throwaway19937··on San Francisco's homelessness is a humanitarian crisis
> That's the reason you've lost empathy for them, because they are humans who have to shit and are denied access to toilets?

Nope, I lost empathy because in Seattle the homeless are exempt from prosecution and commit crimes with impunity. People like Francisco Calderon (https://komonews.com/news/project-seattle/warrant-issued-for...) or Travis Berge (https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/meth-mental-illness-murder-...) are repeatedly released to commit crimes and harm others.

throwaway19937··on San Francisco's homelessness is a humanitarian crisis
The baby isn't (yet) a violent habitually offending addict like Travis Berge or Francisco Calderon.
throwaway19937··on San Francisco's homelessness is a humanitarian crisis
Many social problems in west coast cities are self-inflicted but there's also the 9th circuit's Martin v. Boise decision (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_v._Boise). It prevents criminalizing public camping unless there's shelter space for everyone.

Edited to fix link, thanks!

One issue that CLAs solve is the problem of copyright termination after the death of the author; see (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/17/203).

DannyBee is an open source lawyer, his comment (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18148727) gives some other advantages of CLAs.

throwaway19937··on Why San Francisco’s city government is so dysfunctional
Many social problems in west coast cities are self-inflicted but there's also the 9th circuit's Martin v. Boise decision (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_v._Boise); it prevents criminalizing public camping unless there's shelter space for everyone. This is effectively impossible given the number of homeless people so we're stuck with the encampments.
throwaway19937··on Apple’s Mistake
Android is a low-quality platform with limited security updates, multiple app stores, preinstalled crapware, and other debris. I chose an iPhone so I wouldn't have to deal with these issues.
throwaway19937··on Right or left, you should be worried about big tech censorship
> Do you want our future determined by a few well-informed, rational people? Or do you want it determined by an ignorant, short-sighted mass?

An elite in practice means that we're stuck with irrational beliefs such as Lysenkoism. Democracy allows beliefs to compete and often correct ideas win. It's far from perfect but still has a better track record than self-styled rational elites.

The following quote is from Neal Stephenson's In the Beginning Was the Command Line.

> But more importantly, it comes out of the fact that, during this century, intellectualism failed, and everyone knows it. In places like Russia and Germany, the common people agreed to loosen their grip on traditional folkways, mores, and religion, and let the intellectuals run with the ball, and they screwed everything up and turned the century into an abattoir. Those wordy intellectuals used to be merely tedious; now they seem kind of dangerous as well.

throwaway19937··on We replaced rental brokers with software and filled 200 vacant apartments
Things can always get worse.

Consider what would happen if brokers disappear and your application is rejected by an AI from a company that most landlords use.

throwaway19937··on What's the weirdest/best thing you've done?
Here are some of the weird things I did in college.

I bought a military surplus flamethrower, called the CIA on a dare, and performed standup comedy.

throwaway19937··on Response from Greg Kroah-Hartman to University of Minnesota Researchers
> How are they different? Honest question.

The security of the Linux kernel affects millions of people.

Submitting fake papers to omphaloskeptic social science journals affects thousands at most.

throwaway19937··on The Developer Certificate of Origin is a great alternative to a CLA
I don't think that would matter; you'd have to ask a software licensing lawyer for a definitive answer.

DannyBee's comment (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18148727) gives some other advantages of CLAs.

throwaway19937··on The Developer Certificate of Origin is a great alternative to a CLA
Developer Certificates of Origin don't solve the problem of copyright termination after the death of the author. See (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/17/203). You can attest the origin but your estate retains the right to terminate the usage rights after your death.
throwaway19937··on The Disintegration of the ACLU
> The way to make sure you have the right to talk about people being gay is to fight for those rights by throwing bricks at cop cars, not to trust a bunch of think tanks who say they value the abstract ideal of free speech.

If there's enough civil unrest then it's much easier for a law-and-order candidate like Nixon to win votes; I'm expecting this to happen in the next election.

throwaway19937··on Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up
> How come other professions like Law and Medicine were able to make huge progress overcoming similar problems while tech continues to lag behind?

There were class action lawsuits that required law firms, law schools, medical schools, and hospitals to accept women doctors and lawyers.

Technology didn't have these interventions so it's unsurprising that sexism is more of an issue than in other fields.

throwaway19937··on Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up
Kim Elsesser's book Sex and the Office: Women, Men, and the Sex Partition That's Dividing the Workplace has some concrete advice on this topic.
throwaway19937··on A professor declined a $60K research award from Google

Dr. Gebru has a lot of support among the professor's peers in AI ethics; accepting the award would paint a target on his back.

Edited for clarity.

There's plenty of blame to go around.

The EU started negotiating later and signed a contract with fewer remedies than the UK (https://www.politico.eu/article/the-key-differences-between-...). It's not at all surprising that AZ is focusing their efforts on the UK.

throwaway19937··on EU vaccine rollout severely lags behind
The Israelis paid more[1] and placed orders earlier than the EU; it's not surprising their orders are higher priority.

throwaway19937··on EU vaccine rollout severely lags behind

throwaway19937··on That time Sprinklr's VP of design tried to get me fired
I didn't flag this story but it doesn't gratify one's intellectual curiosity (https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html).

throwaway19937··on Librem Tunnel Is Leaving iOS

Jokes are usually supposed to be funny.

Your response is at best antipathetic; support technicians aren’t going to go out of their way to help you.

Was your goal to rant or solve your problem? If it was the latter then you may want to use a different approach in the future.

The 2000 election was a mess. (https://www.law.gmu.edu/assets/files/publications/working_pa...) makes what I consider a credible argument that Gore was in the wrong.

(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_United_States_election_vo...) has a pretty good summary of the issues. The voting machine claims were a big deal at the time; I remember a lot of news coverage about that the voting machine companies were owned by Republicans.

I think the 2016 fraud claims were about Russian hacking (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_United_States_presidentia...). (https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/usappblog/2018/09/11/many-democrats-...) claims that many Democrats questioned the 2016 election.

> On the left I see claims of disenfranchisement done through legal means, which whether you agree with or not is at least something real and concrete.

I agree that disenfranchisement is an issue and am in favor of federal voting standards and protecting the voting rights of convicted felons.
