throwaway189262··on Sir Kazuo Ishiguro warns of young authors self-censoring out of 'fear'
Unprofessional opinion, I think the powers on the right are pushing "cancel culture" to make the crazy stuff they're saying seem okay.

Like, we have a congresswoman blaming California wildfires on Jewish space lasers.

The republicans can deflect from the crazy by claiming "the left" is "cancelling" these people. When in reality any public figure that said crap like that would be shunned. Probably even more in past when American society was outwardly more polite.

throwaway189262··on Speed Is the Killer Feature
Anecdotal, but speed and refresh rate are really important for gaming. I thought >60fps was a gimmick, but a friend's new screen convinced me otherwise. It's visually obvious up to around 120fps. Moving the mouse around, I can see increase in frame rate to about 200hz.

I upgraded my monitor to 144hz, got a low delay mouse and headset (some headsets have over 400ms delay and audio response is faster than visual!). My ranking in games I've played for years has gone up about 1 standard deviation. I'm at my record high ranking in every game and it continues to rise.

Likely biased study, but Nvidia found an eyebrow raising difference in player performance when using higher refresh rates. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/geforce-gives-you-...

Redditors lean farther left than the average american. The average internet user is also left of the average american because they trend younger.

But it's also undeniable that the average American leans left. That's why Republicans lose the popular vote in both chambers of congress and the presidency nearly every election. Their positions are unpopular, that's why they get down voted on "mainstream" sites where the user base is large enough to revert to the mean.

And campaign focus outside of urban cores would mean that the average American is even farther left than they appear to be.

Biden is farther right than the average Democrat because he needed to be to win. The structural advantages to Conservatives means the Democratic party needs to run centrist candidates.

In comparison, the same advantages mean the Republican party can still win with extreme right wing candidates. For example, Trump was the first president that never hit 50% approval rating but it was still high enough for him to win and do okay during his second campaign.

Any internet platform that didnt moderate would be overwhelmed with spam, porn, scams, hate, etc. Censorship and moderation are the same, a set of rules you must follow to participate. Gab is has huge problems with porn spam because of free speech policies.

Imagine if email providers were not allowed to filter. Your email would be totally unusable.

Enacting no filters beyond what's illegal would make most of the internet unusable. Like imagine if HN had no moderation? It would lose its original purpose.

So what do you mean support free speech exactly? Allow people to freely post porn, scams, lies, death threats?

throwaway189262··on Gab has been hacked and 70GB of data leaked
> It’s incredible that supporting free speech is considered to be only important enough to the “far right” now to be worth marketing to.

It's because private companies don't want to host their extreme views. Private companies free to regulate their own platforms is a very Republican position.

Hobby Lobby and Chic Fil A are perfect examples of right leaning companies imposing their own political views of what is acceptable on their employees and customers.

It would be liberal to regulate what private companies allow or block on their platforms, which is why Republicans complain about being cancelled but don't take action. Forcing companies to allow free speech using regulations is a liberal proposition.

Right leaning people are free to create their own platforms that cater to far right conspiracies, racism, homophobia, death threats, and white supremacists. And that's what they did

It doesn't help that seemingly half the content posted there is made up. Whenever they open the floodgates their narratives get torn to pieces by people that actually know what they're talking about.

Truth isn't welcomed there. For instance, you will be banned for simply stating that Trump lost the election

throwaway189262··on Gab has been hacked and 70GB of data leaked
TLDR: You can be super racist, describe how you're going to kill everyone you don't like, spread crazy fake stories without any consequence.

It's liberal in the same way it would be liberal to have a party where you walk around naked and smear feces on each other.

Definitely a liberal party, but not one that most people want to participate in. Most people would rather have moderation where you're not allow to scream the N word at blacks. Which concentrates N word screamers and similar onto these free speech forums

Right leaning content is downvoted because the US population leans left.

The centrist view, the average American, would be considered a leftist by conservatives. This is why they think they're getting brigaded everywhere. They are. Their beliefs are unpopular.

The only reason the US Republican party is viable while being so far right is structural voting advantages. That's why they've lost the popular vote almost every time for 30+ years. That's why 50% of senators are Republican when only ~43% of the populations votes R.

On the internet where these artificial advantages aren't present it's much more obvious that Republican policy is broadly unpopular, and conservative opinion is the minority. Or more accurately, the moderate left is actually the center, and the average Republican is substantially far right.

throwaway189262··on Go is not an easy language
I was on the Java hate train till I was forced to use it. It became my favorite language. For being so old, Java has avoided feature creep and bad decisions that make old code painful to deal with.

Sometimes I work on 10+ year old areas of codebase and it's fine. Compared to dumpster fire of 10 year old JS/Python/C++ it's paradise.

I use lombok judiciously to avoid getters/setters, the cruftiest part of Java. Newer versions of Java are quite pleasant.

Java is extremely mature. I pull in a library and it "just works" 99% of the time. No worries about the version of Java is was built for or missing native dependencies. Practically every language falls short of the polished user experience in Java.

