throw7··on How many video games include a marriage proposal? At least one
Does Bill Gates count?
throw7··on Lawmakers want to ban VPNs
Wisconsin "porn" websites will just move out of Wisconsin.

The bill reads like you would think from someone who's been talking with the ceo of an age verification company. The bill gives the website two options: use a _commercial_ age verification product tied to gov't id checking, or "digitize" the web user's gov't id.

throw7··on Microsoft confirms Windows 11 is about to change
The Return of Clippy.
throw7··on IP blocking the UK is not enough to comply with the Online Safety Act
First they came for the suicide forums...
throw7··on Meta projected 10% of 2024 revenue came from scams
"...scammers obtain sexual images of a user, often a teenager, under false pretenses and then blackmail them – ... was becoming commonplace on Meta’s platforms"

There you go U.K. OFCOM. Here's child endangerment propagated knowingly by Facebook. Don't worry, I know you won't do anything to Facebook because you "protecting" kids is pretext.

throw7··on End of Japanese community
Saying "I'm sorry for how you feel..." is the most condescending way to begin. Then a "let's jump on a con call"... oh... why would I do that when I just told you? smh.
throw7··on Why aren't smart people happier?
Happiness is relational. The meta-study (i only read the small abstract) concludes that being around happy people correlates to your happiness. Anecdotally, really "smart" people can be about the least fun people to be around.
throw7··on Wikipedia row erupts as Jimmy Wales intervenes on 'Gaza genocide' page
Sounds like Wikipedia is turning into reddit.
throw7··on Understanding the Worst .NET Vulnerability
Many moons ago, we used to run a full application level http proxy firewall. It didn't last the year. False positives were a headache and sites would just send shit down the pipe and browsers would happily power through.

I don't hate postel's law, but I admit I try not to think about it lest I get triggered by a phone call that such and such site doesn't work.

throw7··on 10M people watched a YouTuber shim a lock; the lock company sued him – bad idea
Who knew shaking a juice box could be so intimidating!
throw7··on What happened to running what you wanted on your own machine?
People are perfectly happy with a walled garden. The question one should always be asking is what is the difference between that and a panopticon? What happens to me if I start seeing faded flowers and no-entry signs? Can I escape? With my stuff or friends or family?
throw7··on Armed police swarm student after AI mistakes bag of Doritos for a weapon
If false positives are known to happen, then you design a system where the image is vetted before telling the cops the perpetrator is armed. The company is basically swatting, but I'm sure they'll never be held liable.
throw7··on Rivian's TM-B electric bike
"Drive by Wire"? This is not even anywhere near a "bike". At least you could argue "e-bikes" could still be pedaled without the battery. It's not that anybody would want to or even could, but an argument could be made.
throw7··on 4Chan Lawyer publishes Ofcom correspondence
If the UK is serious, they could ban entry to the 4chan owner(s) or even arrest them upon entry, so it's not something to just ignore or laugh off.
throw7··on You are the scariest monster in the woods
The steelman would be that knowledge is possible outside the domain of Science. So the opposing argument to evolution as the mechanism for us (the "general intelligence" of AGI) would be that the pathway from conception to you is not strictly material/natural.

Of course, that's not going to be accepted as "Science", but I hope you can at least see that point of view.

throw7··on Social anxiety isn't about being liked
True. Back in the day, the mates and I would greet each other by saying, "Hey, fuck you." Then, "No, fuck you.". You can kinda guess it eventually ping pongs louder and funnier. We kind of had to stop when other innocent people would pop in and ask if everything is "ok".
throw7··on Greg Kroah-Hartman explains the Cyber Resilience Act for open source developers
Even the requirement of a security email contact in a readme is a liability put on the hobbyist. It's antithetical to making code available "as is".

Greg KH says it's going to be great... let me ask, can I /dev/null the email Greg?

throw7··on Boeing has started working on a 737 MAX replacement
Well, if I was CEO of Boeing, first day I'd basically be Microsoft and move heaven and earth getting the Dave Cutler of aviation (I have no idea who that is). He's in charge and if you don't like it you come to me.

Second problem are the MBA's. I don't have a solution for that, other than keep them far away from Cutler's division.

Honestly, the technical part is "easy"; it's the day to day politics that gets in the way when what is needed is longterm thinking. Take for example when NYC hired Andy Byford and Cuomo The Child couldn't stand not being in the spotlight. Shame.

throw7··on Why use mailing lists?
Yes, I was hoping to check out ladybird browser project, but they use discord.
throw7··on US cities pay too much for buses
So in my area, believe it or not, there is experiments with uber-style point-to-point pickup/dropoff and electric car short term "rentals".

https://www.cdta.org/flex https://drivecdta.org/

The few flex areas are small and I've never tried the electric rentals.

Every once in awhile I do use the bus system to check out how things are going and I get how depressive an empty bus is... I was just on an empty bus to the airport (which I have to take two routes to get there, another tough negative to solve).

throw7··on Just let me select text
It's not only text. Images and videos are obfuscated to make copy/downloading harder.
throw7··on EU age verification app not planning desktop support
Looks like the 'number of the beast' isn't a number; It's a smartphone from Google or Apple. Who knew?
throw7··on Leatherman (vagabond)
Not all who wander are lost. They may be just walking in circles.
throw7··on Firefox 143 for Android to introduce DoH
Does anyone know how to force disable DoH on a network?

In https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/canary-domain-use-appli... it says that the canary domain does not apply for users who have made the choice to turn on DoH by themselves.

I want to avoid running an sslproxy, and it seems an application level proxy on the firewalls is necessary.

throw7··on Tesla Faces US Auto Safety Investigation over Door Handles

throw7··on Tesla said it didn't have key data in a fatal crash, then a hacker found it
I wasn't opposed to buying a tesla. In my situation, I don't have the ability to charge ev's conveniently, so I'm not in the market so to speak.

Plus, I'm not interested at this time in the "autopilot" "AI" stuff; I believe drivers should be responsible all the time, until such time that full legal liability is put on the manufacturer.

Don't get me wrong... I would love to call my car to come pick me up at the airport!

throw7··on Tesla said it didn't have key data in a fatal crash, then a hacker found it
After reading the article, I am never buying a Tesla.

Props to greenthehacker. may you sip Starbuck's venti-size hot chocolates for many years to come.

throw7··on I Am An AI Hater
Just now, I just watched a France24 news presenter ask Grok about crime in DC. Shake. My. Head. I kind of feel like we're headed for something... not good.
throw7··on Mapping connections of anti-offshore wind groups and their lawyers
Three wind projects got scrapped in NY and I always wondered if there was some alternate hidden reason. It does seem though that it was just costs and technological shifts that made NY cancel them...

throw7··on A failure of security systems at PayPal is causing concern for German banks
Venmos's security is also A++. I made an account, sent some money, then my account was immediately flagged and closed for fraud. Nice.
