threemux··on Greenland is a beautiful nightmare
Oh gimme a break. That's one of the largest benefits to COFA and is heavily used by the Marshallese. Greenland on its own is not a first world country - there simply isn't enough population/work and it's a hard existence as detailed in TFA.

You may not want to come here and that's fine, but it's a huge draw and will continue to be. Administrations are fleeting, but the allure of opportunity remains. You're posting on a forum that is somewhat of a monument to exactly that.

EDIT: some of this made a bit more sense prior to your hasty edit

threemux··on Greenland is a beautiful nightmare
Lol I realize this is tongue in cheek but Denmark has no ability to administer or protect anything that far away. Nor are those places seeking independence.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong and the Danes will successfully integrate a large group of people that don't share their values. They've already done that, right?

threemux··on Greenland is a beautiful nightmare
I think it even makes sense if it were pursued in a different way. Greenland is looking for full independence but can't really hack it financially without aid. I think the COFA (Compact of Free Association) model that we have with Palau and Marshall Islands would work well.

We get expanded military rights and potentially some mineral/drilling rights, while Greenland gets protection, lots of money, access to USPS domestic rates, and probably increased tourism in addition to the independence they desire. Their citizens could also live and work in the US indefinitely.

threemux··on RTO: WTAF
> employees who now have to spend money on [...] childcare

Excuse me, what? Unless he's referring to something like before and after school care for an older child, he's saying people were foregoing daycare for their young children? As a parent of two children younger than kindergarten age, I don't understand how productive remote work was being done without childcare.

threemux··on Rail travel is booming in America
It works on many sites, but the Economist has foiled it as far as I can tell. This one just shows the same snippet you'd get in a regular browser
threemux··on Dotter: Dotfile manager and templater written in Rust
I just use a git repo and GNU Stow similar to the approach in this post (I'm not the author of the post):

https://tamerlan.dev/how-i-manage-my-dotfiles-using-gnu-stow...

Stow is usually trivially installable using the package manager while I'm installing git. Not nearly as full featured as chezmoi but gets the job done for me.

threemux··on Bear is now source-available
I suppose this is the move if you're looking to foreclose all possible competing usages. Kudos for using correct terminology as it is no longer Open Source.

However, I still believe AGPL is a better alternative in most cases and functionally prevents large enterprises from touching your code due to typical internal policies.

threemux··on This is my brain on leeches
Certainly didn't expect to read about leeches today (or Napoleon's piles) but hey that's what's great about HN
threemux··on Do the simplest thing that could possibly work
This is indeed a vexing issue. I feel it often. It's this feeling that leads to resume-driven development which I really work hard to avoid.
threemux··on Building ultra cheap energy storage for solar PV
Will Prowse has been around a while now and this is the first time I'm seeing a critique of his safety habits. Please elaborate as he's widely respected in the solar/storage community.
threemux··on Texas Instruments’ new plants where Apple will make iPhone chips
Shame you've been downvoted. Regarding federal agencies, the Constitution indeed means what it says when it says "The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America." If some agency can wield executive power, it is under the exclusive control of the president. Looking forward to the likely overturning of Humphrey's Executor soon. It's gone in all but name anyway.

Perhaps this will spur some future Congress to take back what they've delegated (like sweeping tariff power)

threemux··on U.S. government takes 10% stake in Intel
The Republican party of 2008 bears little resemblance to the one of 2025, especially on economic issues. Many in the party have changed their views over the last decade+ on industrial policy and the libertarian wing of the party has very little influence now. It's really a striking shift.

What remains of the "old guard" is, in fact, loudly complaining about this move:

threemux··on Walkie-Textie Wireless Communicator
Wow I'm surprised - I based my message of the manual on their site which pretty clearly shows a detachable antenna and says nothing about time limits. I wonder if they received something from the FCC saying they can't market a GMRS radio that isn't type-accepted.
threemux··on Walkie-Textie Wireless Communicator
There is no amount of time that guarantees you won't interfere with another user on a shared channel without time division. Any protocol used has to account for it no matter what.

But discussion of that is irrelevant because the regulation is no more than one every 30 seconds and each one can't be longer than 1 second in duration. This necessarily limits the length of messages you can send or requires more efficient modulation and/or weaker error correction at the tradeoff of worse weak-signal performance.

threemux··on Walkie-Textie Wireless Communicator
While I highly doubt you'd ever get in trouble, data transmissions on GMRS are severely restricted by the FCC. You obviously need the license (though it's just a fee and covers your whole family).

In any case, I'm pretty sure this device is illegal to use for short text messages. It doesn't appear to comply with several of the restrictions on digital emissions in 47 CFR 95.1787(a), namely it appears to have a removable antenna. Removable antennas are fine for regular GMRS use, but not when the device can send digital emissions.

https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-47/part-95/subpart-E#p-95...

