throwaway-blaze··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
IRA contributions are drastically limited to a $7000 cap per year under 50. Whether they should be is another question, and one worth exploring.

Long-term investment is rightly seen as something to be encouraged hence the lower tax rates. You can make the argument that the rate should be more like 0% since the money invested and risked was already taxed most likely...20% is a reasonable value for the market regulating infrastructure provided by gov't entities.

Assume you think the government is in a better position to spend that billion than the billionaire is to figure out what to buy or invest their money in?

I know he's out of favor with a lot of people, but would Elon have created SpaceX or The Boring Co or Neuralink, or helped start OpenAI if he hadn't had the spare billions to do so?

I'd much rather have multi-billionaires investing in the economy, and in the future, than giving additional money to the government.

throwaway-blaze··on A recent study suggests that insects branched out from crustaceans
Please point us at the land-bugs with a taste profile like shrimp / lobster / crab / other edible crustaceans enjoyed by humans.
throwaway-blaze··on Ask HN: Has anyone quit their startup (VC-backed) over cofounder disagreements?
And just because they raised doesn't mean they're in a successful niche, just that they convinced people to write a check to invest...
throwaway-blaze··on The Agent2Agent Protocol (A2A)
Sort of like asking a non-deterministic human to help make changes to an existing computer system. Extends the problems of human team management to our technology systems.
throwaway-blaze··on SignalBotOne – Notification Webhooks for Signal
Maybe I'm just dense but is there a sample curl somewhere for how to send something to the API URL I just got in my signal chat with BotMaster.1000?
throwaway-blaze··on Things I would have told myself before building an autorouter
I was this many days old when I learned the word "imbricated".
throwaway-blaze··on My 16-month theanine self-experiment
Since no one has mentioned it yet, given the author felt like Japanese tea was providing a calming / anti-anxiety effect but with a much lower potential dose of Theanine....I wonder what would happen if he repeated the experiment with a sub-lingual dosing mechanism?

It seems like this would be closer to taking the tea in your mouth and savoring it over multiple sips across a few minutes, and could explain the smaller apparent dose having an effect (some of the Theanine goes straight into the bloodstream and bypasses the digestive tract).

throwaway-blaze··on 2025 Hiring Pause
Not mentioned -- Cornell has an $11bn endowment that can be tapped to make up some of the shortfall. Any issues with Federal funding will be hurting smaller schools and schools with smaller endowments way before hurting Cornell.
throwaway-blaze··on Carlos Slim cancels his collaboration with Elon Musk's Starlink
The rise of Hitler was noticed and minimized by even the most plugged-in governments and leaders. The UK was led by a chap who thought he could mollify him by just giving him parts of Central Europe. You can call Chamberlain many names but "uninformed" isn't one.

I like the description earlier in the thread of "the carnival". You can leave at any time and your life and dopamine will be the better for it.

throwaway-blaze··on DARPA solicitation for the Active Social Engineering Defense program (2017)
To be fair, Thomson Reuters is a huge company, with the Reuters news division being only one of the groups within. This may not be anything but a clickbaity title on a grant.

This kerfuffle could be quickly solved if Thomson Reuters published their grant proposal as submitted to and selected by DARPA for this program.

throwaway-blaze··on The FAA’s Hiring Scandal
The problem here is that the notion that "DEI is just a loose label for having less discrimination in the workforce" is always hidden behind by people who want to use it for more forceful discrimination.

It would serve those who truly just want to make sure our society all starts from the same starting line to come up with a new term, one that encompasses meritocracy as the goal along with generous helping hands along the way (training programs, tutoring programs, outside-the-class mentorship opportunities). And to focus on helping lower _class and income_ folks get a leg up, not on including or excluding people by characteristics that are a circumstance of birth (skin color).

throwaway-blaze··on Apple will soon receive 'made in America' chips from TSMC's Arizona fab
In the case of invasion, the equipment within the TSMC factories will be affirmatively destroyed / sabotaged to the extent that it can't be used or studied.
throwaway-blaze··on Apple will soon receive 'made in America' chips from TSMC's Arizona fab
China invading Taiwan seems a ton more likely than China lobbing missiles into Arizona.
throwaway-blaze··on Apple will soon receive 'made in America' chips from TSMC's Arizona fab
You can't really be this obtuse. Asylum of high-skilled silicon workers from an ally under invasion isn't nearly the same thing as the asylum being granted over the last 4 years to anyone who could download the CBP One app.

