thrdbndndn··on Mac mini will be made at a new facility in Houston
Sorry, but this sounds more like a myth, or at least heavily exaggerated. Similar to how Japan often gets romanticized.

Organizing the entire chain geographically at the scale you described (inter-city) doesn't bring huge cost advantages by itself. In China labor has historically been cheap, so the transport cost between regions was never the dominant factor anyway.

Most industrial clusters in China formed organically over time just like the rest of the world. Aside from some exceptions like mining, there isn't some master plan laying out entire cities as linear supply chains to the ocean It's not SimCity.

One thing you're right about is that there is less bureaucratic friction or 'lawyers' in the way when it comes to economic development. For the former, it's because economic growth is THE metric for the government, especially at the local level, so they do whatever it takes to make it happen. For the latter, it's because… well, in China no one sues the government, period. I'm not sure it's a good thing.

Disclaimer: I'm Chinese living in China.

thrdbndndn··on Ladybird adopts Rust, with help from AI
To me, a project's "hype-ness" is the ratio of how much attention it gets over how useful it actually is to users.

As a browser, Ladybird usefulness is currently quite limited for obvious reasons. This is not meant to dismiss its achievements, nor to overlook the fact that building a truly useful browser for everyday users is something few open source teams can accomplish without the backing of a billion dollar company. Still, in its present state, its practical utility remains limited.

thrdbndndn··on Ladybird adopts Rust, with help from AI
I'd argue Ladybird itself is a "hype" project.

This URL just return empty content (while being http 200) for me.
thrdbndndn··on YouTube as Storage
I don't get how it works.

> Encoding: Files are chunked, encoded with fountain codes, and embedded into video frames

Wouldn't YouTube just compress/re-encode your video and ruin your data (assuming you want bit-by-bit accurate recovery)?

If you have some redundancy to counter this, wouldn't it be super inefficient?

(Admittedly, I've never heard of "fountain codes", which is probably crucial to understanding how it works.)

thrdbndndn··on Game Boy Advance Audio Interpolation
I'm not well-versed in the terms, so I'm not sure which part is the so-called "audio aliasing."

To me, the original has very obvious background noise which the enhanced version removes. But as the author has said, the enhanced version sounds "muffled" (and, IMHO, not just a little), which probably makes most people (including me) feel it sounds worse.

Also, shouldn't most of music be included in the game's official OST? I assume that version would not be limited by the game media's technical limitation at the time and should represent the artistically intended version best.

Edit: apparently in this very case, "Metroid: Zero Mission" doesn't seem to have any official OST release. Unfortunate.

thrdbndndn··on We can’t send mail farther than 500 miles (2002)
What I don't get is how the author can't pin the year down to anything narrower than "between 1994 and 1997," especially considering he wrote the article in 2002: only a few years later.

I'm not at all implying the story was fake; just this particular thing feels weird.

UX bug:

I don't use dark mode. Every time I open this site, it firstly shows in dark mode and then switches to light mode after 0.x seconds.

thrdbndndn··on Show HN: Reversing YouTube’s “Most Replayed” Graph
Not sure whether such "criticism" is welcome here, since it is ultimately subjective, but I will just be blunt and say: I disagree.

I like this style of writing as well, but I think this article overdoes it, to the point that it became somewhat irritating to read.

The part where I particularly feel this way is when the author spends two whole paragraphs discussing why YouTube (or its developers) chose to sample by "100" segments, to the extent that the author even asks, "If you work at YouTube and know the answer, please let me know. I am genuinely curious." Which, for lack of better words, I found ridiculous.

thrdbndndn··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
It's not, here is a good article about it: https://gist.github.com/valinet/d66733e5f1398856bb21bda466a2...

(And a workaround).

Unfortunately I cannot modify registry at work so I have to live with it.

thrdbndndn··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
Windows struggles even with native apps, as soon as you have monitors using different scaling settings.

