thowawatp302··on Facebook ban on discussing Linux?
Humans made a policy that said the computer system could do this, so while GP might be inaccurate, you’re not right either.
thowawatp302··on Why do bees die when they sting you? (2021)
This whole line of argument from the parent comment and its ancestor seems to ignore we can see where certain evolutionary features reach local minima, like the retina of the human eye. It’s obviously not the fittest thing wrt the octopus retina, but does well enough you can read this.

But I wasn’t asking about any particular CEO, I was asking about your opinion—- it’s clear you don’t have a cogent answer.

I’m sure that’s a great answer to a question I did not ask.

My question: What is your reasoning on why a CEO, the Chief Executive Officer is just another cog in the wheel?

Yeah I listed all of those because it’s funnier when people mistake the vigilante justice’ thing for a ‘not killing people’ thing and then I can trot out Clint Eastwood and Dirty Harry, which was so popular it gets quoted regularly and had four sequels.

What does that have to do with what I’m asking? I want to know why a CEO is not another cog in the wheel.

Why not, I pay them. Do you pay your phone company to not provide service?

Non lethal vigilante justice is still vigilante justice

The goalposts were ‘ vigilante justice’ not killing people.

> UnitedHealthcare in particular denied coverage for post-acute care, or services and support needed after a hospitalization. In 2019, the insurance provider’s initial denial rate for post-acute care prior authorization requests was 8.7%; by 2022, it had increased to 22.7%.

Buck stop with him; between 2021 and 2022 he did that. Being the CEO and all.

Pretty sure the ‘Chef Executive Officer’ is the opposite of ‘just’ a cog in the wheel just because of, y’know his entire job title.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on why he isn’t!

I’m standing behind this.

I think that Brian Thompson was a mass murderer. His actions as CEO put profit before people and caused many people’s lives to be lost.

> But what he did was objectively what we consider to be bad… in our society, vigilante justice (especially against nonviolent offenders) is wrong

In our society we don’t objectively consider it wrong, otherwise Batman (Superman, Spider-Man) wouldn’t be so popular.

thowawatp302··on What happened to the world's largest tube TV? [video]
> But even if you keep it padded and safe, the coils of the deflection yoke are thin magnet wire operated at high voltage

The coils in the deflection yoke are run at 24-100V.

The acceleration voltage is the high voltage one.

> There are hundreds or thousands of windings, which have to duplicate exactly the configuration from the factory (and then probably be calibrated by processes that are lost to history).

Tubes are very not exact compared to solid state devices— to replace a deflection yoke, it has to be of similar deflection angle and inductance, all the rest of the adjustment has to be done anyway.

It’s hard but pales in comparison to the impossibility manufacturing a new CRT vacuum tube.

I think you’re forgetting how fast tech moved in the 1990s, it wasn’t until 1999 that broadband was available in the 8th largest city in the US.

(I remember wanting to dumpster dive the CO because we got a letter from Southwestern Bell saying they were upgrading the equipment to 5ESS in late fall 1998)

Why does one ever have to do a drowned rat study?

And before you ask, no not everyone has to eat meat, but, there is at least the reason that an all plant diet is intractable to some people for the sheer amount of carbohydrates, and for others due to the mental load of making sure they get the nutrients that are hard to get in plants but easy to get in meat.

thowawatp302··on Voyager 1 breaks its silence with NASA via radio transmitter not used since 1981
You don’t do it that way. You figure out the how it’s gong to fail, when that failure is likely, and then engineer it not to do that in the relevant timeframe.

The original engineer was right and you are not.

thowawatp302··on Honda is testing a manual transmission for EVs
> Automatic transmission often makes a wrong choice, so I often need to override the selection of gear.

That sounds suspect. In the past 20 years I’ve found it makes far less errors than when I drive manual transmission over the same time. The set points just differ.

The curve for engine breaking is also not absent, just different I regularly release the accelerator in an automatic transmission, and it will slow down to a stop

thowawatp302··on A Journey from Linux to FreeBSD
What won me over is how it treats an NFS share going away. Linux gets so weird you need to reboot but FreeBSD is usable to the point I can fix the issue.
