throw8932894··on India's richest man pouring $80B into green energy, including new ventures
Yes, canals. Not every country has infinitive supply of land. It is very difficult to find free land in India.
throw8932894··on India's richest man pouring $80B into green energy, including new ventures
Solar actually makes sense in India, it does not snow there :)

I seen documentary where they covered river with solar panels. It reduced evaporation of water by significant amount. And it did not occupy any arable land.

And big parts of India have underdeveloped electricity grid. Solar is easiest way to bring electric infrastructure there.

throw8932894··on Cost of Attrition
More accessible option is to pay former developers for consulting.
throw8932894··on Ask HN: Is Bay Area in a tipping point for tech talent?
My estimate is about 50% on 300k/year, just taxes no living expenses. But main reason is tax unpredictability. I would have to pay small fortune on accountants and it still does not guarantee, there wont be fines latter. If you are partially self employed, and receive part of salary in crypto.. Things get complicated very quickly.

I am not worried about healthcare. It is just ultra expensive if you want good quality.

throw8932894··on Ask HN: Is Bay Area in a tipping point for tech talent?
How about taxes? In my East-European country I am paying about 10% net on taxes (including social and health, including expenses, excluding VAT). Nothing illegal or offshore, just normal accounting from local semi retired lady.

In Cali I would have to juggle with deferred stocks, exit taxes, local taxes, federal taxes etc.. And net salary would be about same.

throw8932894··on The impact of sexual abuse on female development: a longitudinal study
I seen study[1] that claimed similar results (early puberty, depression...) but from lack of male figures in childhood. Another study showed similar results in macaque monkeys. Evolutionary explanation was that group needs to be repopulated faster.

throw8932894··on Toxic culture is driving the great resignation
Top performers are like 5% of staff? They may have high attrition, but company wide it may be very low.

And there is salary limit you may get as an employee. Most top performers will start they own business, and do the same job as independent consultants.

throw8932894··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
It is pretty common in regular workshops. Compressed air powers drills, riveting machines, sprays guns, jack hammers... Tools powered by compressed air are simpler (no electronics), more durable and cheaper.
throw8932894··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab, but feared debate could hurt
It is really hard to tell if you are trolling. Anyway, it is all flat earth nut whack conspiracy, have a good day.
throw8932894··on Germany doesn't rule out closing Telegram – interior minister
Where is antifa when you need them :)
throw8932894··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab, but feared debate could hurt
> Let's skip omicron for now.

Are you talking about omicron now or original Wuhan virus?

Omicron stays mainly in upper respiratory parts. It does not go deep into lungs and body as other variants. That makes it less lethal, not because it is somehow milder. Normal cold is also quite lethal, once it spreads through body, but it never gets a chance.

I am happy to accept theory it stayed in single host for several months, and gained a few mutations. But that does not explain its DNA code. You do not get this type of mutations without spread in massive population. And there are no random bit flips, that should accumulate over several months.

> But that will prove exactly nothing to anybody who believes in lab leak origin.

This is not a religion, there is no "believe". Lab leak (or artificial synthesis) is just a theory that explains origin of virus very well. Dismissing it without investigation would be unscientific.

throw8932894··on Ask HN: Why do new browsers use Chromium instead of Firefox as their base?
Recently Mozilla decided it does not want donations :)

Great for woke bs, not so great for actually funding and developing browser.

throw8932894··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab, but feared debate could hurt
It stayed in single person for months, and somehow it got more infectious in this person, without infecting anyone. It is perfectly adapted to stain airborne and pass lungs, but it gained that inside person! And it only gained mutations related to higher infection rate and severity, nothing else, no other random changes.

Omicron DNA was "forked" in July 2020. It was not detected until now, when it spread like wild fire. Unless we find missing links in nature, I find natural origin very unlikely.

throw8932894··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab, but feared debate could hurt
This "natural" origin theories kind of sound like conspiracy. Bats, mice, lemurs.. Somehow wildly different DNA parts combine, and virus perfectly adapted for human population emerges from cave with zero prior human contact...

If Omicron evolved in mice, we should be able to find it in wild mice population. Or maybe partially replicate its evolution in lab on mice population.

We know virus synthesis is possible, it is accessible even to small national governments, universities and research centers. But mainstream agrees there is ZERO chance of that happening. Nobody would invest couple of million dollars, to end pandemic once for all.

throw8932894··on Asian Boss planted deep blue YouTuber and pretended he was a 'man on the street'
Big part of Africa speaks French. Language is not related to culture.

Look what CCP did to languages (other than Mandarin), ethnic identity (other than Han) and writing systems.

throw8932894··on Asian Boss planted deep blue YouTuber and pretended he was a 'man on the street'
...and also Chinese Wall and Kung-fu...

