throwaway154··on Ask HN: Why does Google rank the real Python documentation below content farms?
> "if variable is None"

Is missing :

We all know we should do the following, it's much clearer.

# Example of a dictionary to check None

> # Assign None to a variable

> myvar = None

> # Declare dictionary to check None

> mydictionary = {None: 'None is stored in this variable'}

> print(mydictionary[myvar])

If I expected something, I would try it.

throwaway154··on Ask HN: Where can I promote my site and get traffic fast?
Front page of wherever your audience get stuff, be that HN, Reddit or the NYT.
throwaway154··on Plex to block all servers hosted at Hetzner
Why migrate to AWS and not something more like-for-like, perhaps OVH or similar?
throwaway154··on A 3% Mortgage Rate in a 7% World? This Startup Does It
Is this pay more now for a lower interest rate?

To compare it to bonds, imagining I can sell my own bonds: To raise the same amount of money issuing a bond with a 3% coupon now vs. issuing one with a 7% coupon now, I'd have to issue more of the 3% coupon bond.

This seems an obscure bet on perceptions of house prices, house purchase heuristics and mentality, and a lot of imagination. I can imagine why lenders are 'cool to the idea'.

Please correct me if the above understanding's incorrect.

throwaway154··on Black currants were banned in the USA (2017)
To add to mixing... just the right amount of water. Stronger or weaker for a cordial is simply stronger or weaker. But more or less water for Ribena is a question of right or wrong; that's why it's never quite right when going round a friend's house back in the day, or if it is that's uncanny.
throwaway154··on Black currants were banned in the USA (2017)
I feel Ribena's so baked in to British psychology it's not seen as a cordial. Orange, lime, and blackcurrant cordials are cordials.

Ribena's just Ribena. It's mixed with water almost exclusively, lemonade at a push, but blackcurrant cordial would be used for snakebites or rum+Guinness. Surely I'm not alone on this?

throwaway154··on Ask HN: Which uni course/school/subjects cannot simply be self-learned?
This might depend on your view of the world.

As you state autodidactism, you might view knowledge as absolute and measurable. I'd posit it might not always be, and you'd miss some social aspect be that feedback to socially constructing knowledge - as well as obviously only construct knowledge within yourself and not within and among others which would be a social form of knowledge - you might not need a school for this, but by definition a form of social environment.

[Feedback as both (and also separately) an accelerant to individual learning, and choosing paths of interest, is a different thing, and perhaps also worth exploring.]

throwaway154··on Coincidentally-identical waypoint names foxed UK air traffic control system
No. It was immigrants in boats that did it. Brexit done properly would have ensured this would have never happened.
throwaway154··on Coincidentally-identical waypoint names foxed UK air traffic control system
Not a unit test problem.

Relying on it's unit tested strong systems does not make. There's a lot more to testing.

throwaway154··on Wikipedia is much deeper and nuanced than imagined
The article appears to be a beef about moderator structure and the author's perception of a Biden bias over an article they hand-picked.

The revenue and expense statement, the subject heading an entirely misleading heading given the bulk of the article is not about revenue/expenses strapped on at the end appears to have no, or at best threadbare connection to the main article other than 'politics' - well, what I had for breakfast is 'politics' too, perhaps that influences my reading of this article.

The moderator discussion and revenue/expense discussion offers nothing of substance in information of discussion over multitudes of other articles that have discussed the same thing with far more insight.

HN political flamebait, really. {Edit, thanks for the downvote.. author? That was 3 minutes. I really don't care, the account's literally called 'throwaway'. Censorship, eh?]

throwaway154··on Apple to Launch 'Low-Cost' MacBook Series Next Year to Rival Chromebooks
An international perspective, related to cited educational use -

iPads are huge in Asia for private schools. Chromebooks barely register. An additional $500 over 3 years won't register much in terms of total private education costs; I can see a role where the demand for total Apple products (applebook+iPhone+iPad+iStuff) is complimented, not substituted.

throwaway154··on Some economists have been relying on bogus population data
I read this on repec a few months ago. Interesting seeing it here.

A better title:

Economist points out some economists had been using a dodgy source; cites other economists who had pointed this out adding to literature of checking citations and a growing body of literature on checking claims in economic history in particular [editorial: as these feed into pop science years down the road]

throwaway154··on Are cooking videos making us better cooks?
One is seasoning aromatics, the second is making a more even veg coating than seasoning at the end does; stirfry vegetables at a high heat won't release water thus won't have a 'sauce' to carry seasoning across the surface, this method makes it more even.
throwaway154··on Are cooking videos making us better cooks?
The basics never end. There is no strict vertical.

When you stir-fry vegetables, salt the oil before adding the aromatics. That's basic. How many years was it until I figured that out? How many pro chefs have never figured that out? What's pro?

What about mincing your meat with one cleaver and one chef's knife? Not two cleavers. Not two chefs knives? That's basic. For a certain type of mince. How many people figure that out? It's basic once you know it. I'd bet that isn't taught in a masterclass.

There's no end to basics. There's a great chance your tomatoes don't come from the same vine as mine. Make it your own.

