throw93··on If India's Ruling Party IT Head report a post, Meta will take it down
Not really surprised by this. In 2020 Facebook India's then Policy Head Aanki Das told employees that "punishing violations by politicians from Mr Modi's [Prime Minister Narendra Modi] party would damage the company's business prospects in the country". throw93··on VideoLAN threatens to sue India gov’t as ISPs keep blocking VLC website
As of today, it is still blocked.
throw93··on India forced Twitter to put agent on payroll, whistleblower says
I think this is related to IT rules India enforced in 2021. More context here. https://techcrunch.com/2021/08/10/twitter-now-in-compliance-...

Indian govt was not happy with the criticism it received on twitter about it's handling of COVID and even forced twitter to delete some tweets. Even tweets asking for help during oxygen crisis were deleted. Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-56883483

WhatsApp of all companies put up quite a fight against Indian Govt demand to monitor the messages, although I'm not sure what became of it. Source 1: https://www.forbes.com/sites/aayushipratap/2021/06/15/whatsa... Source 2: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/25/technology/whatsapp-india....

throw93··on Google cancelled a talk on caste bias
If X has been marginalizing Y throughout history and you belong to X class then its possible that you might be uncomfortable to hear the history and find it anti-X. But that doesn’t invalidate the struggle of Y right?
throw93··on Google cancelled a talk on caste bias
>> There is no caste discrimination. PERIOD. I have witnessed up close.

How can you be so certain, especially when you’re mentioning “Dalits” as 3rd person? “Trust me” is not a source.

>> For several generations Dalits enjoy a superior position

Literally not true. https://m.timesofindia.com/india/presence-of-scs-sts-in-govt...

throw93··on Google cancelled a talk on caste bias
Source please. What exactly did you search for? I did not find any controversy when I googled her name.
throw93··on Google cancelled a talk on caste bias
How is this political? This is standard DEI stuff.
throw93··on Google cancelled a talk on caste bias
>> discredit the speaker because they know there is truth to the arguments.

Source please.

>> the problem may be among single digit or double digit individuals at best.

Why do you think it's in single or double digit "at best"? This is a huge problem in India and moving to US doesn't make a racist person inclusive automatically.

throw93··on Facebook deletes page of protesting Indian farmers
Context: Tens of thousands of Indian farmers are protesting at the outskirts of the Delhi for 3rd week now. They’ve set up social media presence to fight misinformation spread in mainstream news channels. Their Facebook page was deleted the same day it was created. The same Facebook India allowed really toxic pages spreading hate to continue for months until WSJ wrote about it. https://www.wsj.com/articles/facebook-hate-speech-india-poli...
throw93··on A spellchecker used to be a major feat of software engineering (2008)
I was recently tasked with finding alternative to our age old spellchecker. Main criteria was it should be a separate api in cloud(we are not completely in cloud yet). Also I couldn’t use any commercial cloud spell checkers because of data privacy and security. After putting up a demo with an open source spellchecker we ultimately decided to abandon the effort. We found out that most of our competitors were recommending their users to use browser provided spellchecker like the one provided by chrome. We followed the same suite because we felt that being a relatively small development team our time was best spent writing business logic than to to create and maintain a spellcheck service.
throw93··on Yahoo disables auto email forward feature for free accounts
Some interesting stats, https://blog.shuttlecloud.com/the-most-popular-email-provide...

I didn’t know AOL email was still a thing.

throw93··on S3 Strong Consistency
>> Let's say that their consistency model is achieved via quorum, that is writes write to a quorum of nodes while reads read from a quorum of nodes (of their metadata database) then this guarantees read after write consistency.

If reads are reading only from a quorum of nodes how do you guarantee they have latest data? In theory, while a node is servicing a read request wouldn’t you need to query “all” other nodes to verify that the data in current node is latest? What if the quorum of nodes don’t have the latest data yet?

throw93··on S3 Strong Consistency
>> Amazon S3 delivers strong read-after-write consistency automatically for all applications, without changes to performance or availability, without sacrificing regional isolation for applications, and at no additional cost.

So they claim performance and availability will remain same while claiming strong consistency. I was confused at first but then “same” availability isn’t 100% availability. So it indeed CP.

throw93··on Babelfish: SQL Server-to-Postgres Translation Layer
>> '' is null

This was a major pain for us especially in our java data-access layer.

throw93··on Babelfish: SQL Server-to-Postgres Translation Layer
About 10 years back my company hired consultants, spent close to 6 months translating SQL queries/stored procs to be Oracle. The goal was to support both MSSQL Server & Oracle for the on-premise product. It was quite costly undertaking. Then few years later they just abandoned Oracle because of maintenance costs.

I wonder if anyone starting out today chooses Oracle as their relational database.

This was interesting because Hikaru and Magnus were favorites to win the tournament.

throw93··on Show HN: I Rebuilt MySpace from 2007
Blinking text is spot on! It’s a symbol of 90s 2000s websites.
throw93··on Compound found in the hallucinogenic tea ayahuasca can grow new brain cells
>> Then behavioral analysis was performed as previously described during 10 days, and finally, animals were “sacrificed” on day 31.

Is “sacrificing” a common practice after test is finished? I’m probably not supposed to be bothered by this, but still kinda feels sad. On the other hand the discovery is fascinating. I guess it’s all part of the deal.

throw93··on Tips for Founders Doing Sales (From a Founder)
This is indeed a hard lesson to learn. For me I used to charge less out of insecurity that I will lose the customer. But later on I grew some backbone to ask more. It depends on customers as well. Now I simply steer clear of prospects too driven by price rather than value.
throw93··on Tips for Founders Doing Sales (From a Founder)
> 15 employees today, had 0 when I started doing sales

That is impressive, especially sales and marketing. How did you handle marketing when starting out alone? Was it mostly online or you visited local customers? I find getting foot in the door most difficult thing to do.

throw93··on Salesforce is in talks to buy Slack
Can you use JIRA APIs through Postman instead of UI in your case? It won't be super convenient but at least it would be faster I suppose.
throw93··on Salesforce is in talks to buy Slack
Can't help but think of Dieter Rams design principles. Do those principles apply for websites? I mean they are products in a way.

For this particular website I think the design is obstructing the functionality. "Good design is unobtrusive - Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression."

throw93··on HuffPost India is history, thanks to new FDI norms
Props to newslaundry.com for posting this story. They show nuances that aren't covered by popular news channels in India. e.g. they explained Krishi(farmer) Bill, Citizenship Amendment Bill in a fun and logical way.

Meanwhile many popular TV news channels in India are busy shouting from top of their lungs to seek attention. It's hard not to damage your ears and logical thinking when listening to some Indian news channels. throw93··on Twitter is warning users when they attempt to 'like' misinformation
I wish it were more active in India. Not that I trust them to judge right from wrong but at least I think they have recently been doing better job than fb in flagging flagrant violations.
throw93··on Apple Silicon M1: Black Magic Fuckery
Very excited about the performance of new chip. Although I would wait another year till popular apps start working reliably.
throw93··on Left for dead, twice, RadioShack gets another shot online
To be clear the comeback would be online. It’s also interesting that they plan to sell through Amazon as well.

Although I liked visiting humongous Fry’s stores more, for me the appeal for these stores was to see cool stuff in person and try it out.