Also I'd be shocked if it enforced the time limits for digital transmissions in software. This leads me to believe it's not actually type-certified for use which then calls into question anything else it does. Caveat emptor.

threemux··on Installing a mini-split AC in a Brooklyn apartment
They even have DIY friendly ones now where you don't even need a vacuum pump (not that it's hard but it is one more thing). So easy
threemux··on Open Source Maintenance Fee
Honest question: how would you know if companies stopped using the product as a result of this change? Presumably the only ones you'd hear from are ones that managed to get through the process far enough to complain about procurement (which is definitely another issue, pretty sure GitHub Sponsors doesn't do net 60...)
threemux··on Open Source Maintenance Fee
Hah - Legal at my company wouldn't respond to this by forcing us to pay. They'd take one look at that bizarre EULA and tell us to stop using the product entirely. I suspect this is what will happen in most cases.

Perhaps that's fine in the eyes of the maintainers! But I say this every time someone says they want to restrict commercial use while still being Open Source: just slap AGPL on it. It's radioactive to enterprises; I've never worked anywhere that allowed us to use AGPL code in commercial products. Then, charge for a commercial license.

threemux··on What will become of the CIA?
They don't. This guy is talking out of his ass. They don't have the same funding streams (NSA falls under DoD for example) or missions. Hell, several IC members are military organizations and definitely do not fall under CIA in any way.
threemux··on My Self-Hosting Setup
I'm not using the router, but I do like reading about Stapelberg's quest for ridiculous home Internet speeds! I make do with standard gigabit fiber haha
threemux··on My Self-Hosting Setup
I don't have a very complex setup but I've been super happy with gokrazy for my rpis:

OS upgrades are easy now and it's declarative but I don't have to learn Nix

threemux··on We've got to stop sending files to each other
Dead wrong on Git, not to mention the general, inherent issues with locking your ability to freely share your data behind the monthly plans of cloud vendors. No, local sync isn't a replacement as it's often in a non-free binary format. Cross vendor compatibility issues are waved away as "having to work a little harder". Rarely has a sentence done so much work.

The author attempts to moderate at the end by saying sometimes you need a local copy. However, as this option becomes rarer, so do the tools that support it. Eventually, you won't even get to make that choice.

As for development, "merging" is far more complicated than for text documents and cannot be left to an automated system.

Is sharing files less secure? Surely. Is it worth it? Yes.

threemux··on Colombia seizes first unmanned narco-submarine with Starlink antenna
It's not a submarine and I wish news outlets would stop saying "narco sub". It's a surface vessel designed to have only a very small part above water. Building an actual submarine capable of submerged travel for lengthy periods is quite difficult.
threemux··on Writing Code Was Never the Bottleneck
In a professional setting, I agree 100%, no notes. Where LLMs have helped me the most are actually side projects. There, writing the code is absolutely the bottleneck - I literally can't (or perhaps won't is more truthful) allocate enough time to write code for the little apps I've thought of to solve some small problem.
threemux··on The $25k car is going extinct?
I was always confused why he was popular until someone told me to think of Dave Ramsey like vaping. It's great if you're currently a 2 pack a day cigarette smoker, but bad if you don't currently smoke. That cleared it up for me.

Physician, heal thyself
threemux··on US Supreme Court limits federal judges' power to block Trump orders
Oh I read it, and I disagree with your analysis. Sotomayor makes some decent points in favor of nationwide injunctions when she deigns to engage in legal arguments, but the case against them is very compelling.

The textual case is pretty much completely against them, and if you prefer a consequentialist analysis their drawbacks are well documented across the political spectrum. I will say Barrett's time as a professor can mean her opinions are highly technical in their procedural analysis and she's not as strong of a writer as other members of the court.

This very opinion is also an example of something that Thomas has beat the drum about for some time and it later becomes a majority opinion.

threemux··on US Supreme Court limits federal judges' power to block Trump orders
Yeah you can certainly criticize Thomas's legal theories, but his interpretation is logically consistent and he sticks to it even to the point of frequently solo dissenting.

It's important to read his stuff too because it seems to gain more acceptance as time goes on.

Your points on Sotomayor are well taken, her dissents are often way over the top. However I'm starting to think Justice Jackson is potentially worse when it comes to histrionics

threemux··on US Supreme Court limits federal judges' power to block Trump orders
Justice Jackson's dissent is honestly one of the most embarrassing things I've read from the Court and I've been reading most every opinion for years now. Heavy on the pathos, completely devoid of cogent legal theory. Kinda reminds me of Breyer, who, charitably, had an esoteric style.

Kavanaugh is good to read on any topic - his writing is clear and often easily understandable by the layman. Gorsuch is an excellent writer as well. Those two are imo the best writers currently among the justices.
