throwaway049··on France's baby bust
The person you replied to was arguing for a smaller total population - for humans in aggregate to weigh less on the environment even if individuals weigh more.
throwaway049··on Open Airport Map
How do these peripheral airports get to name themselves in such a misleading way? 'London Oxford airport' isn't even in Oxford; locals still call it Kidlington airport.
throwaway049··on Hackers are reportedly getting laid off by organized crime groups
Not enough scammers speak Dutch? One day they'll realise they can robo call people in NL in English and be understood most of the time.
throwaway049··on You’re Not a Girlboss – You’re Just Trapped in an MLM Scheme (2020)
"people that run the course make most of their money from running the course and not from actually releasing iOS apps..."

This is so pervasive. Even in the mainstream economy where we see universities marketing courses that might seem to lead to employment but in fact are very niche with little chance of leading to a job in that specialism.

I've been looking for piano tuition recently and it's refreshing to see marketing along the lines of how much enjoyment you'll get, with potential to entertain your friends at parties.

I agree with the distinctions you've drawn. But this is hn so it's not unreasonable to make that startup comparison here, while it would be absurd if we had the same conversation on r/antimlm .
throwaway049··on Making It Legal to Play Outside: “Reasonable Childhood Independence” Bills
There's a section about poor people more likely to be victims of _stranger_ violence, which backs up your point. I didn't see much about children specifically, but I guess all other things being equal... Just such a sad thing to think about that I don't _want_ to think it unless there's hard evidence.
throwaway049··on Hundreds of changes made to latest editions of Roald Dahl's books
Steinbeck was on the English lit syllabus when I went to school in Britain in the 90s.
throwaway049··on Hundreds of changes made to latest editions of Roald Dahl's books
It's really quite difficult to lose weight and keep it off. Certainly cheaper than dentistry, but still difficult. I read a book called 'Fat Chance' that goes into the science of why it's difficult.

Museums by definition are exhibiting stuff from the past. If you want a more modern experience you go to an art gallery.
throwaway049··on Amazon Mandating 3 days back in office come May first
Wow. For contrast, central London McDonalds is paying about 10 GBP per hour for crew - which is the UK legal minimum wage and as of today equivalent to 12 USD.
throwaway049··on Amazon Mandating 3 days back in office come May first
Anyone know if they pay better than ones elsewhere? Or what other things enable them to recruit staff?
throwaway049··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
"and he knows that Zoe created it"

There's a lot of ways to share that piece of knowledge other than relying on physical proximity. Documentation, metadata, AOB in the team meeting.

throwaway049··on Where do stolen bikes go?
I take cheap to mean stolen in this case.
throwaway049··on Where do stolen bikes go?
I think he intended to be a good citizen by leading the police to some bike thieves.
throwaway049··on Airbnb nightly rates shot up 36% in 3 years
Commercial lenders are free to lend at higher rates. What do you mean by 'government imposed'?
throwaway049··on Ask HN: How do ADHD people cope on here?
I accept that I'm not a polymath or genius. But I used to think I was supposed to be keeping up with everything in every field.
throwaway049··on If we all cycled like the Dutch, global emissions would drop 700M tonnes
Or, for quite a lot of Europeans on here, the 1850s and 60s
throwaway049··on If we all cycled like the Dutch, global emissions would drop 700M tonnes
They may also have safer jobs with less exposure to carcinogens. Heavy industry jobs are often located beyond a reasonable cycle commute from people's homes.
throwaway049··on Investigation on the effect of oral breathing on cognitive activity (2021)
I'd settle for a higher quality of debate on hn. I can get low effort sneering just about anywhere else.
throwaway049··on Scheduled to Die: The Rise of Canada’s Assisted Suicide Program
Or to put that another way, other people have to take risks that they are unhappy with in other to satisfy your risk preference and requirement for restaurant service etc.
throwaway049··on Scheduled to Die: The Rise of Canada’s Assisted Suicide Program
In a thread about moral choices I think it's notable that some people who wished to isolate and minimize their risk of disease were not financially able to do so. Their choice, though frustrated, would be just as valid as those who preferred to choose to take a risk.
throwaway049··on Scheduled to Die: The Rise of Canada’s Assisted Suicide Program
Going to be difficult to build a brand on customer reviews though.
throwaway049··on Scheduled to Die: The Rise of Canada’s Assisted Suicide Program
Coming from the far right, are you in favor of assisted suicide for people who cannot support themselves but are not terminally ill?
throwaway049··on Scheduled to Die: The Rise of Canada’s Assisted Suicide Program
Thank you for pointing this out. In the UK the newspaper and TV rarely place our healthcare crisis in a wider context.

I'm in favor of the right to access a painless assisted death, but society should be able to make a better offer to anyone who is not terminally ill.

throwaway049··on It’s not Tourette’s but a new type of mass sociogenic illness
Sometimes they are doing exactly that

throwaway049··on It’s not Tourette’s but a new type of mass sociogenic illness
'The last several decades' is an odd specification. Are you saying there was a point in the quite recent past when this was different?
throwaway049··on France bans short haul domestic flights in favour of train travel
No. It's not good. It enables the rich to travel while locking out others. A fair system would ration access to a scarce resource based on need.
throwaway049··on France bans short haul domestic flights in favour of train travel
I'd argue that not pricing in the negative externalities of flying amounts to a subsidy.
throwaway049··on France bans short haul domestic flights in favour of train travel
"slightly more expensive"

Reminds me of Caroline Lucas, when asked about her air travel, saying there should be a focus on taxing aviation fuel.

What this all amounts to is travel should be restricted to the wealthy.

throwaway049··on Britain is sleepwalking into censorship?
Odd example. No case went to court.
