throw_m239339··on Meta Blocks President Lula's Facebook Page, Campaign Ads 2 Weeks from Election
Right, don't ban them that's bad for free speech, just impose huge fines on Facebook to bankrupt them.
throw_m239339··on Is A.I. Above the Law?
Whoever wrote that article doesn't understand that these agents operate from AI companies servers and aren't rogue, they are doing exactly what they were programmed for. If they cause any sort of damage then at the minimum it's civil or criminal negligence. A subpoena for internal communications during legal proceedings might demonstrate that researchers knew about the risks, but went forward with that anyway, which would be more than negligence...
throw_m239339··on Elektron Machinedrum in the Browser
Someone made VST versions of both the Machinedrum and the Monomachine, after doing the Virus series, the JP8000, the Supernova...

so people can have all these at home without the hardware, if they manage to find the original OS online AND have a computer powerful enough to run all these... they are emulations of the original devices...

But in theory, someone could make hardware bootleg versions of all these devices...

throw_m239339··on Amazon refused to give pregnant workers bathroom breaks
*slaves do. Amazon big shots must be laughing at these people who have no choice but to accept these work conditions to make ends meet, so hard. They must talk about these people like they are garbage, peasants, when Amazon yuppies are among themselves...

That's what shocked me the most when I was doing odd jobs, the contempt, the disdain.

throw_m239339··on AI models ran real businesses: They sent $12,431 in fake invoices, lost $3,200
It's fraud, and wire fraud in US, and it's a federal crime. But yeah, it sounds like a fake story.
throw_m239339··on The Rust React Compiler is now native in Vite
But bad performances stems from non compiler optimized React to begin with, its execution model when handwritten. Other frameworks don't necessarily take more effort to use and have better performances from the get go.
throw_m239339··on The Rust React Compiler is now native in Vite
*React. Nobody is forced to use React to write web UI though. Actually, in theory, AI helps getting rid of all these web frameworks, they are tools for made developers, LLM don't need React to code a web UI, they can use Vanilla DOM or faster frameworks, like SolidJS.
throw_m239339··on The Rust React Compiler is now native in Vite
Hand written React code is relatively slow when running so the React team made a React compiler to make it run faster. You might not see the difference with a toy app, but with a fairly large app, with a lot of IO it's a catastrophe if not compiled and optimized.

It's the definition of overengineering IMHO. The problem is React at first place. Some other frameworks have in theory no compilation or optimization step while delivering constant performance as the app grows, like SolidJS. Since writing a compiler in JS also make compilation itself slow, then the React compiler was re-written in Rust...

At the end of the day, React has a larger community and ecosystem so it's the industry "standard" for JS applications...

throw_m239339··on Google AI Mode shows same products 21.6% more expensive than traditional search
That site exists in my country but under a different name (the UI is exactly the same so I imagine it's the same company). It's OK, but their search engine is mediocre. You look for Smartphone deals and they show you bananas... this is the very thing that shouldn't happen on a site like that. It means that whatever algorithm they use isn't very sophisticated.
throw_m239339··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
> which ought to absolve you of liability

Criminal liability perhaps, not civil liability which has a way lower bar when it comes to conviction...

But in essence, you're right, that new "AI agent paradigm" has to be tried in court and it will, as I doubt the legislator will change existing laws...

> The first time it bites somebody, you may not be liable because you didn't know the dog was dangerous

Is it the case though? If I get a lion or a tiger as a pet (I don't know if it's legal), there is a reasonable assumption that a lion is dangerous for me and others... If I get a rottweiler, there is a reasonable assumption for that sort of breed that it is a dangerous dog if it ever end up killing someone even though it behaved before...

throw_m239339··on Google AI Mode shows same products 21.6% more expensive than traditional search
It's crazy how getting the best deals online is still a unsolved problem. Google product page was garbage even before AI, most aggregators are a complete farce as well, either displaying deals that are out of date or completely unrelated items, and let's not even get started with price tracking...

You'd think of all the companies, Google would be the best one to come up with a good solution for deal hunting but no...

I guess it's in no company's interest for consumers to get the best deals...

throw_m239339··on 120 days until Google restricts side-loading, declaring war on Android freedom
EU regulations do not require that, that's bullshit. Otherwise Microsoft and Apple would do the same and completely restrict what one can install on their laptop (Microsoft tried to force people to go through their store on Windows Family versions though, I'm glad they failed).
throw_m239339··on 120 days until Google restricts side-loading, declaring war on Android freedom
The only reason I chose Android was being able to install my own "native" apps without Google having a say. If that function is gone, I simply have no reason to use Android, I actually like IOS better in terms of UI, so I'll just move to Apple's ecosystem...