CCP did everything it could to wipe out old traditions, and replace them with communism and cult of leaders. Latter they realized it is not enough to keep coherent national identity, and started promoting a few symbols they liked from past. The "big red door decorations" is not Chinese culture, it is a small fragment of it.

> It is simply absurd to claim Chinese culture only survived in "a few small places" in the mainland.

I do not claim that. It did not survived at all on mainland. "A few small places" are outside of mainland: Taiwan, Honk Kong, Macau and perhaps Singapore.

throw8932894··on More Americans are saying they’re ‘vaxxed and done’
I am vaxxed and done. I was told by doctors and by government officials, that vaccine will make me immune to virus indefinitely, and I do believe that. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar and antivaxxer for me.
throw8932894··on New‐onset autoimmune phenomena post‐Covid‐19 vaccination
It was probably assembled by professional editor. It is great job for digital nomads, and many bright people in line for this type of work. And paper has a good budget, there is an ad on first page :)
throw8932894··on I went back to using a ThinkPad from 2012
10 years used laptops are wonky. Maybe nice DIY project but definitely not as main workstation for travels. And if you want multiple 4k screens or newer peripherals...

My current setup is Dell XPS 13 from 2015 and portable Deskmini PC with Ryzen 7 5700g. This laptop is pretty hackeable ultrabook, over years I replaced chassis, keyboard and some ports. But it has only 16GB RAM and supports only 1x4k@30Hz, so it will be soon replaced by Framework laptop (64GB RAM, 4x4k screens).

And Deskmini is tiny 2kg PC with great desktop CPU. I found all high end laptops to be rather expensive and with insufficient cooling for constant load. With this I can have proper desktop performance in laptop sized package.

So my final setup will be two computers, with 12 cores and 128GB RAM and weight of only 5KG. I can use 7x4K screens and have total 20 TB of integrated storage. All cheap hardware with no crazy hacks.

throw8932894··on Upwork asking me for a $12.5k refund as the client was using someone else’s card
This! Middle man just adds risks and fees! Keep working 2 years for the same client via Upwork is not very smart.
throw8932894··on Ask HN: Are We in a Bubble?
Not in bubble, but in saturation. So much money and not enough opportunities to invest. It is not going to "pop" bcos there are no other places where to store money.
throw8932894··on New York City will make it mandatory for companies to post salaries on job ads
So most jobs will now be listed with salary range 10k to 999k/year, depending on performance. Great work!
throw8932894··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
I read article from Israel. It wrote: "severe covid cases are low, but flu season just started". Pandemic will finish at spring, and hopefully will not start next winter.
throw8932894··on Should you contribute open data to OpenStreetMap?
Privacy ship has sailed long time ago. Try to remove license plates from your car. Or refuse to share information about your health!

Now it is about gate keeping. Young people and startups, need the same ability as govs and established players. Until recently you could not even embed maps on your website (too expensive). Free data are levelling the playing field.

And if anything OpenStreetMap helps me not to share my location. I can store map of entire continent offline on my phone, and do not have to ask remote servers for navigation!

throw8932894··on Apple to Apple Comparison: M1 Max vs. Intel
On some intel CPUs charger included with Macbook does not not satisfy CPUs power consumption. So if you ran CPU on 100%, it will use battery to get extra power, and macbook will eventually die, after battery reaches 0%.

This is not how you design "workstation". Macbooks are just toys.

throw8932894··on Is It Even Worth Working on FOSS Anymore?
Of course it is worth it. You can make very good living as remote-guru-consultant with total freedom. All while making similar money to FANG employees (counting stocks, high cost of living and taxes).

OSS developers do not have to be unpaid doormats. If I would be log4j dev, I would probably just wipe out all JNDI related functionality from project. Companies who need JNDI for backward comparability, would have to pay for support.

throw8932894··on The Exclusive License to Make Money from the Community Contributions
Most crypto companies are OSS first.
throw8932894··on Democratic Domestic Product
I do not understand why persons worth is measured in personal income, without including expenses, child support, taxes and negative externalises such as damaged health. Company can include all sort of expenses and pay zero taxes, lowly employee can not even put gas into expenses.

It leads to absurd situations, where person has actual negative income (has to borrow money to get by), but on paper is "very rich". But millionaire with couple of properties can claim hardship and ask for social welfare.

throw8932894··on Best practices can slow your application down
Back in 2005 Ebay was served using single executable binary that had around 100MB. At some point they hit maximal number of functions allowed by compiler. Back than the best "practice" for large scale services was enterprise Java on VERY expensive Sun server.
throw8932894··on DNA seen through the eyes of a coder
> DNA is not like C source but more like byte-compiled code for a virtual machine called ‘the nucleus’.

This "virtual machine" gives feedback in 40 years, perhaps 1000 years. I am all in for fast innovation. But we should not give a pass to jocks who just want to spread their seed around!
