through··on Ask HN: Do you code in a VR headset?
Yes. Within the natural simulation of the world that is the phenomenal field (the aggregate sensory datum) presented to consciousness. Why would you want to work within a simulation within a simulation? This VR is guaranteed for life, and without a subscription model (excluding taxes of course) :p
through··on Ask HN: How to balance intellectual activities and sedentary lifestyle?
Yoga
through··on Can I become associate professor/professor by self-learning?
I share your aspirations, but considering the scholasticism of academic research, you require formal accreditation to proceed with titular decorations. I don’t see why you could not personally research a topic before submitting a dissertation to a university you hopefully have access to. I don’t know any other way to achieve the rank.
through··on When did the OOP principles change?
Perhaps your or another’s understanding changed. Avoid the cargo cult of millennial software design. It’s generally polluted.

It does no harm to reference the GoF that perhaps the same G. Booch is associated with:

Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software

Replace word first thinking with thought first thinking and you’ll be fine.

through··on ECMAScript modules in Node.js: the new plan
I completely agree. As I pointed out below, following the path you suggested, if the filetype has to change to fix the require regression, they could use .es. Would it be surprising to use .es with ECMAScript? No.
through··on ECMAScript modules in Node.js: the new plan
You could support .es file types which would work just as well and is more succinct than .mjs, but AFAIK the group won’t because of “branding” issues. Bull. Use .es. Standard semantics for ECMSScript which is the name of the language, no games or pretence.
through··on ECMAScript modules in Node.js: the new plan
Proposing or fixing a bug in a third party product should not affect a web standard. If you want my personal help to assist the NodeJS fix, yeah, I would be good there, but I can’t fix the toxic bikeshed culture that you obviously enjoy. MJS is NodeJS solution. It is not a web solution.
through··on ECMAScript modules in Node.js: the new plan
The Michael Jackson Script is an absolute joke and had arisen solely from NodeJS attempting to solve its own require legacy. It’s not the business of any other party to do such a ridiculous thing.

.mjs is an aberration, a solution to a poor implementation of one web server, not a solution. NodeJS need to do the hard work of solving their own problem and stop attempting to manufacture “real world solutions” with .mjs.

through··on Ask HN: Google recommended adult diapers - why?
I felt the need to be direct as I survived. I have an inoperable medical condition and for many months suicide was desirable as euthanasia is not available in my country. Like him, I did a lot of research first. Unlike him, I did not make mysterious threats. I got a shrink. When I am at a late age, I may decide it best, perhaps even culture will, but right now, I treasure being alive. I have found a deeper peace with mindfulness and continue to live with the condition. Sometimes you have to face your options and your state of being, and that is often unavailable at those times. So I called out. I hope this person can find compassion and courage that they may not be aware of having. If this is a case of an ego with a personality disorder binging on suffering, I would still say to anyone, find compassion and courage and you will be surprised at what remains even when a way of living is no longer possible. That is all that's in my heart. You are very kind for your offering of openness, but don’t forget to take care of yourself too.
through··on Ask HN: Google recommended adult diapers - why?
Listen. There are more noble ways to achieve euthanasia than posting about Google advertisements and entangling strangers into what is either a personal crisis or a very sick prank. Consider what you have been doing here. You have posted this twice in as many days. Pay attention to your actions.
through··on [dead]
You will harm people that love you if you proceed. They will suffer your pains directly and indirectly. The soul pain of losing you and the soul pain of not being able to save you. There are other ways to end things absolutely without leaving life. Use compassion rather than person feeling if you can.