Trump is inviting Xi as a troll / show of power.

They'll be flown from the US to Taiwan for packaging, at least until packaging services exist here. Then they'll be flown to China, Southeast Asia, India, or possibly Brazil for final assembly into an iPhone or computer, at least until lower cost assembly plants are built here or someplace cheaper like Mexico.
throwaway-blaze··on Researchers design wearable tech that can sense glucose levels more accurately
Not T1 or T2 but wore CGM patches for a month. Amazing insight into how your body reacts to foods and food + exercise. Even if this tech isn't accurate enough at first for people who need to manage a disease, it could be amazing for anyone interested in health optimization.

throwaway-blaze··on Show HN: OwlEars – Raw feedback, straight from your customers' minds
This is super cool, but I think your landing page could really benefit from a screenshot of the tool in use...I honestly couldn't tell you what it did just from reading the page.

Also, to build a great landing page, communicate the "Why" as in why I want it as a customer, and less of "what" I'm getting ("AI Insights!", "Hassle Free!"). Tell me why this product will make my business or project better.

throwaway-blaze··on Learning not to trust the All-In podcast
You must not read lefty X / Twitter where they're wondering where 15mm voters went from last time.
throwaway-blaze··on Learning not to trust the All-In podcast
It's free if you're below a certain income threshold / qualify for aid programs like SNAP etc.

As an aside, I do agree it's crazy to be nickel-and-dimed for things by gov't agencies that my tax dollars have already funded.

throwaway-blaze··on Learning not to trust the All-In podcast
You really think poor people and minorities don't have IDs? They must never interact with any form of government or finance that ever needs an ID.

This is a massive trope some people bring up all the time. Please show credible data that this is true and I'll happily admit I'm wrong.

throwaway-blaze··on Learning not to trust the All-In podcast
You can say you don't care for Elon for a thousand reasons, but you lose credibility if you call the guy who is leading multiple companies that are crushing it in their respective fields an "incompetent fraud".
throwaway-blaze··on A camera in the East Village, capturing the now and the long ago
This. It works great for the few people who get into the system when it starts but it disincentivizes landlords from taking care of the building, and certainly from any major renovations, or from investing in new housing...
throwaway-blaze··on Using AI to fight insurance claim denials
The weirdest thing about health insurance in the US is how tied it is to employment, Obamacare helped a little with this. The second weirdest thing is that insurance companies can't offer more tightly defined plans for, say, young people who never go to the doctor except for critical/emergency care vs me who goes a couple times a year for various things. Obamacare did not help with this, at all.
throwaway-blaze··on macOS in QEMU in Docker
They're using it as a shelf.
throwaway-blaze··on Re: Supreme Court's Loper decision: offer some thought someone who has litigated
Name a single court that hasn't made important decisions. You might not like the Roberts court and even disagree with its majority, but it operates no differently from any that has come before.

What is different now is an explicit push to constantly highlight the supposed leanings of the members...but to do that you have to completely ignore the 7-2 and unanimous decisions they have come to just this session...

throwaway-blaze··on Is Clear Air Turbulence becoming more common?
Well, you have to have paperwork claiming it was installed correctly. You don't _have_ to install it correctly. See e.g. doors installed so correctly that they blow out in flight etc.
throwaway-blaze··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
The problem here is that the EU law is "whatever the bureaucrats say it is". The DMA rules are not specific enough for Apple or anyone to know a priori if a feature or product is going to cross the line. Thus Apple is now announcing new features won't immediately be available to EU customers.

We should all want more competition but I'm not convinced "because the unelected technocrat in Brussels said so" is the way to do it.

throwaway-blaze··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
They already do, you can't survive in ecommerce without google ads.