I don't like Kotlin because the non-Android experience is an afterthought and it's a captured language by Google and Jetbrains. Java has a lot more hands at the wheel.

throwaway189262··on Go is not an easy language
Kotlin is better on paper but IMO, only the better choice on Android. I always run into Kotlin tooling issues on "non-android" Java. Stuff like Maven plugins not working. Plus, IDE support is only good in IntelliJ and it's been that way for years so I don't expect it to change.

Kotlin fixes tons of issues in the frankensteined Java 8 of Android. You can use Java 15+ everywhere else and its adopting many features that made Kotlin worth using.

Google is pushing Kotlin so they have control over Android language like Apple does for iPhone. It's just a nice layer over Java in the end since 100% interop is required.

> but I'd love something like JavaScript that had the performance of C^

Java honestly is close. Data object creation is notably worse unless you're using Lombok or similar. Besides that, modern Java and JS syntax are similar. And Java doesn't have a horrible underlying object model based on prototype chains.

IMO Go seems easy because it's simple. I know Java and JS well and they're about the same complexity these days.

Knowing both I will never touch JS for backend again. Java is better suited for it. Strong typing is light-years easier to follow code paths and refactor. IDE's, debugging, profiling tools, memory usage, and performance are all better in Javaland. Real threading with proper shared memory exists. App size is smaller since Java bytecode is compact and distributed zipped.

My company stopped using JS on backend after the hype wore off. Our Java backends are easier to monitor and maintain.

throwaway189262··on Go is not an easy language
Leftpad was a result of the JS standard library being terrible and not providing built-ins for such simple, common things.

And Go is the same way...

throwaway189262··on Go is not an easy language
I frequently describe Go as "C, with memory safety and GC". I don't run into many that disagree.

Go is basically how Java was pre-generics. People forget that early Java was much like Go in some respects. Everything casted to object. Not really sure what the object is unless you wrote the code. Lack of common patterns and a rich set of libraries (Guava, Apache Commons).

Early Java was supposed to be safe C++. Converting C++ to Java is still trivial unless there's pointer craziness. Generally copy paste the C++ and change naming conventions.

I hate working on unfamiliar Go projects. Copy pasted code everywhere. And everyone builds their own abstractions because there aren't enough.

I don't understand Go's appeal. To me it feels clunky and stuck in the 90's. Designed by C programmers for C programmers.

Like C it has no generics, bad packaging, and is a pain in the ass to cross compile. Its only killer feature, IMO, is it's fiber threading model and that's quickly being copied by other languages, even ancient Java.

It might be that Denver has more frequent failure. Takeoff power is scaled by temp, altitude, and cargo weight.

throwaway189262··on The Two Hours That Nearly Destroyed Texas’s Electric Grid
> According to a post here on HN a couple of days ago, ERCOT has more stringent regulations on winterization than the Federal regulatory body requires, so basically everything you just said is bullshit

Do you have a source for this? The entire purpose for Texas independent grid is to avoid federal regulation, so I find this hard to believe.

Also, the idea that democrats hate you is mostly from the right and IMO incorrect. Many on the left hate Trump, just like people on the right hate AOC. But that doesn't extend to the average person.

Right leaning media in the US is notorious for fear based reporting. You don't have to look far to see that there's no left leaning equivalence to Rush Limbaugh, Alex Jones, Tucker Carlson, and similar right wing icons that sell news largely on fear and outrage. They sell views based on the idea that democrats are destroying America. This is also the basis of the Tea Party, Pizza gate, and QAnon which also have no left equivalent.

There's a reason why most mainstream media is sedate and frankly boring. Democrats are the party of change, and Republicans have to keep their base afraid so they go vote against it. A lot more Republicans think democrats hate them than the other way around. Because Republicans need it that way to be competitive.

I used to be a republican until I got tired of the constant fear porn. Democrats have been in charge for a large part of my life and the only thing to directly effect me was the ACA which turned out to be a net positive in my life. Nothing scary the Republican pundits always raged about came to pass and I got tired of always being worried about the next big disaster that never came.

throwaway189262··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
I've been out of power since Sunday night. Water out since yesterday. I'm on the seventh floor too. Most of my friends are in even worse situation. I'm a paranoid near doomsday prepped and my batteries are still low.

Walking out of my apartment is indistinguishable from an apocalypse. The emergency system batteries died days ago. Police don't come. The roads are pure ice. Nothing is open. All essential supplies are sold out. Fire systems are all disabled because pipes have burst. Elevators have been gone for a long time. Without a flashlight you might as well be in a cave.

Pray for us. People are going to die

Good write-up. Indeed I'm a novice tinkering with a decent gaming GPU :) . I was initially daunted by ML but the more I read I began to realize the field is quite accessible these days. Most of the time, you don't need to understand why or how this stuff works at a deep level. You just need a good feel of what might work and a training dataset.