However, the more important question here is this: diapers? Really??

through··on Irish woman jailed for criminal damage to €1.50 crisps
Every day I save a little more to leave this pathetic shithole of an island. It is an embarrassment that I cannot identify with and that I can no longer endure.
through··on Ask HN: Who do you realize is time to give up in something?
A chance of a lifetime that has not materialized versus a world of uncertainty? Broken hope is a burden to wellbeing. Stay there and risk your mental health (anxiety), or do the latter: stay safe, be wise and leave responsibly.
through··on Ask HN: Motivation for personal projects when burnt out from work?
Yes. Ive found meditation or simple home yoga clears the mind which is of considerable benefit to focus, including noting when it is self defeating to do more work.
through··on Ask HN: Have you written or came across any useful AppleScript on MacOS
Indirectly, yes, though I found myself disliking the AppleScript language, so turned to JXA which provides the same functionality in ECMAScript. I found this repo to be helpful for both languages:

https://github.com/JXA-Cookbook/JXA-Cookbook

I know it’s not quite what you are asking, but I hope it provides some benefit.

through··on Ask HN: What are the biggest causes for procrastination on software development?
It depends on the context. Personally, the trigger points are:

- ever evolving problem domain research manifesting as architectural doubt

- underspecification

- unforeseen integration issues with host API or environment (pattern collision, resource collision)

- F.O.M.O i.e. ego corrupted view of the problem

- cognitive fatigue

I’m sure the list is as endless and diverse as the people who make software...

through··on Ask HN: How to talk to users?
Don't you mean talking to humans that you work with and build solutions for? The term 'user' depersonalises the relationship, and yes, you do need to take care, and so do they, but there are better means. Structure your business relationship and build order first to maintain clarity should the need arise. Bind that agreement on ethics not need. If you do not want a relationship with clients or prospective clients, perhaps use your engineering skills in an existing organisation that shields you from the interaction. Otherwise, honest personal contact is best. Your abilities should be evident in response to need, not assertion of need. Be prepared to skilfully manage emergency situations that are not your own.
through··on Ask HN: Collecting pictures from friends using a selfhosted service?
I have no idea what your platform or experience level is, but if you have macOS, then maybe MAMP is worth a shot. You could set up your own personal Wordpress blog and only expose the upload interface?

https://www.mamp.info/en/

Sorry to be unfamiliar with other platforms in this context.

through··on Ask HN: I set up my own domain for my email and it's all going to SPAM
Good question. I do not know but I would guess that your domain hosting company and the range of IP addresses it uses could be blacklisted, or, the email provider has a well known data signature that vendors associate with spam bots and again, blacklisted. I would be interested to know myself. Best guess; perhaps change email provider or hosting company and see if situation can be replicated. Ensure your email addresses have not been compromised. Good luck.
through··on Google “mandatory” news spam
I concur. Have encountered the same (but with different adverts).

There is no opt out / unsubscribe in the unwanted email.

I still respect some of the potential of Alphabet.

Google. No.

through··on Why has Hacker News become so diluted by None hacker news?
No idea, but for the few interesting topics that arise, I find it good to keep a pulse on the “zeitgeist”. About 30% of the time. Would you consider contributing articles?
through··on Ask HN: Do you see augmented reality products becoming mainstream in the future?
No, not in any meaningful way.
through··on Ask HN: How long have Google / Facebook etc. been trying to kill the web?
The deeper question is where will this go? The web has been capitalized by the ethical breach of abusing the lacking of general technological knowledge by most people and new breed developers aren’t paying attention. I feel your pain but cannot offer a reasonable solution but one may exist with the required ethos. After posting, moments later I saw a post of the following. It holds promise from the inventor of the web:

https://www.inrupt.com/blog/one-small-step-for-the-web

through··on Ask HN: Is it reasonable to assume all skype calls are recorded by Microsoft?
That’s my running assumption and why I don’t use it.
through··on Ask HN: What is causing the recent sudden uproars against Google?
I hope so.
through··on Ask HN: Client wants a bad user interface
Research and cite the negative cognitive effects of bad design in a bona fide psychological context. Care about the person using the application. Quite appropriate in a medical context.
through··on Ask HN: Is Apple ashamed of the iPhone upper notch?
They should be, but apparently they are not.
through··on Should I apply to YC with this idea?
Spread the word. Make it free. Take donations.
through··on Ask HN: What is the typical workflow for a front end designer?
Broad strokes need conversation. Can you be more specific here?
through··on Ask HN: Immigration to ireland
Ireland is on the verge of entering a second recession and their public services are chronically in-navigable. I wouldn’t recommend it.