The reverse side is food engineering. When you're controlling for consistent results to ensure every loaf of bread of today's batches of 100,000 loaves are identical to yesterday, or last year. That's another ball game, and perfecting today's 100,000 loaves doesn't transfer much to making a pesto.

throwaway154··on A Flawed Comparison: Inequality, Ancient and Modern
It's positive to be reassured by the article that growth of wealth today is not from extraction from the population but newly created wealth creating inequality.
throwaway154··on The EU’s Digital Services Act is now in effect
Time is finite. Censorship is already in place by those that seek to use yours.

Whether this is 'better' is the debate. But that you a person is a product who's manipulation of is current is not. The new current is that of false agency.

throwaway154··on Ask HN: Are you don’t like AI and why?
Things done over the last 17 hours may have included watching 34 hours of videos featuring The Rock at x2 about the time being now.
throwaway154··on Ask HN: Are you don’t like AI and why?
That was 3 hours ago. The world is now the same place at a different time, or the same time at a different place.
throwaway154··on Ask HN: Are you don’t like AI and why?
I feel similar.

Just a feel.

Perhaps based on different priors, certainly different 'lived' experiences. Or prions. Why do yours fire that way? Can you explain it, meatpuppet? You only exist in my head, after all, as does everything. Unless there are absolutes, but they after all are givens, and if indeed you are real and so am I, then in what scope is our realness and how do we communicate that knowing, or feeling depending on truths, if not with a string of mutually understandable covenance, in this case language.

throwaway154··on AI Writing Is Dead
All while referencing PG on HN, about writing.
throwaway154··on Why are commercial airplanes still so slow?
Why don't we have slower air travel?

Eighty years ago we didn't have laptops to work from, or global connectivity. Now, we do. I'm thinking about total time, not only the travel time part.

Thinking total time, I can leave the office a day in advance as my 6 hour flight of 3000 miles now takes 20 hours. I can spend an evening in a large properly convertible chair/bed, have a stroll around the next day, perhaps enjoy the observation deck or a sit-down meal. I can have a proper day's work while on the move, watch a movie in comfort, have another sleep adjusting to timezone, and arrive at the destination in great comfort.

Instead of chasing speed, why are we not chasing that? It could be an airship. It could be a hydrofoil at sea or in waterways. It could be a train! It's a superior form of travel.

throwaway154··on Skiff – Privacy-first end-to-end encrypted email
Why not just make a front-end for PGP, have users keys publicly available, and an 'invite others' thing for those with undiscoverable keys.

That would then actually be email rather than not-email-over-smtp.

Another service delegated to trust a 3rd party isn't.

throwaway154··on Elon Musk Plans to Remove Headlines from News Article Links on Twitter/X
When running through what meta data to give in the header of a page, I found the 'twitter' stuff... kinda presumptuous(?)... that Twitter would request it's own special meta data.

But then when it was acquired by Musk I remembered I'd downloaded all their emojis, a 'just in case he pulls the plug on other stuff' thought-moment.

And now, I'm reverse-face. The twitter-card stuff is used not only by Twitter. It's a little footnote ever-bearing the rebranded name that others will find useful. So I'll continue to provide it in headers, for the evolution of Twitter that's come and will come further.

throwaway154··on Ask HN: Medium paywall popup on all articles, and do you post there?
Medium's gone the way of Quora for me; the domain has negative associative value meaning I skip anything linking there.

Let me explain the negative association:

* Popups and other pleas to make an account.

* Half hearted articles much of the time, linked to.

* Seeming a platform for self promoters with much noise but little original substance.

* That drags everything else down.

That said, I never did see it as much. I'm not much attracted to substack unless very specifically linked from another source, My association there's with people with many words that they want to shove down my inbox; people with many words that they want to shove down my inbox are also often more focused on 'readership' than sharing deeper stuff - deep is by definition harder to cognitively access than surface.

From sighting a URL I'm far more likely to go with a url I've never heard of than Medium/Substack/et al. While firstname_lastname.tld is very often a sign of quality, in my book giraffepoop.wtf is still > Medium/etc.

throwaway154··on Anyone else think tooling is getting expensive for no reason? E.g: New Relic
Firedoors in buildings are built to standards. There's standard lighting directig occupants towards a fire exit. A quota of fire exits to seats / floorspace / etc exists. Stair cases need to be of a certain width. Quite a bit more. Buildings across a country are built to these standards, and when they're not tragic things can happen.

This isn't to say all buildings are identical. Or save the same purpose. Or exist in the same climate. Or even have occupants that speak the same language. But do share a core philosophy that despite individual developers' or architects' preferences for wood or concrete, in the case of a fire a building's occupants should be provided safety.

Logs should be more like fire exits and less like fragile works of art. As I can find my way to a fire exit in hopefully any building, I should be able to deal with several .txt files.

throwaway154··on Ask HN: How would you re-design Hacker News?
https://news.ycombinator.com/favicon.ico is still there https://news.ycombinator.com/favicon.ico

https://news.ycombinator.com/y18.svg appears to be in the orange bar for me.

throwaway154··on Ask HN: How would you re-design Hacker News?
At 7KB, the favicon often makes up over 10% of total page size. At 256x256px and having only two colours, I think there's plenty of room to slim it down.

I'm also curious why HTTP/1.1 is used as it's not 1999 any more.

throwaway154··on Why your blog still needs RSS
That's stellar. It'll be sure to benefit others on the platform.
