throw8932894··on Construction of radio equipment in a Japanese PoW camp
Sort of reminds me how we constructed ham radio during socialism in 1980ties. Access to integrated circuits was restricted, we had to solder thousands of discrete parts, salvaged from old TVs and radios.
throw8932894··on Analog computers were the most powerful computers for thousands of years [video]
"Most powerful" is quite a stretch. Human computers were far better and more universal.
throw8932894··on Faking a Positive Covid Test
In a few weeks it will be everywhere. It has crazy infection rate, look at super spreader event in Norway. I would just recommend to do periodic self tests not to "miss it". Reinfection may be hard.
throw8932894··on Faking a Positive Covid Test
Some people even want to CATCH covid to get recovery cert. For many people covid infection is quite mild with no symptoms.
throw8932894··on Faking a Positive Covid Test
You can do rapid test remotely, by doing self test via skype with doctor. It gives you EU valid cert, all legal.
throw8932894··on Overemployed – Work Two Remote Jobs
> Be free from office politics

Cheating like this defeats the purpose. Go self employed and charge by task not by time.

throw8932894··on Omicron variant was 73% of U.S. covid cases last week
CDC should remove note about Newcast from website. It gives wrong impression and may confuse people.
throw8932894··on My parents collect cans for a living
OP argued that US is so great, since it allows immigrants to "make it" by collecting trash. It is exactly this type of smugness, false positivism and immigrant exploitation I hate.

People should not be ashamed for not owning a house. But they should also know that chance to buy a house for unqualified worker in NY is 0.001%. If there is a realistic view of situation in US, they may stay at their home country.

throw8932894··on Tesla remotely unlocks Model 3 car, uses smart summon to help repo agent
What is legality of making alternative firmware for Tesla? I guess they could argue with safety. Does the car loose road worthy certification, if its software is altered?
throw8932894··on Russian court accidentally confirmed Russian military presence in Ukraine
Perhaps you should read a bit more Russian sources. There is a Minsk peace agreement, Ukraine was supposed to stop fighting, organise elections, get new government and recognise autonomous regions. Instead it continued fighting. Russia has obligation to those two autonomous regions.
throw8932894··on 3 lines of code shouldn't take all day
In my experience developers develop their own "unique style" to deal with with this problem. Most often it is horrible pile of mess. Often without unit tests since they do not give much feedback. And acceptance criteria is simple "it compiles and prints ok".

With short iterative changes I have unit tests and fine grained git history, to untangle it.

throw8932894··on How I spend less time on YouTube
On Android there is Kiwi browser with desktop uBlock extension can do this blocking.
throw8932894··on WhatsApp Launches Instant Cryptocurrency Payments in the US
Paypal charges 3% and randomly bans accounts.
throw8932894··on Boox Mira Pro – 25.3" E Ink Monitor
I work on a beach a lot. Laser printer costs $100 and paper is like 0.01 cents. Probably better usability.

This thing is not hardened for outdoor use. I dont think it would work in cafe. If it drops on floor, liquids, sand, salty water....

throw8932894··on Update on Omicron
Or maybe SARS‑CoV‑2 just become common flu. There will be herd immunity and risk will become low.
throw8932894··on Dam the Bering Strait, use nuclear-powered propellers to melt poles (2020)
We need something like this to stop global warming!
throw8932894··on Firefox is the alternative to a Chrome hegemony
> Really what Mozilla need to do is build a “new browser” called something different and put their weight behind that

Mozilla brand has value in privacy, not browsers. It could start VPN, cloud services, remote backups, smart home, security cameras... Even Android phones with stamp from Mozilla would be great.

There are no money in browsers, it is basically a feed tube from big corporation to its drones. Mozilla should not sponsor large corporations.

throw8932894··on Ask HN: Where are all the software-contracting agents?
I get 1 goof offers out of 50 weekly. Secretary filters that, makes first contact, arranges details.... Money well spend.
throw8932894··on Ask HN: I purchased a domain and now the registry wants to take it back
Do not register domains on some banana islands (IO is for Indian Ocean). With ".com" or national domain you would have a chance at court.
throw8932894··on China's Foreign Ministry 'not aware' of situation of tennis player Peng Shuai
You really have no idea about chinese real politik. CCP is just group of competing gangs. "Disappeared" in western sense does not make a sense, there is no central authority, just some mobster who ordered it.

Politician who caused this mess is done, he may disappear latter when things are quiet.

throw8932894··on Ask HN: Best cars without too much digitalization?
Lada Niva 4x4. Old school soviet, but modernized car. With airconditioning and some modern gimmicks. Very easy to fix and maintain. Good fuel economy, some versions even pass Euro 5 emission limits.

I liked WW2 jeeps and their simplicity, this seems like modern equivalent.

throw8932894··on China's Foreign Ministry 'not aware' of situation of tennis player Peng Shuai
Why should government even comment on this? Accusations on social media are private matter, this crime was not even reported to police.
throw8932894··on Ask HN: Where are all the software-contracting agents?
I have opposite problem. Too many unrelated job offers with low salary, irrelevant tech stack or high tech debt. I hired secretary to do initial filtering. Final negotiation is always on you.
throw8932894··on Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac to Back Home Loans of Nearly $1M as Prices Soar
You assume low interest rate has no negative effect in long run. In 30 years the house may be worth $100M on paper, but is unsalable and in neighbourhood that look like Detroit .
throw8932894··on Briar 1.4 – Offline sharing, message transfer via SD cards and USB sticks
With termux it is pretty simple to run sshd and rsync on android phone.
throw8932894··on Arthritis drug that cost $198 in 2008 is now more than $10k
You are out of reality.

My country has public health insurance, but gov also works hard to keep costs down. If we paid for drugs like this, the public system would bankrupt.

throw8932894··on Arthritis drug that cost $198 in 2008 is now more than $10k
Who do you think pays that inflated price? Medicare and government. It is the same as gov backed student loans. It inflates price to sky high prices.

Activists never demand cheaper (or more transparent) health care. They demand state to pay for it!

throw8932894··on Automatic CPU speed and power optimizer for Linux
Disable hyperthreading, it saves about 10% energy
throw8932894··on Child suicides in Japan hit record high
Helped? If you isolate kid from its friends for 18 months and imprison it in small room, it will become suicidal. There is no need for abusive parents. Lockdowns themselfs are evil!
throw8932894··on ‘When We Cease to Understand the World’
Not sure Chinese would agree with you. China declined a lot in past decade. More restrictions, everything is more expensive, harder to get job, MUCH harder to travel outside country... It was way more cheerful place decade ago.
