throwaway0094··on I will not hack on your codebase for free in an interview
That's fine. We'll try to evaluate your abilities in some other way, with the initial impression that you're a prick. :-/

A day is a pretty unreasonable request. Maybe an hour would be more reasonable?

throwaway0094··on Intel i7 loop performance anomaly
Similar effects on a Haswell-era Xeon 1240v3:

throwaway0094··on Seeing the Toll, Schools Revise Zero Tolerance
Yeah. I landed on the privileged end of this. I think my white privilege saved my ass in highschool.
throwaway0094··on Seeing the Toll, Schools Revise Zero Tolerance
I was suspended multiple times in middle school ("hacking" -- nothing had restricted permissions back in those days) and high school for being stupid and mouthing off to a teacher who wasn't going as fast as I wanted.

I took all of the math available at my local community college ("advanced" calculus, differential equations) in sophomore and junior years of highschool, took AP CS AB senior year, got a 5 on a number of AP exams (CS AB, Chemistry, ...), graduated HS with a 3.9 (of 4.0).

I am really lucky to have had a principal who was able to see past my immature behavior and strike the suspensions from my record for college applications.

As a result I was directly admitted into the CS program at the U of Washington (semi-uncommon), finished undergrad in 2⅓ years, and graduated cum laude with a ~3.85 (of 4.0).

Now I work at an amazing software company hacking on a really cool operating system. I can't imagine I would be in the same place making the same kind of $$$ if a zero-tolerance policy had applied at any point during my K-12 education.

throwaway0094··on Go Advent Day 2: Performance Improvements in Go 1.2
Wikipedia says "Intel 64" is the new official name, but yeah, IA-64 looks wrong. Sorry. IA-64 feels like it should be the 64-bit-ified IA-32, but no...

Hard problems in CS: Naming things.

throwaway0094··on An Open Letter To Customers
What security? Their crypto was shitty. Has it gotten better?
throwaway0094··on Show HN: I built a live Bitcoin price aggregator with multiple indexes
It is impossible to withdraw USD from MtGox.
throwaway0094··on Go Advent Day 2: Performance Improvements in Go 1.2
True. I would expect IA-64 chips to benchmark differently from AMD's amd64 chips, though. Would be interesting to see them (the percentage changes for each arch, relative to 1.1) side-by-side.
throwaway0094··on Sheep Marketplace closes after theft of £3m in bitcoins
Owner has been doxed? Link?
throwaway0094··on Computer-driven cars will convulse the automotive industry
I don't think liability insurance on motorcycles goes up very much. You still can't cause too much damage to a car, even if a human driver is much more likely to crash than computer.
throwaway0094··on Japanese 'Prince' Switched At Birth Was Raised A Pauper
Vertebrates.
throwaway0094··on In Silicon Valley, Partying Like It’s 1999 Again
More like rebalancing your portfolio as you notice one sector getting overvalued re: your expectations.
throwaway0094··on 100 Prisoners and a Lamp
It depends on the disease, doesn't it? At this point (for some diseases) it's much more cost-effective to kill the patient that would have gone towards prolonging a state of suffering. Then send the funds towards Against Malaria or something else. ;-)
throwaway0094··on 100 Prisoners and a Lamp
Give everyone a unique number during the planning phase. Have everyone scratch their number into the wall. Leave the light on.

When all numbers are on the wall, you are done.

throwaway0094··on New antibiotic kills off persistent infections

Now available in hand-soap.

throwaway0094··on Modelling a Basic Income with Python and Monte Carlo Simulation
Those five hours are an outlier.
throwaway0094··on The Guardian’s bogus claim about money, long commutes, and life satisfaction
Well, not everyone earns the average income (obviously). So the percentage is wrong for everyone.
throwaway0094··on You are not a software engineer (2011)
Dismissing all other organizations as worse at "gardening" than Google was a bit offensive.

And the lowest bidder for contracted work often sucks, or finds ways to bill more than the original bid. :)

throwaway0094··on Poll: How many Bitcoin do you own?
No idea how well they do.
throwaway0094··on Row over US mobile phone 'cockroach backpack' app
This type of cockroach control is pretty par for the course in undergrad anatomy lab sections... I think the only part that seems weird is the gamification of making it a remote control app.
throwaway0094··on Poll: How many Bitcoin do you own?
Yep. Some of my co-workers do algorithmic trading as a hobby.
throwaway0094··on Valgrind Release 3.9.0
AddressSanitizer went into GCC 4.8 recently: http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.8/changes.html
throwaway0094··on The Monster Truck Madness 2 site is unchanged from 1998
Yeah, I immediately thought of that too. I've been to that webpage in the past 1-2 years, it's a game I used to play with friends every once in a while.
throwaway0094··on Valgrind Release 3.9.0
Valgrind's emulation environment wraps syscalls to understand how they read/modify memory. Any time you add a new syscall or change an existing syscall, valgrind needs to be updated. Presumably 10.9 is unsupported due to new/modified syscalls; a basic program using a subset of POSIX standard syscalls may work just fine under valgrind on 10.9.

Apple should probably employ someone full-time to support valgrind on OS X, just for the in-house benefits...

throwaway0094··on DC Police Department monitors gunshots with acoustic rooftop sensors
These systems are pretty good at detecting fire crackers and backfiring cars. E.g., check out this recent map of results:

http://www.minneapolismn.gov/www/groups/public/@mpd/document...

Only a few of those points are actually shootings.

throwaway0094··on The Driverless Car Revolution Should Not Begin with Cars
I don't know which commercial truck drivers you've observed, but anecdotally, I've seen some pretty distracted / inattentive behavior from truck drivers myself.

Are you suggesting that truck drivers are somehow ubermensch who can stare at highway for 16 hours without getting drowsy or losing focus? Automated trucks can drive with perfect attention 24/7.

That being said, I disagree with the article -- trucks take longer to stop, are harder to navigate in constrained spaces, and have higher stakes than personal cars. I wonder how difficult it would be to rob automated trucks by simply slowing down to a stop in front of them, for example.

throwaway0094··on Are You A Typing Hacker? Prove It
Normal.
throwaway0094··on Rot8000 – Rot13 for the Unicode generation
rot13 is (X + (26/2)) mod 26 ; this is (X + (2^16)/2) mod 2^16. (The BMP is the first 2^16 code points of unicode.)

Edit: silly formatting dropped my math punctuation.

throwaway0094··on Are You A Typing Hacker? Prove It
Wave 35, score of 4098. Needed to get harder faster. Waves ~25+ were difficult.

Criticism: Overlapping words make it hard to read. The font makes it hard to distinguish i, t, l, j, which is bad when you need to determine which to type quickly.

Accidentally mistyping the first letter of the wrong word locks you on to some rando object; my own failing, but, an unlock button (backspace?) would be nice.

throwaway0094··on Show HN: Game where you write Python robots to fight other players
Seattle[1] includes an attempt to sandbox Python. No idea if it's 100% covered, but they try.