Much of that is the enormous amount of work done plastering over complex GPU programming. But some of it is the tinkering nature of solving ML problems.

The field I'm most interested in right now for instance, NLP, is highly dataset dependent. It's fairly easy to exceed SoTA right now using open sourced models if you have a better, more specialized dataset than what's freely available.

throwaway189262··on Half Doses of Moderna Vaccine Produce Neutralizing Antibodies
It could be both. The goal is to evade the innate extracellular immune system while priming adaptive immunity. I don't think we know enough about their RNA modifications to say they put all their focus on one instead of the other.

Traditionally, mRNA vaccines were not very effective. There's definitely some magic "trade secret" sauce in these vaccines.

throwaway189262··on Half Doses of Moderna Vaccine Produce Neutralizing Antibodies
Indeed. But to bash the large corpos, when medical staff figured out they could get an extra dose from most vials the drug companies immediately reduced their shipment contract requirements accordingly. Pretty scummy.
throwaway189262··on Half Doses of Moderna Vaccine Produce Neutralizing Antibodies
It is unfortunate. You can't even avoid downvotes in a fairly rational place like HN :) .

I've been following the vaccine development pretty closely and everything looks like a "this can't fail" mentality.

People need to realize that it's rational to ask if we really need the dose this high and really need a booster because if we find out we don't, it could double or even quadruple our vaccine supply. That could save half a million lives.

It's good to ask questions like this especially when there's a massive worldwide vaccine shortage

throwaway189262··on Half Doses of Moderna Vaccine Produce Neutralizing Antibodies
No traditional adjuvants is interesting, but I know the RNA is modified. It's not the exact mRNA spike protein. I believe they modify the amino acids to modulate immune reaction which may accomplish the same thing.

The immune system doesn't like non-human RNA. Certain sequences, or even abundance of certain amino acids out of balance with human codes can set it off. Special RNA coding may be used in place of traditional adjuvants but much of it is proprietary at this point

Less of them may die if we can get R0 under 1.0 faster by vaccinating those spreading the virus. It's absolutely still an open question IMO.

You are wrong about the first part. There are way more under 65 infected than over. And I've seen some preliminary studies that they do 80%+ of the viral spreading.

Lol "you aren't likely to share the same opinions as me because of a word you used so I I'm going to ignore you". Very intellectual, rational, and nuanced good brain type thinking.

This article is about surgical masks which are basically tissue paper not N95's. In some healthcare settings N95 is required especially when dealing with immunocompromised or extremely infections diseases like active TB or SARS. The evidence for these is much stronger

throwaway189262··on Researchers propose that humidity from masks may lessen severity of Covid-19
Google is good for this. N95 and higher is effective. Mask application matters but they're effective without 100% seal. I don't think they get less effective with time, just harder to breathe through.
throwaway189262··on Researchers propose that humidity from masks may lessen severity of Covid-19
In some (mostly Asian) countries you're expected to wear a mask if you go out when you're sick. Contrast that to freedomland where it's normal to have people hacking like crazy just about everywhere.

It's required to wear a mask 100% of the time in some medical professions. This is usually so you don't get vulnerable people sick, not to protect yourself. Medicine is highly evidence based. If masks didn't work these rules wouldn't exist.

Most of those wearing masks aren't doing it out of "fear and emotion", they're doing it to protect others. We all know that cloth style masks everyone is wearing offer the wearer almost no protection. The value is primarily in the protection they provide to others by blocking aerosols when you breathe and talk.

I get the feeling you follow some news sources that erroneously claim people wear masks to calm their fear and emotions

This is less clear-cut than it seems because nearly everyone that's highest risk is retired and doesn't really need to leave the house. Is it better to tell a dozen pensioners that leave the house once a week for grocies to stay home so younger people can get vaccinated and go back to work? Possibly, depending on who you're asking.

Younger people are far more mobile and so contribute greatly to the spread of the virus. The old and sick don't go out much so aren't the ones spreading the virus.

Is it more important to stop the spread as quickly as possible or directly vaccine the more vulnerable? It's hard to know, and it probably depends on how much vaccine you have. Countries like the US with lots of vaccine may be better off vaccinating the most mobile members of society first to drop total infections ASAP. Countries with less are better off focusing on the vulnerable because they're a long way from herd immunity.

If you have enough vaccine supply you will minimize deaths by eliminating transmission quickest which implies vaccinating the most exposed, not the most vulnerable.

Lol wish I had any jetsetters in my social circles. I would probably have a lot more money.

Anyways, how I did it was have a pre existing condition and act like a scalper. Appointments get taken within seconds of opening up, I assume many are writing their own bots.

I wrote something to notify me when a slot opened up and clicked links many times over a period of a week until a managed to get a spot.

I am in group 1B which is getting vaccinated here so I didn't feel it was unethical.

If you don't have a pre existing conditions that raises your risk (and you're rich) I suppose you could look up the US territories and zip codes with highest adminstration rates and travel there. Some are approaching 35% so they will be opening general doses for anyone soon
