throw8932894··on Employees given three months to return to Facebook office
Good! Usual digital nomad spots are getting too crowded. I welcomed covid initially, it normalised remote work. But it drives cost of nice places too high.
throw8932894··on Attempts to scientifically “rationalize” policy may be damaging democracy
"I love science" is just empty logo. Ask what papers they read/wrote recently, and it falls apart.
throw8932894··on Next time you share a spomenik photo, think about what it means (2016)
Yes, it is brutal, photo was arranged to be brutal. His father and people smugglers should be in jail.

Turkey is a safe country, and Greece has embassies there. There was no need for this boy to die.

throw8932894··on Next time you share a spomenik photo, think about what it means (2016)
What walls, what "forceful and brutal isolation"?

Traffic between EU and other countries (Turkey) works normally except COVID restrictions. People can buy tickets, there is no need to climb walls or swim. We have embassies all around the world, it is easy to ask for asylum.

If you are comparing current situation to fascism and Berlin Wall, you are out of your mind.

throw8932894··on India to propose cryptocurrency ban, penalising miners and traders
Why not both?

Party officials can be very nationalistis, communism forever, death to Taiwan. But their family is in western country and 60% of their assets are out of communist shithole their call home.

throw8932894··on Can a Vegan Diet Be Healthy? A Literature Review
Fasting (AKA not eating anything for 40 days) can be healthy. The real question is: Is it sustainable, even in edge cases like childhood or pregnancy?

Even rural chinese sustained on rice and salt, need a chicken once a week.

throw8932894··on Female Founder Secrets: Fertility
Author waited and also regrets. My point is that having kids early is much easier and cheaper, because it is at peak physical health.

Baby requires too much attention and prevents work in normal 9-5 job with fixed schedule and meetings. But it leaves enough "holes" in time table to work on something.

throw8932894··on Female Founder Secrets: Fertility
> When I mention it to someone that I want to take time off for a couple years

> actual equality where we acknowledge that women have different needs and desires

I find your view sexist and disturbing. 99% men would love to take couple of years off with kids as well. But face even more obstacles!

throw8932894··on Female Founder Secrets: Fertility
> Startups take much longer than you’d think before they become successful.

90% of startups fail, they NEVER become successful. Gambling on some theoretical future success is just bad advice.

Also egg freezing and late age pregnancy is VERY expensive and complicated. Author herself had three miscarriages.

I would suggest something else: have children between 18-25, and start self funded company while working at home. By early 30ies, kids will be at school and company should generate some income.

throw8932894··on Microsoft evading VAT tax with GitHub sponsors
Rafael is in Norway, he has good reason to be paranoid. Their tax office is a bit greedy and strange when it comes to taxes. For example even after leaving Norway, person is still tax resident of Norway for three years.

In normal EU country this would be a donation. There is no contract signed, no work relation, no goods to deliver.

throw8932894··on Ethereum Isn't Fun Anymore
> I need a hero, and by that, I mean that I need a usable methodology for building scaleable decentralized apps. Yes, you've heard that right. We don't need more "Ethereum killers" that can do 10x more tx/s than Ethereum. Those are useless.

> Instead, we need an approach for the average Joe developer to create their idea within the Ethereum ecosystem without the need for hardcore unproven technologies.

So instead of fixing the actual problem, Ethereum scalability, we will do what? This technology was developed by a few guys, most of them already left. It was meant to fix Bitcoin "smart contracts" (there is a such thing).

Tech behind Ethereum is outdated. Even newer versions rehash the same broken idea with sharding. We got 10 years and billions poured into consensus research. There are actual papers and universities doing this stuff. There are github projects that do stuff like decentralized auctions, mixers...

throw8932894··on 3 years ago, remote top paying gigs were hard to find. Today they are the norm
Do you really think that employer can ensure employee safety in typical open plane office?
throw8932894··on “Location-Based Pay” – Who are we to complain?
You need to demonstrate that you understand and can modify code in real project. Many programmers are code illiterates, job interview is all about filtering them out.

Small trivial projects on github profile do not count for much. Contributions to some established OS project are great.

throw8932894··on “Location-Based Pay” – Who are we to complain?
Foreigners can not buy or own properties in Thailand. Often this scenario enriches some local after divorce.

throw8932894··on Ask HN: How can I become the best software developer I can be?
Take an opensource project you like and follow its development.

Each bug has description and commit that fixes it. If you can reason how bug was fixed, you will be good.

Also some projects have very good documentation. Read it from start to finish.

Do not drink coffe, sleep well, avoid stress.. anything that reduces your cognitive abilities...

throw8932894··on When did “disturb” became the default mode?
You are overthinking it. If you want good sleep, take tech out of your bedroom.
throw8932894··on A recent poll of employees who are working remotely
I think we are way past rationality. I do not see how we can go back to normal.

Hygiene rules will change, and companies have to adapt.

throw8932894··on A recent poll of employees who are working remotely
My country has new rule about minimal square space per employee. Capacity of our office is now reduced to 20%. 80% employees have to work from home, they do not fit into our office.

If this rule is permanent, companies may not be able to afford office space. WFH may become "new normal" bcos it is only thing company can afford.

In old days, flu spread in office like wild fire. Companies outsourced negative externalities (sick leave and sick holidays) to their employees. Now we have way more transmissible viruses and probably new regulations.

throw8932894··on A Peek into the Future of Distros
Are we going to talk about SUDO security and its implications?

For me future is less, but more controllable features. Things like dbus based security, snap or "universe" repo on Ubuntu are absolutely out of questions.

I really like OpenSuse and its direction. Conservative, yet fresh packages. Automated testing. Curated yet substantial package base. Package manager integrated with BTRFS snapshots...

throw8932894··on IKEA buys 11,000 acres of U.S. forest to keep it from being developed
If you avoid paying taxes, it is easy to be charitable.

Wikipedia: > The IKEA group has a complex corporate structure, which members of the European Parliament have alleged was designed to avoid over €1 billion in tax payments over the 2009–2014 period.[14][15] It is controlled by several foundations based in the Netherlands and Liechtenstein.[16][17]

throw8932894··on Management by metrics leads us astray
Ok, you seem to have better numbers, I was just pulling numbers from top of my head.

My point is that search is not priority for google anymore. 15 years ago it won because it had clean simple UI. Now its bog down with ads. Duck and others offer much better experience.
