throwaheyy··on Housing should be affordable except for when I sell my house for $1M
GP is talking about housing appreciation in excess of inflation — the terms they used “real return” and “purchasing power” are specific economic terms that mean inflation-adjusted rate of return or price levels respectively.
throwaheyy··on Artist refuses prize after his AI image wins at top photo contest
Not sure why you’re getting downvotes, your post is completely spot on.

That a professional jury awarded the prize to an AI-generated image is proof that AI has reached a good enough level to fool a trained eye.

To come later, with prior knowledge that it was AI-generated, point out “tells” and generally armchair-quarterback the process, proves absolutely nothing about the jury’s competence.

throwaheyy··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
I work at Microsoft. This shit, along with “shopping toolbars” and “BNPL” in the Edge browser, is frankly embarrassing.
throwaheyy··on Coinbase issued Wells notice by SEC
Isn’t this pretty standard among developed countries and not unique to the US?

I don’t think, to reverse the example, that US companies can offer investments to Australians without an AFSL or without oversight by ASIC or APRA.

It’s entirely possible the propeller would be not damaged by rain but would still be damaged by a much larger “glob” of fuel.
throwaheyy··on Brex Devalues Rewards
Capital One actually got better — they used to be 2:1.5 before improving to 1:1, as well as adding more transfer options.
throwaheyy··on Brex Devalues Rewards
Yes. It would just be a constant in the code somewhere.
throwaheyy··on Future Fords could repossess themselves and drive away if you miss payments

throwaheyy··on The case for hanging out
I’m quite sure those clubs are focused around community activity and do not restrict membership by a member’s political alignment or religion.

Clubs that do revolve around members’ politics and identity, honestly aren’t all that much fun.

throwaheyy··on Health concerns grow in East Palestine, Ohio, after train derailment
That amount of hydrochloric acid doesn't just magically dilute evenly into the water table in one instant.
throwaheyy··on United flight from Hawaii plunged to within 800ft of Pacific Ocean
No. In flight you are subject to variable G-forces so you can't know that you are moving in the way that you "feel" you are moving.
throwaheyy··on Record levels of sadness in teen girls, CDC reports
No. The average social media consumer isn’t that deep.
throwaheyy··on Microsoft Outlook has begun serving me ads that look like emails
Microsoft themselves have named it Outlook. Not "Outlook on mobile".
throwaheyy··on IRS Free File: Do Your Taxes for Free
The desktop app I’m thinking of was called “e-Tax”. More recently you could complete your return through the MyGov website with all data pre-populated. Perhaps there was a transition period where they were still using e-Tax but also could pre-populate the data. But before that, you still had to fill it all in from paper forms.

It’s a while since I’ve had to complete an Australian tax return.

throwaheyy··on How to Be 18 Years Old Again for Only $2M a Year
I think they really meant hectomillionaire?

“Centi” means one hundredth. In other words he is worth in the order of $10,000.

throwaheyy··on Microsoft Azure Outage
Nah I just set up a 2nd browser profile, and they both stay signed in. It’s a breeze.
throwaheyy··on IRS Free File: Do Your Taxes for Free
I think this is relatively new. 10 or so years ago you still had to download a desktop app that looked like it was written in 1995 and go through each page.
throwaheyy··on Microsoft to lay off 11k employees
Wow, that’s shitty. Because you could simply have taken the same time off under unlimited PTO as by burning down the accrual, the company effectively zeroed out accrued vacation time. I’d be pissed that happened to me.
throwaheyy··on Flip Phones: Gen Z has a new ‘vintage’ technology to obsess over
I think those “consumer itches” probably stemmed from 1990s American action movies in which the original of this style of phone (Motorola MicroTac I think?) seems to be almost universally used.
throwaheyy··on Distributing Mac apps outside the App Store, a quick start guide (2021)
This is not really the case for mass market consumer goods (like the cereal example in your post). Safeway and Kroger are a duopoly not far off of Apple’s app store monopoly and if you don’t like their terms, there aren’t exactly alternative viable channels for your cereal.
throwaheyy··on The 'buy now, pay later' bubble is about to burst
This applies to more than just banking. They were the first to innovate. Thus they get stuck with first generation technology while other countries leapfrog ahead.

Example: back in 2009 I got an American Express card with contactless technology. It was one of the transparent cards with the blue square in the middle so you could see it right inside the card. Problem was, no store had a terminal it could be used with. After a few years, Amex gave up on it and my new cards didn’t have it. Meanwhile the rest of the world is starting to roll it out. After a few more years (last 4-5 years) cards finally got contactless again, after the rest of the world had had it for years.

throwaheyy··on New video of Tesla crash demonstrates the problem of semi-automated driving
No, it wouldn’t in a breakdown situation in any other car, the driver would try to pull over to the right.

Most drivers gain an instinct to passing slower/stopped objects on the left, and a natural aversion to passing them on the right.

The Tesla pulled over and stopped in the far left lane. No “space” was left to pass it.

throwaheyy··on Widening highways doesn’t fix traffic
My point was that improvements ultimately are futile because there are practical limits on how wide you can make a highway.
throwaheyy··on Widening highways doesn’t fix traffic
Ok, maybe it involves stringing up a new cable, onto poles already carrying many cables. That’s not even close to being comparable to widening highways.
throwaheyy··on There is no software maintenance
If there’s one silver lining from the Great Southwest Airlines Meltdown of 2022, it’s that software engineers will have a good and memorable concrete example to point to, when non-technical management or users question whether software/IT process maintenance is “really” necessary.
throwaheyy··on Widening highways doesn’t fix traffic
Poor analogy. More bandwidth does not occupy more physical space. Wider highways, very much so, to the point of producing an environment hostile to peaceful living, more noise and pollution, barriers to walking and nature etc.
throwaheyy··on Alameda wallets become active days after SBF bail, community mulls foul play
Why is that suspicious? A more likely explanation is that the authorities had what they needed to take him in, and they wanted first crack at questioning him before he had the chance to stage a dog-and-pony show in front of congress.
throwaheyy··on Facebook addiction increases depression severity among already depressed people
Doubt it. TV commercials encourage you to relate to or see yourself as the person in the commercial. The advertisers want to invoke a positive feeling and identification in hopes you’ll buy the product. The message is “you can have this life too”.

Social media is just pure individualistic ego-stroking by comparison. The message is “my life is better than yours”.

YOLOing into HOOD was peak 2021.
throwaheyy··on Indian tech workers in Silicon Valley protest immigration discrimination
Relinquishing your residency isn’t the same as a visa expiring. Visas are always time limited, PR is literally permanent unless you commit a crime or live overseas long enough to let it expire.

You get into the US without a visa by having a green card instead.
