thrance··on Formalizing Fermat's Last Theorem
And (3) the axioms are correctly encoded too.
thrance··on Formalizing Fermat's Last Theorem
Meaningless on its own.

The answer to this question is, also, "X threw a fit". They sent Cease & Desists to nitter and xcancel.

Come on, you can't compare that with Wiles's proof.

There's a blocklist for ublockorigin, but I can't really recommend it. It's a bit over-zealous and sometimes blocks useful stuff.

thrance··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
Realistically, you can't replace the entire global fleet on any reasonable timescale. And when climate change starts being such a problem that even politicians can't ignore it anymore, I think we'll have much bigger fish to fry than building electric planes. Flying is a luxury, after all.

Now, I think this is very neat, but I doubt we'll ever set foot on an electric plane this century.

thrance··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
Still beating the same dead horse, huh? The Trump family's corruption is on a whole new level, pretending otherwise is extremely disingenuous and bad faith. But what else would you expect from MAGA?
thrance··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
Reread the second paragraph of my previous comment. It's a process, of which the US are further along. But eventually, the entire west will go that path.
thrance··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
Sarkozy got like 4 days in jail total, for taking money from an actual terrorist, and then helping them (among other heinous acts). And the entire media circus was behind him during this "ordeal", complaining about how unjust and unfair it was for this piece of shit to face any justice.

It's not quite as bad as in the US yet, but it's getting there. Media is consolidating in fewer and fewer hands, populists are getting bolder and more shameless, the left is demonized, etc. Same disease, same symptoms, same outcomes.

thrance··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
You can change the details of the numbers game that is played every 4 years, but that won't solve the structural issues. I live in France, in any given election we have between 10 and 15 candidates from as many parties. Yet, we're still ruled by corporate interests.

The media makes sure to qualify any candidate threatening the interests of capital as a "dangerous extremist", while "pro-business" candidates receive the lion share of donations for their campaigns. And there are many other guardrails in place to ensure nothing impedes the slow erosion of our infrastructure and public services under the strains of austerity in profit of the few.

thrance··on I Don't Think I Can Stay in Tech
That's capitalism: owning capital attracts more capital, until eventually an all-powerful oligarchical class emerges that is then emboldened to dismantle the liberal democracy that built them, in order to secure their position at the top.

Hitler was sponsored by the industrialists of its nation. So was Mussolini. So is Putin. So is Trump.

"Capitalism is incompatible with democracy" is the one lesson I hope people finally learn by the end of this century.

thrance··on I Don't Think I Can Stay in Tech
Conservatives don't actually believe in "small governments": that's just another posture they take, like "states rights" or "protect the kids". Deficit increases much faster under Republicans, and Trump is no exception. They're funnelling money to government contractors through a bloated military whose sole purpose is spending tax payer dollars on expensive and useless toys, that can't even win a war against a theocracy that's been under sanctions for half a century.

That's how billionaires became so much richer under Trump, while the rest of the country goes to shit. And that's a common symptom of fascism: a merging of the State's and corporate interests.

thrance··on I Don't Think I Can Stay in Tech
Ok, then let's strip your original comment of its hyperbole:

> Why does "some of the things I disagree with are fascists" seem to be a common trope among certain walks of life?

Seems pretty reasonable to me. Now, to make an actual argument: do you contest that a lot of leaders in tech are ideologically fascists or do you contest that this is an issue?

They'll immediately fall for the next such guy. Republican voters aren't actually reconsidering their views. Corporations and oligarchs have known no major blowbacks in decades and keep winning on every front, further eroding the Republic and its institutions little by little. And they won't stop until all that's left of America is an empty shell, a dead state like Russia, a sandbox for the Epstein class.
thrance··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
> I’m not sure: when I was in high school / university it was well understood that places like Florida would be under water and unlivable by now.

Nobody was claiming that Florida would be under water by 2026. You just made up an hyperbolic claim and attributed it to academics to discredit them.

thrance··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
I brought up Germany because it is the example that comes to mind. The greens never held any power anywhere. Anti-nuclear laws have all been passed by right-wing (or ""center"") parties, pushed by fossil fuel lobbies.

You're very misguided in trying to place the blame of the climate crisis entirely on the only ecologists in politics.

Until very recently, all major right-wing parties were insisting that climate change wasn't real and that we should "drill, baby, drill" or burn "clan coal". Do you think they share a part of the blame or is that on the Greens too?

And lastly, building nuclear plants is all well and good, but it is meaningless if it's only added capacity. Same with solar. We have to close coal and oil plants, or all of this is useless. You should start advocating for that instead.

thrance··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Do you seriously think "the greens" have more power than fossil fuel companies?
thrance··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Forget the farmers, they are concerning signs of large famines potentially coming in early 2027.
thrance··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
We're not Kardashev II. We're not even Kardashev I. And nuclear and solar are meaningless if we don't reduce fossil fuel use, which we currently aren't doing (quite the opposite, actually). And carbon removal is a red herring.
thrance··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
The Christian-Democrats signed the end of nuclear power in Germany, not the Greens. Please stop this mindless scapegoating. And electricity is only 30% of our global carbon emissions.

"Binary" applied to a relation just means it links pairs of elements, (left, right) for example. Functions are special cases of binary relations, in that each "left" element is linked to at most one "right" element. But the general case of a relation can have multiple right elements for a single left element. So TFA's correct.

The Entscheidungsproblem. Basically, is there an algorithm such that, taking an arbitrary statement as input, can output wether it is true or false? Turing and Church both independently proved that no such algorithm exists.

thrance··on US Government designates host of noblogs.org a "global terrorist"
> You can charge money to solve a problem without summoning the demon.

Then someone willing to "summon the demon" will outgrow you and you'll end up working for them.

You can't fix capitalism period. The issue was never a lack of "good guys" building "meaningful things". The economic pressures always push out the naive in favor of the ruthless. And wealth gets concentrated in fewer and fewer hands until a class of oligarchs emerges that is powerful and psychopathic enough to take over the government and dismantle democracy for personal gains.

Happened in Germany, happening in America right now.

* America wasn't "wild" when Europeans landed there, it was already inhabited. The previous owners were genocided and their land seized.

* I utterly reject the concept of "birthright". Birth alone does not entitle one to anything. You want prosperity? Work for it.

* Housing can be built, opportunities are created as the population grows. Immigration is economically beneficial to the country that harbors them.

thrance··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Your premise is flawed, so your argument is worthless.

* America was built by immigrants.

* None of the Americans currently alive "built this prosperous nation". They were born into it.

* Welcoming immigrants won't "kick Americans to the curb".

thrance··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
You're getting downvoted but this is literally true.

> According to The Atlantic, while helping Trump prepare for a debate in 2024, Miller got into an argument with an ally on immigration. Trump reportedly said, "Stephen... if you had it your way, everyone would look exactly like you", to which Miller replied "That’s correct". In another incident reported by The New York Times, Trump told a campaign meeting that Miller only wanted 100 million people who looked like him to live in the United States.

Sure, he should just have lived as a slave and not socialize with anyone until he left.

H1Bs have been used as a path to citizenship for a long time. You can't just change the rules like that without destroying so many lives in a senseless act of cruelty. But the cruelty is the point.