While using alternative OS on older Android devices.

throw_m239339··on Secondhand book sales are booming. Is it because of AI?

throw_m239339··on Show HN: Ante, a coding agent in a single binary that runs offline
> That's like saying you aren't building a house if you use a hammer to drive nails instead of your hand. AI is just a tool like any other, and you use it to build things like you would any other tool.

A coding agent is more like a carpenter, a mason, an electrician,... rather than a hammer in that case.

throw_m239339··on Denmark Requires Oral Defenses for Students' Written Work to Counter AI Cheating
Well that's part of the issue with for profit education, if the student pays significant money for tuition, is he a customer or a student?
throw_m239339··on Should AI labs be treated like the owners of dangerous animals?
I never understood why would these labs disclose such crimes, because hacking is a federal crime, and admit some sort of fault in public which would be used as evidence in a court of law against them, unless it's all bullishit and a publicity stunt...
throw_m239339··on Golang proposal: container/: generic collection types
Nothing wrong with J2EE back then if you were building a certain kind of entreprise application. EJBeans actually took care about a lot of business complexity for a n-tier application, it's just that the whole XML crap was absolutely egregious.

Go can barely parse an XML document natively so don't worry about G2EE I'd say...

I'm more worried about what have become of professional Javascript serverside these days, it's just nuts how people have managed to make it as complex as J2EE... Nextjs, Typescript,JSX, React, compilers, transpilers, ... and none of that stuff solves enterprise business logic...

throw_m239339··on I Inspected My Take-Home Interview Project. It Was a Whole Operation

throw_m239339··on Woman in Brazil enslaved for 55 years by 3 generations of the same family
You'd be shocked how much of our "friends" in MENA still have legal slavery for non citizens. When an employer can legally confiscate someone's passport and one can only leave the country with their authorization, it is slavery.

I have no idea why we in the west consider that normal and look the other way... What am I saying, I know, oil & VC money...

Some of them also bring their Filipino, India, Nepali, or African slave maids in Europe and everybody looks the other way, they have too much money to be criticized...

They are so brazen about slavery they routinely sell their slaves on Instagram or Facebook ads, with copies such as "doesn't need much food","will sleep on the floor", "will work 20 hours a day"...

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-50228549

> "African worker, clean and smiley," said one listing. Another: "Nepalese who dares to ask for a day off."

> When speaking to the sellers, the undercover team frequently heard racist language. "Indians are the dirtiest," said one, describing a woman being advertised.

They are dehumanized at first place, but the level of racism in these places, on top of all that is shocking...

throw_m239339··on AI content is everywhere on social media, especially LinkedIn
Social Media, Especially Reddit, is getting worse by the minute, vibe coding spam, AI bots filling subs with AI garbage links & comments, mods calling it quit because of the amount of junk they have to deal with it. IT IS EVERYWHERE... AI music on Spotify, AI pull requests on github, AI videos on youtube,... it's gonna kill the internet...
throw_m239339··on Europe's new climate in seven charts
> Europe and the world in general obviously. 1000 people doed in France due to the heat wave.

Way more died during the heat wave in France in 2003. What did France do? Nothing substantial, because nobody is willing to bear the cost of substantial policies to fight climate change.

throw_m239339··on Europe's new climate in seven charts
> Why is it that aggressive climate action is not taken still?

We can't even have global peace around the world, some people are still starving daily despite the fact that there is plenty of food to feed everybody on the planet, and slavery is still a thing, who's going to do what climate action exactly?

throw_m239339··on Gemini Code Assist will be shut down on July 17
Most of these free AI coding tool/agents won't exist anymore by 2028. This LLM thing is so expensive to run, it's understandable that these corporations are moving to the monetization phase.

What solopreneurs also need to worry about is that the cost for these tools is likely to increase... exponentially, because even paid, the plans are still heavily subsidized... when the profit seeking phase kicks in, some people indeed will be there for a rude awakening...

I personally do not to rely heavily on these tools for my projects, because I know what's going to happen.

throw_m239339··on Tidal AI Policy
That's fair, allow AI slop but tag obvious AI slop as such. Hopefully they add an option to hide detected AI slop, something I wish Youtube had for instance.
throw_m239339··on My Students Can't Read
It's not so much that they can't read, it's just that they have a short attention spam, which is an even bigger issue. And yes, I blame Tiktok and co. Your students couldn't sit through Ben-Hur.