I'm currently using a laptop (1920x1200, 125%) + external monitor (1920x1080, 100%) at work. The task manager has blurry text when putting in the external monitor. It is so bad.

I'm sure Markdown was already popular, but I agree with the OP that GitHub made it orders of magnitude more popular.

Previously its popularity was somewhat similar to RST.

Your link is wrong. It must be lower case .json.
thrdbndndn··on Mitsubishi Diatone D-160 (1985)
Is the article itself written by the manufacturer or a 3rd party? It keeps saying "we ..." but then also "[i]t seems that ...".

Edit: apparently the site is translated from its original Japanese version, which explains these weird wordings.

The original article is here, which has more pictures too: https://audio-heritage.jp/DIATONE/diatonesp/d-160.html

Wow, thanks. I vaguely remembered reading something about this years ago on Zhihu, and I didn't even realize it was the same article!

I would like to read the original Chinese version as a native speaker. Is there any chance you post that (the article itself) too?

thrdbndndn··on GitHub Actions has a package manager, and it might be the worst
Then I agree with this. But still feel their size is irrelevant.
thrdbndndn··on GitHub Actions has a package manager, and it might be the worst
I won't "defend" Microsoft in this case, but I am always annoyed by phrases like "world's biggest billion-dollar businesses... bablah".

Their size or past misbehaviors shouldn't be relevant to this discussion. Bringing those up feels a bit like an ad hominem. Whether criticism is valid should depend entirely on how GitHub Actions actually works and how it compares to similar services.

thrdbndndn··on Netflix’s AV1 Journey: From Android to TVs and Beyond
Good to know!
thrdbndndn··on Netflix’s AV1 Journey: From Android to TVs and Beyond
The whole HDR scene still feels like a mess.

I know how bad the support for HDR is on computers (particularly Windows and cheap monitors), so I avoid consuming HDR content on them.

But I just purchased a new iPhone 17 Pro, and I was very surprised at how these HDR videos on social media still look like shit on apps like Instagram.

And even worse, the HDR video I shoot with my iPhone looks like shit even when playing it back on the same phone! After a few trials I had to just turn it off in the Camera app.

thrdbndndn··on Netflix’s AV1 Journey: From Android to TVs and Beyond
I'm not too surprised. It's similar to the metric that "XX% of Internet is on IPv6" -- it's almost entirely driven by mobile devices, specifically phones. As soon as both mainstream Android and iPhones support it, the adoption of AV1 should be very 'easy'.

(And yes, even for something like Netflix lots of people consume it with phones.)

A lot of 3rd party software handle space, or special characters wrong on Windows. The most common failure mode is to unnecessarily escape characters that don't need to be escaped.

Chrome's Dev Tool (Network)'s "copy curl command (cmd)" did (does?) this.

There is bunch of VS Code bug is also related to this (e.g. https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/248435, still not fixed)

It's also funny because VS Code is a Microsoft product.

thrdbndndn··on Show HN: Glasses to detect smart-glasses that have cameras
Sorry I'm still confused. Do you have a reliable way to detect if a smart glass is recording or not? I never used smart-glasses regularly, but wouldn't it be "on" all the time if one is using it, so detecting the power-on and pairing is kinda useless?
thrdbndndn··on How Charles M Schulz created Charlie Brown and Snoopy (2024)
Snoopy or Peanuts in general is (was) very famous in my country (at least for my age) but I only read it in comic.

So no idea what the song is about, unfortunately. I don't even know it has animation version.

thrdbndndn··on A woman on a mission to photograph every species of hummingbird
Yeah, that's definitely a perk of living in the US / Americas. Hummingbirds were one of the most often mentioned birds in the pop-science books I read as a kid because of how unique and interesting they are, but since I grew up in Asia, they stayed "exotic" to me until I moved to the US and started seeing them regularly.
thrdbndndn··on The fall of Labubus and the mush of modern internet trends
