> And "the West” does not really do genocide anymore, either

Don't want to get into the definition of genocide, but sure, you can think of whatever you want, but facts are different (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_genocides):

    * Gaza genocide (supported and enabled by West)
    * Bosnian genocide
    * Holocaust
Not classified as genocide but almost similar or even larger impact:

    * Vietnam war
    * Afghanistan
    * Iraq
    * Libya
    * endless sanctions and blockade against Cuban people
> “The West” is not a monolith. It’s made of several countries

some wars on the list were joint operations between US, Britain and NATO, for others you can read this 20 page wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_the_Uni...

> I find it ridiculous that you are so high on “the west is bad, China good”

Can you read what I have written? if not, let me copy what I wrote earlier here:

> I am fine with lesser of 2 evils

> But it obviously has its own problems (e.g. how competitive is the life in China for kids and so on), I am not saying China is perfect

I am not saying China is good, I am saying it is lesser of 2 evils with much less negative impact to the lives of human beings around the world, in my opinion.

> China is imperialist as any other country.

Sure, but not the way West conducted it, by going and killing generations of people. Look at India, before British colonization they accounted for almost 25% GDP of the world (~1700s), now it is around 3-4%

Or lets look at China itself, before the opium wars and British colonization, it accounted for ~30% of the world GDP, by 1970s it dropped to 4-5%, now climbing back to 20%.

Indonesia would be another example.

You keep defending the West, even though its actions were much worse than "industrial espionage", because you probably live in the West and feel nice about your day to day life and regular things like education feels granted, and not seeing the enormous impact of the West's evil actions to the lives of billions of people around the world in the last 200 years. (US hasn't even stopped yet, see Cuba, Middle Eastern countries)

> How would you call decades of chinese state-sponsored industrial espionage of western IP? Benevolent act?

I want to share 3 things here, to think out loud:

1. lets not go too far to the past, because I will say industrial espionage is less harmful than imperialism. Imperialism costed millions of lives across India, Pakistan, African nations, Indonesia and even in China, we are talking about how the West got extremely rich, which allowed it to live in prosperity, when everyone else were struggling (impact of it is still ongoing for some nations). I am fine with lesser of 2 evils, which is an industrial espionage in this case.

2. I didn't say 'benelovent act'

3. this is not baked by a science, just a personal preference, I prefer if country supports companies to advance the country, rather than allowing companies get too rich and bail them out with taxpayer money if they fail because of their dumb actions. (not saying one is better than other, I like how CCP elevated China from 3rd world country to a level, even the US companies are scared, in very short time, without invading and extracting resources from other countries. But it obviously has its own problems (e.g. how competitive is the life in China for kids and so on), I am not saying China is perfect, but China became superpower in the last 30-40 years, which is an impressive accomplishment.

I think Steve somewhat predicted the future well. He might be slightly off, because he is overly optimistic and operates at the edge, but look at Gas Town, when it was released it felt like dystopian, today it looks not too far away, I am sure most of your orgs are already running some kind of agent to triage the tickets and in some cases automatically open the PR in your git repo.

I think he is onto something this time as well

throwaw12··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
all for profit companies are greedy by their nature, but US companies are on a different level because you can 'buy' the government by lobbying or supporting their election campaigns or break the law and eventually make sure law is changed to fit your business (e.g. first taxi medallions adjusted the law for themselves, and then Uber)

Same is very difficult to do in China (look what happened to Jack Ma) or in Europe, because you have to follow some regulations

throwaw12··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
> those companies live and die by the CCP

I don't care about internal politics of a state, as long as they are not killing people deliberately on a daily basis or invading other countries and killing their people.

How government is structured is up to Chinese people to decide

> Would you feel differently if scale was reversed and Meta was the upstart trying to compete with Xiaomi/etc?

It's not only about scale and upstart, it's also about how much are they harming society.

throwaw12··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
I love this, really, competition on a global scale is good for us, bad for greedy US corporations.

