throwaway2019V··on Mystery of interstellar visitor 'Oumuamua gets trickier
Just like we're the only form of life that we've observed in the universe. The chances that the first result is also any sort of outlier are very slim. That's why with the decades of effort and sophisticated tools that we've employed, we've been able to find and study lifeforms on so many other planets.
throwaway2019V··on The best way to exercise self-control is not to exercise it at all
This is actually brilliant in the sense that the key to resisting temptation might be to put as many potential obstacles in the way as possible.

If you can't resist purchasing junk food off the shelves, then put a limit on your credit card, or leave your credit card at home and only bring enough money to the store for essentials. And if that's not enough, then limit yourself to only shopping at health food stores where the options are less tempting, and so on.

throwaway2019V··on Pathological Lying: Theoretical and Empirical Support for a Diagnostic Entity
> How can people become good at math and/or programming, where they have to learn to become very precise and truthful, if they are surrounded by (also "white") lies all the time.

It takes more precision to lie and memorize who you lied to and about what and to not make conflicting statements around people whom you have told opposing versions of the truth than it does to tell the truth.

throwaway2019V··on Why don't founders validate properly? Or, why didn't *you* validate properly
These are spot on - having fallen victim to all three.

I'll add that, for the tech minded, building is easy in comparison to validating. Just fire up the IDE, write code, and debug. Validating involves putting your idea (and by association, yourself) out there for the world to potentially ridicule... and then trying to convince people to open up their wallets to your idea. Not so easy.

throwaway2019V··on How much equity should my employer get in my venture?
None of us can say. Check your contract.
throwaway2019V··on S&P 500 triggers 15-minute trading halt for the second time this week
Yeah, I get that. But I mean the plural version should be exclusive to cryptocurrencies since I've never seen the plural form of cryptography in use. It seems it's fairly unambiguous in that "cryptos" as a plural term has never been used to refer to cryptography(ies).
throwaway2019V··on S&P 500 triggers 15-minute trading halt for the second time this week
Why? "cryptos" only refers to cryptocurrencies since nobody says cryptographies.
throwaway2019V··on Ask HN: How do you maintain your medical record?
In the U.S. After a health scare, I personally called every clinic I've ever been to and asked to be faxed my records. I remember they charged a small fee (maybe 25 cents per page or something). It was tedious, but now I have my files on my hand whenever I need them.
throwaway2019V··on Norweigan oil fund
That's not an order of a magnitude.

Even then, so, Venezuela produces 1/5th per capita the oil of Norway. Why doesn't there exist a fund with $37k/person in Venezuela?