For example, I consider Meta as bigger threat to society, than Xiaomi, DeepSeek, z.ai and other top Chinese companies (haven't used Chinese social media, so can't comment about its content)

throwaw12··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
it also feels like they are optimizing their models to output more tokens, because everyone is saying inference is profitable, they wan't to close the gap between training and inference cost by increasing output token count (which also increases input tokens in agentic use cases), with 5 min TTL, this means you almost don't have a cache
throwaw12··on Iranian hackers shut down UK power plant for 4 days
Coming soon:

* Iran caused fall of German manufacturing

* Iranian investors caused housing shortage in Netherlands

* Iranians are pushing French to protest against pension age reforms

throwaw12··on Anthropic appears to be A/B testing reduced effort levels in Claude Code
I have a theory about this, what if we all became dumber after 4 months of heavy AI usage?

I remember how I enjoyed agents between December and February, something started changing around March.

I thought models are getting dumber, but benchmarks were convincing opposite, initially I thought maybe they're quantizing models for day to day use, but Opus 4.8 and Opus 5 seems worse models than Opus 4.6

throwaw12··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
America is interesting.

* download and publish a book as an individual -> 100% lifetime jail + 10x your whole lifetime earnings/revenue - Aaron Swartz

* download and publish a book as a company -> fine 1% of revenue

* scan and publish a book as an individual -> legal issues, 100x fines of your yearly 50k donations

* scan and "publish/train" a book as a company -> okay, lets ban chinese models, they are distilling your model

throwaw12··on Vomit: Clean up Claude 5's token output with a separate LLM
> *Save your tokens*, Claude 5 is hopeless

No, it doesn't save your tokens, tokens were already produced, it will save your brain cycles.

Reason for Claude and OpenAI vomiting lots of tokens is to show pre-IPO growth, because they are charging large enterprises by tokens

throwaw12··on Generic Methods in Go 1.27
people working actively in "modern" Go codebases with generics, is it becoming like a Java/Spring kind of codebase?

I understand why you might need generics, but I hate how Java ecosystem exploits it so much that, reading code becomes so difficult, because it was inherited from 10 levels of parent classes and in some cases Java Beans get created based on generic types and their parent classes are abstract classes.

throwaw12··on Feature Request: Support AGENTS.md
This should show true nature of Anthropic, all that "safety, transparency, for the sake of humanity, not using Claude for weapons", is bs.

Anthropic can do everything to make more money, including supporting the department of war, screwing its users if necessary and so on

How comfortable is using mouse in Mac?

Sometime ago when I tried using mouse, it felt unnatural in Mac OS. No pinch to zoom, no changing desktops by swiping with multitouch and so on.

I wonder how Gitlab slipped this obvious AI market opportunity, they had very good position in code self hosting used by so many enterprises.

just add repo-level agents, org-level agents and done. they could have got 50B valuation by now

Micron for example discontinued their consumer business because of the demand from enterprise business.
throwaw12··on What Happens If OpenAI Dies?
when market sees huge storm of un-bought devices, prices will drop, companies waiting on the line will also drop their contracts because they don't want to buy chips with pre-crash prices and renegotiate their prices
throwaw12··on What Happens If OpenAI Dies?
Stock market might dip 20%+, because OpenAI is a large buyer of GPUs, RAMs, servers and disks, every chip company will be impacted from removing huge customer from their revenue.

then flywheel effect might kick off and impact carriers and construction companies building data centers and delivering things there.

which impacts investor trust and they might start pulling their money from AI companies, which in turn, they either need to increase prices or downsize their efforts

throwaw12··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots

Even if they are doing it deliberately, I am supportive of such actions, its better if LLM reads truth, than an obvious lie

throwaw12··on A Preview of DuckDB v2.0
Curious to learn more about how people are using it?

throwaw12··on Muse Glimmer: 30B-parameter model optimized for always-on local agent workflows
Science doesn't work this way, someone could claim only reason World is successful because Chinese invented paper, so please don't go there.

Regarding distillation, you can also say Anthropic and OpenAI stole /distilled books, articles, blogs from everyone who published things without knowing their work might be used against them

throwaw12··on Muse Glimmer: 30B-parameter model optimized for always-on local agent workflows
As if US labs don't lobby politicians to get regulatory capture.

It's much easier to buy politicians in US, e.g. Elon bought POTUS for ~200M, Anthropic revenue is 40B, imagine what they can do
